no chance. If Aquaman was Superman we would still finish more than 10 points off the pace.

What he said, and most on here.

In theory we could win the league from here, 24 points now up to say 87 would take 20 wins out of 23 and therein lies the problem. If we won five in a row, then drew one, won five in a row, then drew won, won five in a row, then drew one and then won five in a row we'd have another 63 points.

Why "won five in a row" ? Because we haven't won more than that in a row since 05/06. Even with 20 wins out of 23 we'd probably fall short like last season, Chelsea only need 17 wins to reach 87 points. Either which way we need 20+ wins to be reaching the same kind of points tally of last season.

But if you want some kind of false hope to cling to, the mancs won something like 21 of their last 25 last season - if only we had a diving portugese count in our team and a plethora of strikers

can we win the league this season?  mathematically - yes we can.

In reality - yes we can.

you watch this team start to hit form starting in the next league game. Get torres back, aquaman firing on all cylinders, a freshened up Gerrard, then add a couple new faces in January and pow! number 19 in the bag - walk on!

I don't know about "walk on", dream on or wake up might be more apt  :D

Last year when we was so close and i said if we can keep Torres fit for the season then we would have an amazing chance for next year sadly Torres has been hit with injury again and there is NOONE in the team who can fill his role. With united if Rooney was injure then they could bring berbatov in however we lack quality back up for the quality players.

Im hoping to see aqualani soon actually start as i still have no idea how good he is.

Next game Arsenal at home a must win. I dont know how close torres is but to beat arsenal we either need him or the team to pull there finger out

Mate, we have NO strength in depth whatsoever. Take one player out of the picture - admittedly a good player in Torres, a potential match winner any day of the week - wnd who in his absence is going to win us a game ? Ehhhhh....before you answer that, I'll tell you - NOBODY !
Take Gerrard out, and who's the driving force in the team (that is, whenever SG is ersed to apply himself) ? See previous answer....
Take a couple of dodgy performances from one, possibly two, players at the back and who's gonna step up to the plate ? Touch of Groundhog Day here, eh ?

My point is, any other team can cope with the absence of a player or two. It means the others will give it socks to make up for it; the lads who are normally on the bench are twice as eager to apply themselves; and in theory the team doesn't suffer *that* much. Not for us tho', no sirrrreeeeeeee....

We simply cannot sustain a decent run of performances long enough to build up a head of steam, and for that reason, we haven't a sniff of winning the league this year. In fact, I'd go so far as to say we won't win shyte this year AGAIN...

For some reason, I also hope that Aquaman is Rafa's secret weapon to surprise us and the EPL! (Good or bad..)

hey, I was only offering the theoretical route to the league and it should be pretty blatantly apparent from it that even an unlikely 20+ wins might not be enough.

To go from 9 points from the last 24, to 63 from 69 would be a miracle turnaround. We could get into the top four, but even that may be a struggle given current form.

OK.. general concensus we aint going to win the title..

Can we reach 4th..  These are the points achieved since 00/01 season to get the 4th spot

08/09 72
07/08 76
06/07 68
05/06 67
04/05 61
03/04 60
02/03 67
01/02 71
00/01 68

The average is 68 points for 4th place.  Which means we need another 44 points from the remaining 23 games (1.9 pts per game).  So we can drop another 25 points (lose 8 games?)

How positive are you about that?
Our job is simple, to support the club, not just parts of the club that are easy to support, but every one who plays a part, that includes ALL players.  We are stronger when we are all walking in the same direction. Walk On

If the form of Arsenal, Chelsea and Man Utd come of the rails seriously, then Liverpool have a chance. But, once again, Liverpool will have to rely on other teams screwing it up, rather than relying on their own merits. I think this year though, it's an especially tall order given the gaps involved and I just don't honestly think the team is good enough (even the starting 11). The tactics are very weak, the umph has been sucked out and there really doesn't seem to be any deference between Plan A and Plan B (other than Torres replacing striker X).

So, really, all the the flag-waving superfandom aside...the only honest answer to the question is no.

i will just add though that I had smoked something wacky previous to this vision , but once I'd fought my way through the pink elephants and managed to out-run the phsyco wheelbarrows I then had this vision. :;):

Wrong, irrelevant question imo. The question should be: Can we win the NEXT game?
