What, did you play for Forest mate or am I reading that wrong?

I did yes, was there for a good few years.

forest played you? were you still 6 then?

Obviously, in their youth setup.

I started there when i was 7 and finished at 11. I couldn't make getting over to Notts twice a week and every weekend for games.

shame that your dad didnt take you more often

His choices it appears to me are Man Utd or Hull, and it's hardly as if he's turning us down as we don't look like we're going anywhere near him. Under the circumstances, although it would be lovely if he passed up the opportunity of playing under Ferguson and opted for the chance to play under Phil Brown instead, I think it's asking a lot.

I'm going to go out on a bit of a limb here and say I think we ARE missing a trick by not taking him on a free. Much has been made of him "fecking Rafa off" twice, but in fairness on the first occasion the manager by all accounts didn't really try that hard to keep him, and as we are seeing now the draw of Madrid is quite magnetic for many players. On the second occasion when he went to Newcastle, I was never myself entirely convinced that Rafa was totally committed to trying to re-sign him. It was only a hunch at the time, but "fecking Parry  " seemed to be heavily involved, as did the current chairman at the time who even stuck his own money up.

Now though, given our circunstances and the situation at hand, I simply cannot believe that if we signed Owen on a three year deal for 50K per week, that he wouldn't at some point score some goals whihc were important enough to at the very least go a large way towards repaying the 7.5 million quid outlay.

I think we've made a mistake by letting him go to Man Utd, and we may well live to regret it.

Additionally its a World Cup year this season. Owen is going to be working as hard as he can to make the squad. One thing we know about Owen is he needs good supply to score goals, he is not a self creating player.

Its a no brainer that Man Utd will be able to offer Owen far more scoring opportunities than Hull (I expect them to be fighting relegation again this season).

I find it hard to see the rationale as to why Rafa wouldn't sign him on a free. £50,000 a week seems cheap considering.

simple, Owen turned us down for Newcastle.

Rafa won't chase after him again.

spot on...

some people on here they don't want owen to come back... so why should they care if he goes to the mancs now...

Like bigmick said we lost a good opportunity to have a good back up for torres IMO... and if owen stays fit he's gonna score alot of goals even if he has lost his pace... because the mancs supporting play is good...

i dont think he'll be used sparingly... they play 4 forwards... have Rooney, Berbatov, valencia and Owen in their books now... unless they go out and sign another forward or a world class winger, id expect him to feature in most of their games when fit...
I expect Rooney to play a more ronaldo like role next season... roaming around the opposition area doing whatever he wants... berbatov always comes deep to help with the buildup... Owen is could very well be their new Nistelrooy...
With ronaldo gone they certainly need someone who can provide them with goals on a regular basis... not sure Rooney and Berbatov can do that...

Ian rush has back owens move to the scums

Michael Owen Has Ian Rush Backing Over Expected Manchester United Move

Liverpool legend Ian Rush believes Manchester United-bound forward Michael Owen can rise through adversity and prove his critics wrong. The Welshman believes that under Sir Alex Ferguson the former Real Madrid striker can produce exemplary form this season.

Owen has undergone a medical this morning, according to earlier reports, and has also agreed personal terms. He has reportedly had to take a drastic pay cut, with The Sun indicating that he has penned a £50,000 per week deal.

"People have knocked Michael Owen all his career but he comes back bigger and better," Rush told Sky Sports News. "People said he was finished years ago but he's a fantastic player who comes back stronger and better.

"[The talk] won't worry him, I know the way he is and he doesn't have to prove anything anyway.

"It's a chance for Michael to get back and score some goals. He'll get chances for Manchester United and will score goals."

Rush continued by remarking that he would have preferred to see the England striker at his former club, Liverpool. "Personally, I'd like to have seen him at Liverpool, but they haven't lost their best strikers. [Manager Rafael Benitez] will be happy with what he's got,” Rush concluded.

If owen stays fit he may turn out to be a brilliant buy for fergie... Fergie is known for transforming certain strikers into goal machines.. He did quite well with sheringham, larson and who knows maybe owen now..

I still expect us to go out and sign a backup forward simply because we have to... hope its not a 10+mill flop...
Cant see how anyone wouldnt want Owen back at liverpool, hes done well wherever he's been... at least his goalscoring records say so...
I expect him to do very well wherever he ends up... what are the odds on him ending up the leagues top goalscorer if he goes to manutd ?!
id put a tener on that.

I'll take that bet.

Also - he hasn't done well wherever he's been - he's done badly since he screwed us and moved to Real. He wasn't even picked to help Newcastle fight relegation. He's chronically injured and in my opinion will never succeed at the highest level again.

I loved him when he played for Liverpool - I met him once at Anfield after he got man of the match against Portsmouth and it was great but he gave up on Liverpool. He was repeatedly asked to sign a new contract and kept giving vague answers about working on a new deal. He was worth £20 million but he managed to drag out negeotiations until he only had a year left on his contract. Rafa arrived and asked him and Stevie to stay - he went and Gerarrd stayed - we got a derisory £8 million because he was clear he walked have walked for free a year later.

He had a tough time at Real, I was glad to see it, even more so when we won the European Cup. He was the supposed saviour of Newcastle, he's scored something like 30 goals in the last four seasons and then walks on a free ready to sell himself to the highest bidder.

There's no way Rafa was going to re-sign and I personally don't want him back. His career at the top level is over and he would just disappoint as he bounces from injury to injury. The only way he could have been of use would been on a pay as you play deal and even then I wouldn't want him.

It's clear we need more options up front but Owen is not the answer.
