Garcia, Alonso, Arbeloa and now perhaps Mascherano all probably belong to this category. Sometimes you can't really blame them and if Mascherano's reported social circumstances are correct then I certainly don't hold it against him.
We're not the only ones affected. Arsenal lost Anelka, Overmars, Petit, Henry and Vieira while they were at their peaks. United lost Ronaldo and Chelsea lost Robben. I'm sure there are countless others.
What can you do about it? Well winning trophies would help keep these players around longer I feel, but isn't always possible. Building a team with a strong British core is another possibility, but again it's difficult and expensive to do. You might also have to accept players of less quality. Basically it's something we will just have to learn to accept in modern football unfortunately.

Nail on the head.
I just wish we had more finincial clout. I can't help but feel if we were bringing in more quality on par with Masch, Stevie and Torres then these players wouldn't be so quick to want to leave.
As happy as he makes the fans I can see Torres eventually wanting to leave too.

Buying potential and selling at a massive profit , Alonso ,mascherano , and probably torres next year . Then we buy players of lesser value just to keep us in or around the top four and sell again . That's what the yanks are after and that's what there getting . Get used to it , some of us have been banging on about this for a few years now . Maybe once Torres goes some will start to take some notice .
What was the quote from hicks , something like " it's not about winning things it's about brand loyalty " .
Mascherano wants to go, make no mistake and it's got feck all to do with Rafa . He's had his head turned by his agent and by Barca and he's fell for it hook line and sinker .
Does anyone think that rafa will see the majority of that money ? He'll get half if he's lucky and he'll have to juggle the squad on that basis once again .
If we sell mascherano to Barca for the reported fee ( i doubt it will be that much by the way ) £36 million . Do you know how much rafa's net spend will be from when the yanks took over , 3years in Jan '10 .
A big fat £0 , waddayathink now.

Wonder where he would go if god forbid, he were to leave.
Real Madrid is a deffo no no for him, plus i think i remember him saying if he were to go back to spain it would only be to atletico later on in his career.
What with Italys league not being as strong as it once was, it leaves the premier league as the last realistic option.
