Meanwhile , back in the real world , is nobody watching "Rescue Me" ? produced co written and starring Dennis Leary it's been one of my favourite shows these last 2 years. As to be expected from someone with Leary's acid wit every week contains something that has me pmsl.

PS If anyone is interested in this. I would reccomend people maybe pick up 'With The Old Breed - At Peleliu and Okinawa' - by E.B Sledge and give it a read in advance of watching this. The Pacific is based on that book as well as another which I can't remember of the top of my head. I read Band of Brothers before actually seeing the show on BBC and it really helped to get sunk into the show once it started as you are obviously familiar with many of the characters.

BTW If anyone was wondering what channel it will be on, Sky have the rights for it however it will be airing on one of the Sky Movies channels.

I read Band of Brothers and of course, the tv series couldnt portray the terrible suffering and psychological trauma the troops suffered (on both sides) under the intense strain of combat - hence in my opinion books are always better than film. Some of the WW1 books make your blood curdle. I wonder why no major film has ever been made of the major WW1 battles? It seems a taboo subject compared to WW11.

Definatley too taboo Reg, not to mention there are probably not enough veterans around who even want to sit down with a director to get it looking accurate.

Also couldnt agree more on the books are better than tv/film. I am always reading my WW2 books over and over again. Right now I am back on D-Day (Steven Ambrose). Although I tend to buy more books on the European offensive. With the Old Breed is the only 1 I have on the Pacific side so i need to read up more or that once I finish it.

Yeah I dont know the Pacific war too well even though my uncle flew Catalinas out there. He used to fly the gurkhas on raids.... he used to cr@p himself because he´d fly them in, switch off the engines and glide out of the sky onto the water. They´d quietly debus into dingies and start for the shore at which point the gurkhas would start singing, laughing and lighting cigars! That would be the signal to my uncle to start the engines and fly the héll out of there before the japs opened up!

A couple of great books on a campaign are 'Russia's War: A History of the Soviet Effort: 1941-1945' by Richard Overy and 'Stalingrad: The Fateful Siege: 1942-1943' by Antony Beevor. Both are extremely readable and dont get bogged down in too much unnecessary detail.

I recommend them both, get the Overy book first as it sets the scene for the Beevor tale. IMHO they are the two best books on the subject.

I think WWI wasn't a "sexy" (sounds terrible to use the word) enough war for movies (Gallipoli, all quiet on the western front, and seargeant york are the only ones off the top of my head). trench warfare is a bit boring in comparison to blitzkrieg, normandy, bulge, holocaust, pearl harbour, iowa jima etc. FFS even the eastern front of the Euroean theatre is massively underplayed in terms of the number of movies. I am guessing because of the cold war, it would have been taboo to play up the russians beating the germans.

Although the authors credibility has been questioned (he claims to have been a member of the Gross Deutschland Division) either way, Guy Sajers "The Forgotten Soldier" is possibly the most detailed and moving story of war on the eastern front I've ever read , I urge anyone interested in the "Eastern Front" to get their mitts on it.

I have it Woof, very dramatic book down to the last page.

No I wouldnt because it focuses more on the romance of the individual rather than the tactical aspect of a theatre of war.

Fantastic film, unbelievable script that if it had been written as fiction would have been thrown out as fantasy.

Again there are some great biographies, I have an original WITH LAWRENCE IN ARABIA by Lowell Thomas Hardcover - Jan 1, 1924) which is over romanticised, there are more objective books out there. The Seven Pillars of Wisdom is too heavy, I cant get into it.

If you don't already have them Reg I'd recommend John Ericksons "The Road to Stalingrad" and "The Road to Berlin". Although heavy going at times they are both considered "bibles" when it comes to definitive accounts of germany's war against russia.
