This season - Some postives maybe

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby taff » Mon Aug 10, 2009 2:36 pm

With the new season upon us I thought I would post some positives regarding our pursuit of number 19.

1.  The squad seems restless in a way that indicates they thought they should have won last season.  I want some disharmony and hunger in the squad and want the likes of Benny and Kuyt to have a good year to prove their worth and to tell SG and torres that this aint a two man team.

2.  The last time a major player went to RM we won something big.  I will always have a place in my heart for Alonso but I also want him looking on as we win a major trophy.

3.  After analysing last season and especially the last stage of the seaosn I can confidently say that the squad now believes in themselves and look like they know exactly what is needed from them to win a league title.  They already know how to win in Europe and that needs to be transferred to those boring games against the survivors of the PL.

4.  While Arbeloa was underrated IMO GJ gives us that attacking edge that was missing

5.  Crazy loony Rafa loses a world class midfielder at his valuation then within 24 hours buys another one.  Whatever his faults he just gets on with the job and keeps on moving forward

6.  Man Utd are writing us off now  If we are no threat then dont go on about us.

7.  We have already gone from being in 4th place to serious contenders for the league.  It might not seem like a lot of progress but that last hurdle was huge, we are now a title winning team that is being taken seriously by all pundits in season reviews

It just feels right.  I get the impression that Rafa has built from the back and is finally turning his hand to winning games with offensive tactics.  The beatings handed out last season to various teams seem like they were overdue and the team is moving towards a totally cohesive winning team.  A team that knows how to doggedly defend then relentlessly attack.  All in all we are on the verge of achieving trophies, the team is better, tactically and skill wise and we now have the belief and hunger

I know what you mean Taff.

It would just be our style to go and win it just when Man U get on level Championships at 18 all.

It would be the perfect reply to all the pro-Manc journalism we've had over the years.

Johnson may be the best right-back we've had in years; the lad knows what to do in the final third of the pitch.
It may give us that edge for the tricky home games; Kuyt can keep the left back busy with Johnson overlapping.

Last season was great for the players belief - winning at Chelsea and Man U reinforced that too.

I think that Rafa has instilled that cold edge we needed.  I know the players earn loads etc but they also do at other clubs as well.  We do not have a divine right to win the league, indeed we have to work hard to earn the right.  This IMO is the deciding factor,  relentless pursuit of perfection and the hard nosed hunger needed.

I can honstly say that while I am aghast at rumours regarding Alonso and his relationship with Rafa, and the Keane incident etc etc.  It comes down to a simple fact.  What medals have we picked up in the last few years.  This is the same Rafa that gave us the CL and FA cup with his cold approach and the man that has taken us to our best position in twenty odd years.  Now is the time for the squad to deliver

If your lost in a fog stick together :)

I am happy with the signings of Johnson and Aquilani but to me that only looks like our first team is stronger. If we get injuries we are still stuck with the same underperformers and kids that don't look up to it. I don't think Rafa will bring in any high profile players between now and the end of the transfer window so I am really hoping the likes of Lucas, Babel and NGog up their game.

Agreed... we really do need a decent back-up striker... Aquilani won't be fit in the beginning of the season so actually our first team has weakened. A new player like Glenn Johnson would need some time to settle in. So I'm abit worried honestly. I just don't understand why Rafa don't seem to be interesed in signing strikers... IMO we need 4 decent strikers... after Torres, we have Voronin, Ngog, Babel and Kuyt. Kuyt is better off playing on the right. That leaves with Voronin, Ngog and Babel... :O ...my my this worries me. And we didn't show any interests when opportunities are there to sign decent back-ups like Owen and Huntelaar. A healthy decent young promising striker like Huntelaar went to Milan for 13 million...  :glare:. Ciggy might be right, our owners might not be releasing Rafa's transfer funds fully to him. Rafa had to prioritise and he prioritised in getting replacement for Xabi, Aquilani. Now all the rumours are about us just trying to sign CB's at around 6 million. Maybe Rafa can't even spend 13 million on Huntelaar...

The squad has weathered the transfer blood letting relatively unscathed, Xabi wanted to leave and we got the best possible price for him. No other loses, Sami, Arby, Hamill etc.. were part of Rafa´s plans. Of course the defensive injury situation is unfortunate but thats life.

What has unsettled me were some terrible pre-season friendly performances. I think we would have struggled big time in the Charity League final against either of those teams. Rafas priority now has to gee up the lads and get them flying out of the traps on day one.

Yes the squad still needs a coupla new lads to act as safety stops, its a shame none of the reserves apparantly seem to full that role, but yes we´re ready to go.

Onwards and upwards, come on Red boys !  :)

Great thread and hopefully it will stay positive taff despite the first dig at the owners :;):

For me the squad does look the same as last season but with a little bit of extra dimenson with the additions of Aquaman and Johnson ,  hopefully the players will use the confidence and self belief they gained from last season to understand they are more than good enough to win the title and to apply themselves too it - hopefully we can have torres and gerrard fit together a few more times - reira can produce a bit more from the left - kuyt carries on as usual for us - masher continues being a terrier- yossi contines his end of season form - lucas steps up to become a good player for us agger gets his form back he did couple of years ago . Self belief from the club - support from the fans and a little bit of luck and we can have the title - im confident - the other teams are a little bit weaker and we must grab that chance and if people say it was a weak league because of the other teams i really couldnt give a monkeys .

Come on the Reds

Positives:
1) Johnson, easily the best right back in the country and should add a lot going forward
2) Senior players signing new contracts
3) Transfer window is still open and two signings Distan and Silva would leave us looking balanced and really strong. (This is more me clinging to some hope than a poitive I accept)
4) Managing not to get fleeced by Real Madrid for the first time when negotiating transfers

If we can get through the start then we have an excellent chance, I am worried by all the injuries though.

Well, the start is vital since we are much weaker than last season right now.

Right now Alonso, Arbeloa are sold, Agger, Skrtel, Aquaman unavailable for some time and only Johnson as an added player...

I was feeling really positive a month ago but not so right now.
I was expecting a CB a new rb if Arbeloa left, a new backup striker that could fill in for Torres and a new attacking midfielder.

Then Alonso got sold, which was very bad, and I expected Rafa to get even more funds but he only bought Aquaman for 2/3 of the cash and he is out 2 months.
Then Agger, Skrtel and Carra all seem to have injury problems.

In November when all are fit and ready I still only rate us about the same as last season, but what until then?

Sure, Man utd might be a bit of an unknown quantity but their squad strenght is pretty good and Chelsea will be about the same as last season getting over 80 pts.
