Luis garcia - Your opinion of him so far?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

I watched the Monaco game last night and couldn't help being very inpressed with Garcia. He made a lot of intelligent running, has good ball skills and has been providing a good link between the midfield and striker as a "deep laying striker" playing in the hole behind Cisse or Baros and in front of the midfield.

He showed great understanding with Gerrard in the exchanges which led to the first goal, and also in his headed attempt towards the second half, connecting with a long through ball from Gerrard. The only belmish was he missed about 2 good chances.

Seeing him play so effective like the last 2 games and the way the Kop has taken to him, I wonder why Barcelona did not give him as first team place - he would be very good with Eto'o but as they say, their loss is our gain!

To my mind, he is the most skillful player of his type since Kenny Dalglish. Already he has been putting up performances to suggest that he is the buy of the season. Or am I singing his praises too soon?

What do you guys think?

It's his pace, azri. His attitude in trying any possible effort to bring the ball into the net is something that we have not had for such a long time. It's his die-hard. It's his winning attitude. I dare to say his one of the strikers we ever had with such great rate of ball possesion. Probably his position (second striker) allow him to perform in such way, but this is not the first time in Liverpool, yet we haven't seen any player like him in terms of work-rate.

It is not just his pace, Shanti. Garcia has a good first touch and skill, as he showed by taking the pass off a Liverpool team mate(I can't remember) in the Monaco penalty area with a defender close behind him and turned to shoot but if I am not mistaken, it was wide. I don't think Baros or Owen could do this.

His work rate is also good for a skillful player, the only thing is his finishing is not at a level of Owen or Van Horseface. He does a good link-up between Cisse and the midfielders and will not shy from trying if he smells half a chance. Need to improve on the finishing, as I said earlier.

Every striker in the world, except one or two alikes of Henry, needs enhancement in their predatory instinct. So, Garcia has so far done very well.

Garcia was a regular in first team at barcelona last year, in fact he was part of the great barcelona resurgence in second part of the La liga. However this year with the arrival of Giuly he lost his position in the first team. Barcelona were not willing to let garcia go it was only because Liverpool payed out his buy out clause and offered him a really good contract that you see him in Liverpool colors. He was our top scorer in the pre season this year, so finishing is not a big issue for me. The more he gets adjusted to the pace of the game in premiership the more he will score.

I am not sure wether his move has harmed Barcelona or not since Giuly has already scored 3 goals in last 3 matches but he surely is a great addition to Liverpool squad. Given that he plays in most of the matches he will finish somewhere around 15 goals in the premiership alone. Hell before coming to Barca he had scored 16 in a season for Athletico madrid

Barcelona have many good players but you wont get them. Garcia is more than what you would need.

I do not follow all spanish teams closely so I do not have good information about Alonso but what I do know is that  Alonso became famous after the 2002-2003 season in la liga that was the year they (Real Sociedad) came 2nd behind Real Madrid. Although loosing the title on the last day was partly their own fault. So the nucleus of the team was formed by Nihat, Kovacevic and Alonsa . The first two being forwards and Alonso playing in the midfield. He was pretty much their driving force through the midfield and he has excellent ball control. I think it was after that season that he became a regular in spanish team.

The problem However with him is that he is not typically a deffensive midfielder rather a holding type more likely to direct the flow of the game and that was one reason why Reals move for him used to blow Hot and Cold over a period of two years. but he is a great player there is no doubt about it.
