I also  think Spearing was well out of his depth and coupled with Plessis , we totally lacked any bite in midfield ,as for Babel this kid has some serious issues he gives real meaning to the term vacant .

However on the plus side Alberto Aquilani on this appearance alone looks to banish any lingering memories we still have of Alonso ,Liverpool look like they have found a player who could well grace Anfield for years to come ,this display however fleeting will have Torres  licking his lips at the prospect of Aquilani as well as Gerrard delivering some incisive balls to his talented feet ... Oh and Insua's goal was superb and that about sums up our involvement in  the Carling Cup

great post mate, as always! i totally agree that skrtel has been given too much stick for last night, but for me he was given no support by the greek, nor the keeper. as a result his own game suffered, an i tell you - what a pass he made in the first place for babel to nod down to insua. that was the only decent touch of the ball babel made all night! iv'e said it before the main issue i have with babel is his attitude,he really p1ssed me off last night.

enough is enough with babel how many chances does he want to so call prove himself. his bleating about not given enough chances in the side p1ss me off even more!

say what you like, but again last night proved that we don't have strength in depth because of our financial situation -yes we know we are skint as a football club, so lets get the funding we need from someone who cares about the football club i love an then games like last night would be more of a realistic challange.

i thought the side did play well in some parts an wasn't as p1ssed off as much as a result as i would be normally after a defeat, but i was gutted for the likes of spearing cause like you say mate he was out of his depth last night, which is a great shame as i do rate the lad an hope he learns very fast from this.

plessis was non-exsistant for me which didn't help spearing, but thats where we lost the game last night , cause there was no creativity from midfield. the porn star tw@t is an embarrasment an a disgrace to the shirt.

good start from aqua man, he has shown a great attitude from the word go. good competition for places has just got a whole lot better. which is what wev'e been missing for a long time.

Let's be honest, who ever remembers the winners of this in the past couple of seasons? I barely remembered us getting to the final of it a few years ago and losing to a SG OG against Chelsea.

Without sounding "elitist" or descriminatory - but that post smacks of someone who just doesn't "get it"

The fans deserve a day out at Wembley, irrespective of the so-called "prestige" of the competition.

It's not a question of remebering who won a cup years ago.

One of my best days/nights was the 2001 Carling Cup final - me and my mates still talk about that legendary weekend today.

No, it's understandable. I know that we as a club always did treat every competition as serious as the rest, and if it was there to be won, we'd try. Understandable sentiment with the fan's getting the day to go to the big venue as well. But these days I just feel that we really just should concentrate on the bigger prizes more. Picking up a league cup is always a bonus, but it's hardly a championship, or a Big Ears, or even a FA Cup, is it? If going out of the competition potentially means that we hypothetically pick up an extra 3 points in the league, I'd take it.

I understand your point of view Emerald but at the moment I would rather have a cup than "a meaningless three points". Obviously if the three points meant we would win the league I would prefer that , but if it meant the difference between coming second, or third with a cup, I would take 3rd and a cup. And yes I would gamble on losing the three points for the sake of a cup this year.

Besides which I think a trophy would take some of the pressure off Rafa AND the team. I am sure some of the players would like a big day out (as well as the fans). Torres is in his third season with us and hasn't had a glimpse of a medal yet!

Liverpool needs to win something this season and if we can't win "one of the big ones" a little one would have been nice.

Yeah, true. In hindsight with a little more thought, I suppose actually winning something would have a positive knock-on effect on the overall mentality of the squad. A lot of our lads have yet to lift something with us. It would have given them a taste for success.

I think considering the circumstances we are in, the performance last night was more important than the actual result IMO. That side put out performed better than we have in the last few of our games in the league and CL prior to the game on Sunday. I'm more interested in the steadying of the ship rather than the exit from this cup.

Anyway, let's all hope we do a job at Lyon to keep us in that other cup.
