Centre halves..... - Do we have a serious problem?

Martin Skrtel should not be allowed to wear our red shirt again. The mistakes he commits are shocking and amateurish.

Last season against Man c or Wigan, he let a ball bounced over him towards a opposition attacker, realizing his mistake, he stretched fully, missed the ball, landed awkwardly and was injured for 3-4 mths. Last night, Carra was poised to clear the ball away to safety but Skrtel decided to head it to Giovanni for Hull's only goal.

a bit of a ridiculous comment.

But the point behind it is valid - he is an above average CB but he's not been at his best for a while (since recovery from that injury?), and if we had a better alternative, I would drop him for the time being

There must be a problem when both centre halves are going for the same ball as often as our's are, leaving the left side exposed.

just hope that the defence have their heads screwed on for the full 90 minutes tonight. if they do i can see us winning. we've scored in 21 successive champions league matches and have looked really good going forward in recent weeks.

The irony is we have our CBs going for the same ball in open play, noone goes for it from set-pieces................

Yea right , clearly on a windup. Firstly , his header was poor , secondly there was no communication between him and carragher and that is clearly jamie's job. If he had stayed on his postion as the LCB , jamie would have blocked geovanni's shot , the fact is both of them got drawn to the ball and nobody was near geovanni at all. Skrtel is young , bound to make mistakes but he's looking increasingly , nervy whenever playing next to carra , he's got talent and last season he hardly put a wrong foot in , now we can barely buy a cleansheet , IMO when we start stringing a couple of clean sheets together both their confidence will increase and they will bounce back to their best.

Skrtel is a liability at the moment. Everyone having a go at Carra should have a look at his partner imo. The number of daft free kicks he continues to give away in dangerous areas is shocking and he doesn't seem to be learning from it either.

Good point
Theyre having a nightmare at the moment with both of them looking fragile and no understanding whatsoever

I was on Skrtel watch last night. As soon as Agger's fit the better mate

just on a sidenote, would anyone like to see us play three at the back every now and again? Personally I think it would suit us more, especially with the way Johnson and Insua play.

Glen has thrown our balance at the back a little also Carra is not getting any younger. I think try out Agger and Skrtel against a few less than superb sides. Also the sooner Mascha comes back the better. But we do need cover or a world class centre back in January.

No to playing 3 centre backs, the 442 was formed to counter 3-5-2 or 5-3-2.
If the opposition played 2 CF, we have 2 CB marking him, leaving 1 of our CB redundant. Worst still if they played 1 CF, we will have 2 CB being redundant.
Been noticing now the trend of playing 433, Cheals did it for some seasons, then Mancs, Barca, and recently RM scums.

The benefits of 433 vs 442; 2 wingers attacking our flanks preventing our full backs from overlapping upfield. Their full backs will take out our wingers,
Torres and Gerrard (as a AM/CF) being marked by their 2 CB, They outplayed us in the middle, 3 is to 2. Their 1 CF being man-marked by our 1 CB, leaving another 1 CB free and not contributing much towards the bigger picture.
And lets bring it up another level, given Skrtel being the "free CB",
what can he do?
lets see: 1) go for the same ball with Carra and head the ball towards the opposition within the 12 yards box (2) commit dangerous fouls (3) lose possession in midfield (4) hitting mistimed shots and headers

Carra & Skrtel have been swapped around, maybe because Glo-jo keeps bombing down the wing and Skrtel is quicker than Carra, Rafa needs to change this to the way it was IMO its the reason we have conceeded so many silly goals this season.

At one point on tuesday night Skrtel just gave up, didnt track back to tackle the player, and pretended to be injured not good. He used to be hard as nails he is acting like a big fairy lately, his confidence has deserted him.
There is no-one anywhere in the world at any stage who is any bigger or any better than this football club.

Well I definitely think the positioning of Johnson when going forward leaves the centre half pairing in limbo and in a state of panick. As has been mentioned on a number of occassions we have conceded this season Johnson or Insua have failed to track back their man. As a result Carra or Skrtel have had to come across and get done for pace or other reasons.
