I have so far avoided this debate on kuyt - but here's my 2 pennies worth:
During his 2nd season Kuyt got some important european goals for us. For that I was thankful. However it was his league form that got me, and others, on his back. He scored 3 goals in 32 games (a goal every 10.67 games). Nowhere near good enough for a striker - whether he was played out on the wing or not. One of those 3 goals was with knee, another was a lucky deflection off his leg - yes they all count, but he missed so many opportunities and only scored 1 goal which wasn't thought of as "lucky". He went from Noevmber to April without scoring in the league. This is where the main bulk of criticism about Dirk Kuyt came from : his 2007-08 league form.
Over the course of that season, I got more and more frustrated with him, and wanted him sold. Last summer, I was praying that we'd sell him and bring in a dynamic winger that would score more that 3 league goals a season. I was almost disspointed when he was still on our books at the start of last season. Whilst I though he was an okay / good player. He was nowhere near Liverpool quality, and wanted an improvement on that right hand side.
And boy did we get it! - but not from a new signing - from Dirk Kuyt himself. Ol' Dirky boy put me in my place - and silenced (most of) his critics. He was everywhere - even more so than usual. We knew he had an eginee, we knew that from the previous 2 seasons. But off the back of the European championships, he was still going strong - right to the last minute of every game. His detirmination and fight helped in the comebacks early last season, and he notched up the goals too. 12 goals in the league as opposed to 3 last season - he quadrupled his league tally. Was it against Utd where he scored through all of his hard work? battling through tackles and getting the rub of the green with riccoches but still having the drive and detirmination to get the ball ahead of the utd defenders round him.
I think he is incredibly important to our current side. Not only on the pitch, but off it. I've read countless interviews how he gets on with everybody. He's one of Reina's best mates. Not that it affects our dressing room anymore, but he's one of only 3 (with stevie & carra) that Riise keeps in touch with - which shows the kind of person his is. I think his grit and detirmination help the team, his personality helps the team, and another season like last season will also help the team.
[I will edit this post again later as I want to put some more stats in, but can't do it at work at the moment]
