Dispelling a popular myth - About our own number nine

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

I know it is inevitable that rival fans will knock a striker for not scoring against the big boys, even more inevitable they'll do it without checking their facts and end up talking rubbish.

I've seen several comments around that he "goes missing" in big games and can only score against the weaker teams. Well our near if not already legendary striker has just stuck another one past the supposed best team in the history of history, so now let's expose said myth

FERNANDO TORRES (LIVERPOOL)

vs Chelsea : 5 goals in 7 apps (0.714 goals/app)
vs Man Utd : 2 goals in 4 apps (0.500 goals/app)
vs Arsenal : 3 goals in 5 apps (0.600 goals/app)
vs Tottenham : 3 goals in 5 apps (0.600 goals/app)
vs bitters : 3 goals in 5 apps (0.600 goals/app)

vs Inter Milan : 1 goal in 2 apps (0.500 goals/app)
vs Real Madrid : 1 goal in 2 apps (0.500 goals/app)
vs FC Porto : 2 goals in 2 apps (1.000 goals/app)

The only really "big" club I could find that he has a poor record against is villa, just 1 goal in 5 apps and 79 mins per appearance so it isn't like he was sub or taken off etc. But against the 'big four', the usual teams implied when such claims are put forward, he's scored 10 goals in 16 appearances at 0.625 goals per appearance which is better than his overall strike rate albeit only by a fraction (overall 0.621) I haven't deliberately dodged any, just feel listing say Citeh might be a bit generous (3 goals in 4 apps) and where do you draw the line?

:rasp to the fools that suggest Torres is some kind of 'flat track bully' who only scores against the weak sides (also a :rasp to a suggestion I vaguely recall seeing on here that I only post negative stats, the stats match what is to be shown and are only as negative as what they show ie I don't determine them, they are determined by whoever or whatever they are about)

He is a world class player who performs against all teams big or small, Everton or R.Madrid.

It's been a while since we have a player that I feel can score anytime when he is on the pitch. Sometimes,  you don't see him do much and then the next thing you know, he scores a goal. He is really by far a very complete forward because his header is also top class. Other than using his speed, you see him out head many opposing CB. He is simply an amazing player. When he is on the pitch, it really gives more space to other players and thus we performed better and see more movement.

Your stats are spot on, but in fairness I have not heard any of the above comments from rival fans. Yet...

people need to remember that these goals have all come from open play aswell. righ foot, left foot, inside the box, outside the box, headers. you name it he's done it. and to think that he wasn't even fully fit the other day is frightening. once again he made the united centre backs look like pub players.

another myth which needs to be dispelled is this two man team nonsense. we've never lost a premiership game when torres has played but gerrard hasn't for example.

Didnt we loose to Man Utd the first season torres was with us ? Either rooney or O Sh.it scored for them . It was the only game where Jar Jar and VD contained him .

The stats are frightening. He's now scored 47 goals in 66 League games. He needs 3 goals in his next 2 league games to get to 50 in the same number of games as Ruud van Nistelrooy (who had 12 penalties in that total).

Puts things into perspective. :oh:

That is a brilliant goal record , makes the 20 million we paid look like next to nothing. Here's hoping he can surpass RVN again , he's already done it once , with the most amount of goals scored in a debut season by a foreign striker. Hat trick against fulham will do nicely :D

Must say that I ahevn't heard that one either. We are a bit of a 2-man team though in the fact that so far this season Carra and bennayoun have gone missing in many games. Hopefully the lads can all start to gel now and with Aquaman just around the corner things are starting to look a bit rosier but we still have one hell of a task if we are to go further in the CL.

Torres has a great record against the small and big teams. Not sure where this is coming from...

Maybe statto just wanted to get those goals against top 4 teams stats into a thread somehow.

a certain idiot on a national radio station (who has a histroy of being a controversial tw@t just for the sake of ratings) was actually arguing that defoe was just as good as torres the other day. he claimed that it's only because he's english that he's not rated as highly as torres. you couldn't make it up.
