Owen to man u on a free - Have we missed a trick?

The Premiership - General Discussion

Many people will say that Michael Owen had to take Manchester United's offer as the best chance of resurrecting his World cup dream in Fabio Capello`s England team.

But the truth is he will most likely be a bit-part player for the Red Devils and would have been much better served by signing for one of the lower Pre mier League teams he was talking to when United's offer came in.

At Hull City, for example, he would have played every injury-free minute and would have had a chance to really prove if he still has what it takes to cut it at the top level. Instead, he'll likely be reduced to coming on in the 80th minute to give Wayne Rooney and Co. a bit of a rest.

When I see the picture of Owen grinning holding the United scarf above his head, it shows just how low the little fella has fallen from his heyday as an Anfield idol.

Some may even say that he never really was an Anfield idol as he never was as close to the fans as his contemporaries Robbie Fowler or Ian Rush. That is true to a point but he was revered by the Liverpool faithful in the early days.

There were many great moments and some great goals, but that was all soured when he forced the then new manager, Rafa Benitez, to sell him for a knock-down price to Real Madrid in 2004.

And he has soured that relationship with the Liverpool fans after agreeing to join our arch-enemies.

Remember, this is not some foreigner like Gabriel Heinze or Carlos Tevez but a player who came up through the Liverpool youth set-up, so he knows exactly what it means to the Liverpool faithful to cross the divide.

But there is one ray of sunshine in all this, and it is that without bad luck, Michael Owen would have no luck at all.

He left Liverpool for sunny Madrid to play regularly in the Champions League, the very same year that Liverpool lifted the trophy on that glorious night in Istanbul in a fixture in which most players can only dream of playing.

Now we can all see where his latest bout of luck has left Newcastle United. So let's all hope that Owen's lucky streak continues with Manchester United. Relegation might be hoping for a little too much, though!

Tevez wont join LFC out of respect for Mn Ure fans, shame Owen does have an ounce of honour left in his passionless eyes.

Former reds players hold their heads high as they walk into Anfield after retirement, Owen? He's like that ugly moose you shagged the night before walking back into the pub the next night looking for more.

Tevez only decided he had respect for the manc fans when he found out that Liverpool could not match the wage offers of £130k per week that Chelsea and Man city were making.

Not true...

Carlos Tevez has branded Sir Alex Ferguson a "liar" - and vowed Premier League revenge on the Manchester United manager.

And the Argentine hit-man blamed Fergie's "lies" over his status in the champions' squad after last year's £30million signing of Dimitar Berbatov for driving him out of United.

Now Tevez, a huge favourite with the United fans, has promised to make Ferguson pay for the insult.

Tevez, who rejected the chance to stay at United even though the club met his £25.5m asking price, said: "Ferguson still believes I will be at United next season. He thinks I will return.

"But I know what I want and I know that Ferguson did not respect me as a player. Before Berbatov arrived in Manchester, Ferguson told me, 'You will still be the starting striker, so be cool'. But he lied to me! That is why I know I will not return to United.

"What I want to do next season is score against United. I promise I will not celebrate in front of the United fans but I will shout in Ferguson's face.

"You can be sure of that - and it will be one of the most beautiful things I have done in football."

If it wasn't about money why is he still in negotiation with Man City? While we may be the mancs no. 1 hate club, Citeh run us a very close second.

If Owen had have went to Everton which he nearly did in January then I dont think the feeling would have been so bad. It wouldnt have been a smooth ride for him, far from it, but I dont think the hatred would be as bad

It doesn't alter the fact that if he was choosing his new club out of respect for the fans he would have scratched Citeh AND Liverpool off his list. He was in negotiation with Liverpool until he found out we couldn't offer him £130k per week, and he is still in negotiation with Citeh...... because they CAN.

Well....talk about cutting his nose to spite his face if that is actually what he intended by signing for the scums.  Owen would be remembered as a legend for scoring numerous goals for us...but he has thrown all of that away now.

Do u think rooney will ever sign for us ? Why doesn't tevez wanna sign for us ?

Lost all respect for owen...

When all said and done it's a brave move by the manager you've got to give him that. If whoever we bring in doesn't hit the ground running, then the comparisons between him and Owen will be obvious. If boy wonder begins to fire at Man Utd, the media will be all over it. There will be lots of sideways glances and raised eyebrows, and some of the dissenting voices may even be coming from inside our own dressing room. It's inconcieveable that Owen won't have said to Carragher, "tell Rafa that if wants me I'll be there in a shot".

As for the medical exam, maybe we could get Deggen to go through it once he gets himself fit again.

Worrying what the media think is absolutely pointless, but if the media effect you're own opinion that much that is you're problem I'm afraid. I wouldn't for one minute believe you're motive to sign Michael Owen would be to primarily keep the media schtum would I?

I don't think we can really speculate neither about dissenting voices from inside the dressing room too much, the "glances" and "raised eyebrows" are probably just you're way of saying 'I wont be happy if Owen turns out to be a boy wonder as opposed to an injury prone mercinary,' to rally some strirring debates up further down the line.

But I suppose laying down you're theories now is a good way to comeback in 12 months to prove everyone wrong incase you're foresight is spot on.

Nice one Parky

Just to revisit this because it's been winding me up a bit. Parky, you come on here and give it the Larry Large, crown prince of largeness and already, after only 47 posts or something you're onto me.

Either you're extremely perceptive and have already worked me out (it nomally takes a bit longer) or, you are a re-invention of someone who I have previously had a row with (it's quite  along list admittedly  :D ) or even alternatively someone who already posts on the forum, but who decided to get all alter ego on me in order to label me a c...  ???

The more I think about it, I think you are an uber pro-Rafalite who has decided to come in under the radar and stir it up a bit. Get Your Bloody Self sorted son, that's what I say    :eyebrow
