Damned United

The guy from Star Trek is Don Revie and the film is about Brian Clough, who coincidentally was mentioned by Big Mick in another thread.

I just wanted to know what you think about the film.  I know we have a movie thread, but I wanted to get opinions about how faithfully the football of those years have been represented in the film. From an outsider, it seems little realistic, I do know that older players did smoke and didn't take care of their bodies that much, but was it that familiar?

Was Leeds as nasty as portraited in the film or more? Was Brian Clough like an english Mourinho? Is the film any good in your opinion? How do you remember those days if you're old enough? How do you remember this Clough guy?

I like films about football, even if it's a poor attempt. At least it's not about violence, like football factory. And seeing the Star Trek Irish man as manager was funny :D

Haven't seen it yet but might download it I think it's out on DVD soon. They should make a film about Bob Paisley.

I don't know mate, if the film is not worth men like Paisley or Shankly perhaps it's better that it's not done.

I don't like the character that the film portraits in the case of Clough, they paint a man that loves more himself than football.

Then of course you realise that making a football film is not easy. You can't achieve in a short shot of camera the atmosphere of the Kop with 500 extra actors. For when you don't plug real images of the football back then you need actors who actually touch the ball like a footballer (which is not the case). It's damned difficult to do a worthy film about Paisley or Liverpool.

No reason it couldn't be done though if the right people were involved.

What Clough did was phenomenal - he got Forest promoted into the top division then
they were Champions in their first season.
They then won the European Cup 2 seasons in a row.

He's the only manager to win the 1st Division twice with teams he started managing in the 2nd Division.

I haven't seen the film Sabre, but Ive heard that the actors portrayal of Clough is very good.
I think it's based around his mad 44 days at Leeds United, although the book that it's based on
is supposed to be full of inaccuracies (i.e. what some of the players said/did).

He had a very big ego, and yea, I think you could liken him to Mourinho.
He said himself, that he could see a lot of himself in Mourinho.
In fact, if they had the internet then you would have had people on here saying he was
an erse and shouldn't be the next Liverpool manager.

Matt McQueen - Liverpool 1892-1928.
Only professional to - play in goal (41 appearances), Defence, Midfield, Striker, and later be Director and then to be Manager (winning a Championship) - at one club

just watched the film and thought it was pretty good. sheen does a great job of portraying clough as i remember him, in fact the casting all round is excellent - even though timothy spall looks búgger all like peter taylor.

i was only 7 when clough managed leeds so i don't really remember much, but its certainly true that leeds were a notoriously dirty team. and its also certainly true that there has never been, and will probably never be a manager quite like clough again. mourinho doesn't even come close.
