Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

bigmick wrote:It's an excellent post nan and a really good read. Funnily enough there are huge swathes of it which I agree with. I very much rail against this notion that because a bloke has played football at the highest level it necessarily follows as an absolute certainty that he knows more about the nuances of football than me. Some do obviously, but not all. Similarly, I don't accept for a second that because Rafa is the manager of Liverpool football club and I sell dildo's for a living, it naturally follows that if we disagree on something he is always right. It is an absolutely ridiculous notion, and I've never bought into it. When I said Fernando Morientes woulod never ever cut it in English football 18 months before we sold him, I was right. When i said we rotated too much, I was right. When I said we ought to buy Robert Earnshaw, or that Yossi Benayoun was nowhere near good enough, I was wrong.

Nobody ever is right about everything, and football is no different. The managers job is to be right about most things and get them right quickly. Be right about most signings, be right about most selections, and when he's wrong realise it quickly.

So the bits of the post I disagree with? Well it's the insinuation that people who have a problem with the manager listen slavishly to oiks like Paul Merson and Stan Collymore. I've met Paul Merson and he's a nice lad but an idiot. He was a very talented footballer but so was Paul Gascoigne, it hardly qualifies him to form my opinion on football. No I don't agree with that part at all. Not only do I not listen to Paul Merson and Stan Collymore, I couldn't even if I wanted to. My criticism's are entirely my own work, and I say it because I believe it not because some numpty has fed me a line.

The other bit I disagree with is the idea that 6 points behind Chelsea and 4 behind Man Utd isn't a crisis. It is if you want to win the league. We might be still in it, but only just, by the skin of our fingernails. It's only not a crisis if you don't want to win the league. Concede any more points to those two and we start concentrating on the cups.

I agree
I dont need dumb and dumber to "inform" me with their expert analysis. Two more ridiculously stupid and badly behaved ex players you are unlikely to find.
I also make my own mind up based on what I see, hear and know. I have also made predictions which have come true (I said for a season at least that Riise was not a left back and was a disaster waiting to happen) as well as ones which didnt ( I said Kewell was an absolute steal at £5 mil and he would be one of our greatest ever players).
I think its probably an absolute waste of time going on any forums and expressing opinions thinking that it will have any effect on what happens at the club (are you reading this Rafa?) But that is what we do and that is what they are for. It also lets us know that there are others who feel the same as well as those who have got a Fu*king igloo what theyre on about. I doubt if any forum is looked at by the club to see what the fans are really thinking or gauge their mood. Basically its for saddos who cant be ar'sed talking but want to get their point across without the hassle of listening to people.

the manure fan above me...as much as i hate to admit it, he might be right.

1) i remember the match against spurs and i was cringing at our subs bench when compared to theirs. its not just about depth but also about the quality of the depth. players like sinama pongolle and warnock were sold and in came expensive "no better then what we sold" players in babel and doss.

2) we're too one-dimensional, predictable, and very dependent on torres and gerrard. carragher has been a pale shadow of himself this season. then we have a certain degen who is just pure trash by all accounts. i hate his grin each time i see him in a photo during training or whatever.

3) mash and lucas are unable to create or dictate play the way alonso was. our central midfield has no such player yet rafa refuses to play gerrard in midfield when it is obvious its the best option. a good line up would be something like this:

---------------reina
johnson--carra--agger--insua
benayoun--gerrard--mash--riera
--------torres---kuyt

4) i dont see why i have to touch anything more that has already been said regards to the owners

5) academy. there is way too many players from abroad who dont seem to be heard of after awhile - antwi, roque and so on. get rid of the deadwood please.

it would take a miracle for us to win the epl. but like i said before, if we dont, i hope its anyone but manure. their ego is swollen enough.

Without (much :D )  reason.

I get all the '6 point rule' stuff but it just doesn't feel like a crisis to me. Something tells me that the Manc's and Chelsea ought to have a couple of points less than they do, and that this will redress itself at some point during the season - perhaps when we least expect it. We know how 'penalty kick' games - or 'bankers' - or the games you expect to at least draw - can actually turn out to be quite tough or very tough, and can result in defeats or draws; Burnley, Sunderland for the Manc's; Spurs, Villa for us; Wigan for Chelsea.  By my reckoning Chelsea's list should also have Hull and Stoke in it, while the Manc's never deserved to get the three against either Arsenal or City. Our list may include the Bolton game, but overall the other two have undoubtedly had better fortune.  I'm certainly not arguing we should be on level terms, just not quite as far behind. I had a similar feeling last season, just before the late twist.

Added to that is my belief that no. 19 will be defined by a remarkable twist of fate  :pirate

I still think we are in for a chance of winning. The top four is different this season because we are all dropping points to lower teams and in my opinion it is now a top 5..

Chelsea look the strongest and imo would win it but the African Nations will cost them.

Saturday's game is huge, mainly because you can't see United losing at home to Bolton or Arsenal losing at home to Birmingham. Chelsea have a really tough game away at Villa and could easily drop points as could Man City at Wigan.

For what it's worth I'd fancy us to beat United at home the week after anyway, especially considering that Rooney doesn't look like he'll be playing as his missus is due to give birth that weekend.

Gerrard's early training exit
England midfielder doubtful for Belarus clash

Midfielder Steven Gerrard left England's training session early on Tuesday ahead of the final World Cup qualifier against Belarus.

The Liverpool skipper began training with the rest of the squad, but he was then seen leaving along with head physio Gary Lewin.

Gerrard was forced off at half-time during Saturday's 1-0 loss away to Ukraine with a groin problem.

Pictures of the midfielder exiting the session with Lewin before it ended have raised concerns he could now be forced out of the Group 6 clash with Belarus at Wembley on Wednesday.

Fabio Capello's men have already qualified for next summer's World Cup finals in South Africa, with the midweek encounter their final competitive fixture before the tournament.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez will be hoping that Gerrard is not risked by Capello ahead of Saturday's Premier League meeting with Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Along with Gerrard, Fernando Torres, Dan Agger and Dirk Kuyt all picked up knocks while on international over the last week.

FFS He didn't even have to play the Ukraine game. I wish some of these managers would exercise some comomon sense sometimes.

There will be pressure from UEFA and TV to play stronger sides, what with the Ukraine result affecting Croatia. I think the FA have an agreement with a certain TV channel to field strong sides for the sake of audience figures, if they didn't field any name players then it would be an International Carling Cup equivalent ie second or third string

Wouldn't surprise me, these days a player struggling to shake off injuries isn't uncommon. I think we might have been best selling him at a profit when he was fit, or when he becomes fit again. No point having potentially the best CB in England (on paper) if he's never the best CB in England (on pitch) - or even on the pitch, best CB or not

I can understand big name players maybe playing to keep their sponsors happy but this is just silly. Are you saying LFC are obliged to release Stevie to play in an international when England have already qualified? Riles me to no end.

Or maybe he really is injured

6 points is not unsurmountable but the way we are playing against good opposition is, i.e very fecking badly.

If Rafa continues with this nonsence of playing Stevie as AM and Mash and Lucas at CM then we'll be fighting it out for 4th spot.

How depressing today has been. Our squad is so thin. It will be a miracle if finish above 4th this season.
