Arsenal are an unpredictable lot, the biggest threat to the manc dominance for most of the Premiership but only translating that threat into a league title here and there, but never two in a row. They were capable of going unbeaten, but then Arsene sold off their star players and rebuilt from scratch as seems to be his wont. So you just never know, if their talented kids 'come of age' then they have Arshavin, Rosicky, Sagna, Nasri, Fabregas and a decent supporting cast - even the seemingly useless Bendtner scores more goals than you'd think he would..
Chelsea are usually there or thereabouts, perhaps their problem is consistency of manager.
CHELSEA
03/04 2nd 79 Pts - 11 behind unbeaten Arsenal, scored only six less goals
04/05 1st 95 Pts - record breaking points season, 12 points ahead of Arsenal
05/06 1st 91 Pts - another good season, just eight points ahead of Man Utd
06/07 2nd 83 Pts - six points behind the Champions
07/08 2nd 85 Pts - just two points behind the Champions
08/09 3rd 83 Pts - just three points behind us as seemed to be the case most of the season, seven points behind the Champions
So the only season they've finished seven or more points behind the Champions was when Arsenal went unbeaten, not that it helped Ranieri keep his job with what most would consider a good season and starting point for a title challenge. So even though we finished 2nd last season, it is Man Utd's title to defend with them on for an UNPRECEDENTED four in a row. Chelsea surely are 2nd favourites with no major outgoing players and with such strong previous form. We've yet to string two strong seasons together under Rafa
04/05 5th 58 Pts - our 2nd lowest Premiership tally, 37 points behind the Champions
05/06 3rd 82 Pts - our highest points in the Premiership, nine points behind the Champions
06/07 3rd 68 Pts - 3rd only on GD, 21 points behind the Champions
07/08 4th 76 Pts - closing to 11 points behind the Champions
08/09 2nd 86 Pts - our highest Premiership points tally, but four points behind the Champions
Chelsea never further adrift than seven points, we've only twice been within 10 points. Maybe Johnson and Aquilani will prove key signings, but I doubt I'm the only one on here thinking that Arbeloa was decent enough and Alonso was a key part of our season and fear that his loss could be detrimental to our title challenges. Man Utd have suffered the biggest blow of the 'big four', losing their best player and not landing a really BIG name to replace him. Owen may score goals, Valencia may chip in, but the mancs lost have lost their engine and replaced it with a number of smaller, less powerful ones and they're not even sure if one of those replacing engines will work all the time.
