quality first post there mick3.

Houllier did a good job At LFC for the first 3-4 years, and I was disappointed he couldn't continue that in his last 2 seasons, the time was right to get rid of him, but I will never forget what he did for the club, as being a younger fan he brought me the happiest moments i have had supporting Liverpool.

I hope he is successful in hsi future, but he is in the past now, roll on the RAFA revolution.

everyone in their right mind should respect houllier for what he did for liverpool football club. 2001 was one of the best years of my life as a fan. i mean 3 trophies, doubles over the scum and the blue sh#te, beating arsenal 4-0. it was unbelievable. unfortunately, after his heart surgery he was never the same man which was understandable. he left gracefully and that was all that mattered at the time.

Houllier should be remembered as a manager who tried his best for Liverpool, despite being a defensive minded manager, and won us the FA Cup, the UEFA Cup, 2 league cups and the 2 less highly regarded cups, the Charity Shield and the UEFA Cup. I thanked him for his contriutions and endeavours for the club (I posted in several threads here).

I am not a young fan like LFC#1, neither am I an old one. I grew up in the late 70s and 80s, and has witnessed the Bob Paisley era, the Joe Fagan era, the Kenny Dalglish era, the Graeme Souness era, the Ronnie Moran era and the Gerrard Houllier era. While LFC#1 said that season 2000-01 is his best memory as a fan, my best memory was watching Liverpool play possession and pressing football and conquered England and Europe with our simple passing and possession game. This is not bashing at Houllier, but his Liverpool played such awful dire and uncreative football that it was not really enjoyable to watch. But watch I did because I am a fan, and as a fan I will always tune in to watch any games I can.

Stu, are you going to slag me for saying this? I think it is a fair comment/observation from a life long fan.

Coming back to the topic at hand, so far it seems that Riise has benefitted the most.

Houllier did a good job especially if you consider the clubs position when he took over. After his heart condition he obviously lost some of the strength that had made him look as if he truly could be our saviour. I think in the end the main problem last season was that he knew he was behind schedule on his 'five year plan' and tried to quickstart it by playing attacking football. He hadn't played that before (thats not a critiscm its a fact) and the team struggled to adapt to a different set of tactics. Ultimately he was a victim of trying too hard to change things quickly. He will be remembered well but I can't help feeling he was wasted in a way, by that I mean he could've achieved so much more.

On the proper topic I think Kewell will show the most improvement because he was well, well, well below his best last season.

Oh and Stu, your early comment about 'typical out-of-town fan' is highly offensive. Are you suggesting that if you don't live in Liverpool then you can't be a fan? Because thats just a load of fvcking ******

Gerard Houllier was the right manager for Liverpool when he joined us,he brought stability back to the club,he brought respect back to the club,he rid the club of all the deadwood that had infested it from top to bottom and most of all he won trophies.
Houllier took us to the first level but found it hard to take us futher because of the tactics he used but i would not have a go at him because of this because he like everyone else in life we all have a limit as to what we can achieve,yes Houllier was a good manager for Liverpool but we Liverpool fans must now hope that Rafa can be an even greater manager for Liverpool and take us up to another level.

This thread was about which player would improve most under Rafa and not a thread for brow beating a good man and a good manager like Gerard Houllier.

At LONG LAST !!!!!! Some decent posts regarding Gerard Houllier's reign instead of the patronising dismissive drivel we have had to put up with on here since he left. GH can hold his head up high when considering his record as LFC manager.

What irritates me sometimes in here is defending Houllier is often seen as wishing he was still here when anyone with an ounce of sense could see his time had come and it was time for a change.

I sincerely hope GH every success in the future and thank him for his service as a servant of Liverpool football Club.....

So back to teh thread , which player ? My answer would be ANY player can benefit in the new era. Benitez is no respector of persons and playing ability and form alone should always be the criteria by which players get picked.

Here here, leave GH alone, he nearly got us back to the big time and game us plenty of good times along the way.

The Alaves game will always stay with me as will the 'Owen cup final'
Houllier was found wanting at the very highest level, going head to head with Fergie & Wenger surely no harded job in football

His signings also let him down too often, but he also gave us Hyypia, Hamann , Henchoz , Riise, Kewell, and what a player Marcus Babbel was before his unfortunate illness. People should look back on some of the sh*te Fergie signed in his early years there

God there are some Morons about...Houllier did nothing that will last in memory? I mean what the f*ck do you call 5 trophies in a season? I have to echo Dalglishes comments, He did a superb job, won trophies, improved the squad and has left an awesome base from which to build. The club's facilities and infrastructure are second to none now. So thanks Gerard you will always be thought of in fondness by this Liverpool fan!!
As for the topic..well I disagree that Finnan will benefir from Rafa coming here...Josemi has stolen his place and I think he is more than likely to lose his midfield spot very soon, chances are he'll be dropped to let Alonso come in against Monaco. The players I think will benefit most are Kewell (I just wanna see this man play to his best ability sooooooo bad!!) I think Stephen Gerrard aswell, I mean he is already awesome but he's already scored 4 goals this season so he is benefiting from Rafa's tactics more than most.
