Where is the critiscim then ? are you going to slag him off for fielding a bunch of kids ?

They are only two points ahead of us in the prem ? are they still in the prem ? If so then we are as well - if not then they are in the same amount of competitions .

You are the main one who is always bigging up wenger and using him as stick to beat Rafa becuase he plays his lovely kids and plays lovely football - yet wins sweet feck all in the last 5 years doing it . So you going to slag him off for it ?

I'm fairly certain Wenger WILL be getting criticised for not fielding his A-team but then again he was still in all competitions before last night.

I don't know about you , but that looks like a lot of kids to me.

I understand what you are saying Bob, but I think if we started to see similar progression from our reserves , I wouldnt mind gambling on them in the minor cups in similar fashion.

As I said, he did field a fair number of youngsters last night but "Arsene's kids" has become a fairly pat cliche in recent years and I find it interesting how it gets deployed.  If they win, he's a genius for unearthing such gems and training to carry on the great tradition of flowing football he's instilled at Arsenal.  If they lose, they're just kids and couldn't be expected to go all the way.  Better luck next year lads *tossles hair*.  Much like the discussion of rotation under Rafa or zonal marking, the broad strokes of the discussion are more or less correct but the details are more varied than the story often lets on.

Mick's right though--we should aim to get higher than Arsenal and that applies just as much to the people that refer to the beautiful football his "kids" play as it does to those who gloat that they've won zilch in 5 years.

Someone might have told Tomas Rosicky they're still in the mix for the league, mate.  He seemed to say otherwise the other day.  :D

I would never have guessed that  :D

It is true that they haven't been winning much lately but they have been so starved of cash that it's been almost impossible.

Wenger doesn't give two sh1tes about the league cup which is why he doesn't field his A-team, he uses it to give his fringe players a run out and by and large they are fairly impressive. Man City the new uber club obviously does take the league cup seriously, Hughes is so desperate to win something to save his job.  :D

I think Wenger is twice the manager Rafa will ever be, and the future for Arsenal under Wenger is looking a hell of a lot rosier than it is for us under Rafa, Arsenal are much much closer to winning the prem than we are, I don't think they have a chance this year because Chelsea re just too damned strong but they are getting better and better and have a fantastic squad of "youngsters" coming through, whereas what do we have?

I think we have a much better team than Arsenal, and under normal circumstances I would expect us to finish well clear of them in the league.

Wenger has done well with no money, but even he can't work miracles. I think Heimdall does have a point, that their future looks rosier than ours but only if this restriction on our spending continues.

bigmick wrote:I must confess I always find it a bit odd when some of our fans give it the old "well what about arsenal, they've won feck all either" each season. It's odd for a couple of reasons.

Firstly and formostly, I couldn't really give a feck about Arsenal and I'm surprised they can either. I aspire to get infront of the teams which actually win trophies, namely Chelsea and Manchester United over the last few seasons (I'm not going to count Portsmouth under Redknapp as it was probably a one off). To be totally frank, if we finish fifth this season and just so happen to finish ahead of Arsenal (or anybody else for that matter) I couldn't give a feck and I wouldn't be celebrating, I'm surprised others would. I wouldn't quite go as far as the old first is everything second is nowhere carry on, but we really ought to be trying to challenge to win trophies if at all possible.

The other reason I'm surprised that people pick on Arsenal for a comparison is that even the staunchest pro-Rafa supporter in the World would surely accept that of all the teams around us, Arsenal have been the most miserly in the transfer market. Wenger has built the team on the best part of feck all, so quite why the same people who constantly bemoan us "shopping in the bargain basement" think we are a reasonable comparison to Arsenal is a mystery to me.

It comes back to that "real fan" thing I think. If you are a "real fan", you generally have fairly low aspirations it seems to me. If on the other hand you aren't a "real fan", then it's unlikely that you'll get the bunting out should the team get in front of Arsenal, which it didn't on this occasion obviously because they knocked us out.

Well, unlike me who are a "real fan" you belong to the "dessillusioned fan" who believe we had a great team 04 and just need a few tweaks and that Rafa has had shedloads of money to correct those minor tweaks or that the squad now as it is is strong enough to win the league with.

Either way you are seriously deluded  :D

Nah mate, I still believe in the team, I believe with the right man pulling the strings we could go one better than last season. We had a good team last season and we still have a good team, we just aren't getting the best out of them.

I think its the manager that costing us, you obviously think the team is not good enough.......which boils down to the manager anyway :D
