Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Hopefully come january we get some of valencias great players this would be a big a big bonus for us as they would play brilliant under there ex manager and have understanding about each others game heres hoping anyway :) I like the way hes not having any messing around giving the internationals late training session tonight this fella means business no one can doubt his determination.

RAFAEL BENITEZ received a double injury boost today as Harry Kewell was declared fit and Antonio Nunez stepped up his comeback.

New signing Nunez (left) endured a nightmare start to his Anfield career when he damaged knee ligaments during his first training session.

Although he's not yet in full training, he's running again and has been pencilled in for a possible return to action in a reserve game with Sunderland next week.

Failing that, his Reds bow will be at Birmingham reserves on September 23.

Aussie midfielder Kewell missed the defeat to Bolton with a calf problem, but he's been training normally all week and is available for selection-against West Brom this Saturday.

Benitez has endured a frustrating fortnight as the majority of his squad has been on international duty.

The Spanish coach has organised a late training

session today as the likes of Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, Djibril Cisse, Milan Baros, Xabi Alonso and Sami Hyypia returned to Melwood.

Meanwhile, Benitez may target stars from his former club during the January transfer window, having now settled his dispute with the Spanish champions.

Benitez has been assured the £2m he was owed in bonuses for winning the Spanish title and UEFA Cup following a judgement by the Spanish Football Federation.

Benitez felt unable to conduct any business with his old club while the dispute was ongoing.

Now it's been resolved, he may reignite his interest in the likes of Mista and Ayala, who were the mainstays of his all-conquering Valencia side.

Benitez handed Valencia pay out

By Andy Hunter, Daily Post

RAFAEL BENITEZ was celebrating a £2.1million financial windfall last night after winning his four-month legal dispute with Valencia.

The Liverpool manager (left) took his former employers to a Spanish Football Federation tribunal after they refused to pay the remainder of his contract plus bonuses for winning two La Liga titles and the UEFA Cup in three seasons at the Mestalla.

Valencia argued Benitez was in breach of contract for joining Liverpool in the summer and claimed his departure had inflicted "economic, sports and moral damages" on the club.

But the Spanish Football-Federation, backed by their managers' association, stunned the UEFA Cup holders yesterday by ruling in Benitez's favour and awarding him three million euros.

Benitez was awarded 2.4m euros (£1.67m) while Pako Ayesteran, his right-hand man at Valencia and Liverpool, will receive 600,000 euros (£419,000) under the same ruling.

Valencia, who had hoped to escape with a one million euro punishment, have also been threatened with a 300,000 euro fine if they delay payments to the new Liverpool management team.

Benitez's dispute with the Spanish champions ruined any chance of bringing Valencia players to Anfield this summer as the Mestalla club refused to have any dealings with Liverpool.

But with the row at an end the Anfield manager may renew his interest in striker Mista when the transfer window reopens on January 1.

good news about the ref tho :D  but we got that pig linesman who dissaloud garcias goal maybe he lets us off with some offside players scoring since he got his last decition wrong with garcia :;):
LIVERPOOL V WEST BROMWICH ALBION - MEET THE REFEREE
Steve Dunn of Gloucester is the man in the middle for our next Premiership game against West Bromwich Albion at Anfield.

Steve steps in for Andy D'Urso who is currently serving a suspension for failing to send off Blackburn's Barry Ferguson in a game at Southampton after he cautioned the Scottish midfielder twice.

Steve is one of the elder statesmen of the refereeing fraternity - picking up the whistle in 1978. After 14 years he was promoted to the Football League then to the Premiership 3 years later, and then to the FIFA list 12 months on.

Although retired from the FIFA list of referees, he still managed a few plum games in Europe. One of his last appointments included a goal for Dietmar Hamann as Germany beat Israel 7-1 last year.

This will be his eighth visit in nine years to Anfield, and we have yet to taste defeat with him in charge, winning five games and drawing the other two. In fact we have only lost one game in the last twelve with Dunn in the middle, one of those games was the 2001 FA Cup Final against Arsenal.

The last time we had Dunn as a referee was the penultimate game of last season when we came away from St Andrews with all three points after a 3-0 victory against Birmingham City, a match that saw Emile Heskey's last goal in a Liverpool shirt. His last match at Anfield was in April 2003 when two goals in the last four minutes from Sami Hyypia and Steven Gerrard gave us a dramatic 2-1 win over Charlton Athletic.

The fourth official for the match is Richard Beeby, and his assistants are Gary Brittain and Glenn Turner. It was Glenn Turner who wrongly flagged for offside when Luis Garcia thought he had scored an equaliser at Bolton Wanderers in our last Premiership match.

I said Id like both :)
RAFAEL BENITEZ is planning a double swoop on former club Valencia.

The Liverpool chief this week won more than £1.5million in unpaid bonuses from his former employers.

And with that case settled, Benitez will return to the Mestalla during the January transfer window in an attempt to sign defender Roberto Ayala and striker Miguel Mista.

Argentina ace Ayala, 31, is out for two months with a knee injury.

But he should be back in action long before the window reopens.

And Mista, 25, played under Benitez at Tenerife, helping them to promotion before following the manager to Valencia.

BIG-MATCH FACTS

LIVERPOOL will be a hunting a 50th League victory over a winless West Bromwich Albion, when the pair lock horns at Anfield.

The Reds have been consistently inconsistent so far with one win, one draw and one defeat from their three Premiership outings, scoring and conceding on average a goal a game. They were shocked by a quick counter attack from Bolton last time out, and stumbled to a second 0-1 defeat in a week following the second leg loss to Graz AK in the Champions League Third Qualifying Round tie (won 2-1 on aggregate).

The Merseysiders did the 'double' over the Baggies with an aggregate 8-0 in their only previous Premiership meetings in the season before last. Michael Owen scored four times as Liverpool eased to a 6-0 victory at Anfield, having defeated the Midlanders 0-2 at the Hawthorns when goalkeeper Russell Hoult was sent off and Owen missed a penalty.

WEST BROMWICH ALBION go to Anfield in search of their first win of the season. Three points out of a possible 12 equals their start to 2002/03 - their only previous Premiership campaign. But they must win this match to keep pace with that performance of the season before last.

The Baggies have scored one goal in each of their four Premiership outings, but have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of the quartet. They have played 144 League games under Gary Megson and collected 216 points from a possible 432 - that's exactly 50%.

Albion have not won at Anfield in 17 League visits spanning 36 years. They've picked up just four points from those trips

dont get carried away with the spanish influence. although the players are excellent, a good manager should be able to identify talent, no matter what their nationality is, and be able to work people other than their own nationality. However, rafa will get us there
