I think this is the worrying part :- Spain midfielder Xabi Alonso has given Benitez a further problem. Alonso has antagonised his manager by discussing personal terms with Madrid without official permission. The player admitted that the pound’s fall in value against the euro was a factor in considering his future. “Of course we think about it,” Alonso said. “When you see your contract down by 30% you cannot be happy.”

The pound is worth €1.18, but when Alonso signed a five-year contract in June 2007 it was worth €1.48.

Not only for Alonso, but all our foreign players will be looking at their contracts and reassessing if its still worth their while being here.

Very worrying with clubs with Barca and Madrid sniffing round for the first sign of weakness.

The pound will go back up, it always does.

Still, the pound is stronger than the Euro so when you get paid in Euro's its still less than being paid in pounds.

Its not just the pound that has dropped in value though Parky, the top rate of tax has gone up as well mate.

In fact I think the pound is still quite strong against the Dollar, its just against the Euro that we are really struggling.

I don't believe Rafa is stupid enough to sell both Xabi and Masch whatever the spanish papers are reporting. I can live with selling Masch for 40 million. But I can't live with selling them both for whatever price. For the past 2 seasons our best formation has been where Gerrard plays up front with Torres. This means that we need both Alonso and Masch. If we sell Masch, we could still bring in an attacking player like Silva/ Etoo/ Villa and think about putting Gerrard back in midfield, and the team won't be too much disrupted. But if we sell both of them... I can't imagine who Rafa would bring to replace both of them. If one of them absolutely had to go I would sell Masch to Barca for 20 million + Eto'o provided Eto'o really wants to play for us. And with that 20 million + some top up seal the deal for Silva. I believe that will be an improvement on the team:

                                  Reina

Johnson        Carragher/Skrtl      Agger       Aurelio/Insua

Silva/Kuyt          Alonso                          Riera/Benayoun
                                         Gerrard

                      Eto'o             Torres

Otherwise I won't sell both of them unless we get proven quality world class player like Eto'o. I guess 30 million + Yaya Toure is not too bad either but I don't see it happening. Toure probably is going somewhere else and that's why Barcelona is scrambling to sign Masch. In anyway, if we HAVE to sell Masch news that both Real and Barca bidding for him is better than one of them clubs low balling us.

Is it struggling because of the tax, because going by my calculations 1 pound is the equivalent of 1.18 Euro. Therefore I would not say it is "struggling" even if it used to be higher.

Are you talking about this 50p tax Saint?

If so does that mean for every one pound earned the get taxed 50p on it?

If Liverpool sell Mascharano for 40 million pounds just say, surely they'll pay tax on that. Does this mean they'll only recoup 20 million ?

If thats true, just do a Bono and open up a Swiss bank account.

The big problem about trying to sign Eto' would be his wages, he supposedly wants almost £200k per week ....... TAX FREE.

If you gave him what he asked for, that would mean Gerrard and Torres would want similar. Great player, but his unrealistic demands make it very difficult to see it happening .

The problem is mate that if you buy a house in Spain for 148,000 Eur....... that used to cost £100,000. Now you could only buy a house for 118,000Euros with that same £100,000, so in effect you have lost 30,000 Euro. Multiply that by the price of house that footballers buy and you are talking a considerable sum. (especially when you consider the cost of living is much cheaper over there)

It also makes buying players from England a more attractive proposition too mate. Ronaldo cost Madrid £80,million or 94.4million Euro, before the £ lost ground he would have cost Madrid  118.4million Euro, so Madrid got him for 24million Euro less than it would have cost them before.

Conversely it makes our buying players from europe that much more expensive too.

This is translated from from the Spanish newspaper AS, i\Its basically saying  that Xabi will tell Rafa that he wants to go to Real Madrid after the confederations cup.

http://www.as.com/futbol....Tes

Xabi Alonso expects to be left out of 30 million euros

Xabi Alonso wants his sporting future is linked to Real Madrid from next season. For now, you'll have to wait for Benitez gives green light for sale. So talk to the technical face to face and ask you to accept his motion for a reasonable price.

Xabi Alonso is clear that he wants to play at Real Madrid, is as clear as Villa. Both these days in South Africa, say that they would like to share a future together on the same sports team. So when Spain ends its participation in the Confederation Cup (the day playing the final 28), Xavi Alonso will have a direct and serious conversation with Rafa Benitez will tell you where you want to leave Liverpool and is not to sabotage his departure .

.We want to explain that the Spanish League, which Liverpool in his time is expired and you do not want the Madrid train passes a second time on his door and was not in place to catch up. In addition, it will ask you to leave out of 30 million euros at most, an amount that Florentino Perez would be willing to pay.

The midfielder hopes to Benitez because although it is between the statements of both the technician who said that not transferred to Xabi Alonso for less than 40 million. It's crazy to be part of a renewed in Madrid where you can play alongside Kaka, Cristiano or Casillas and Ramos, who already are quite familiar and with which is great.

Alvaro Arbeloa is another of the names that could come into the negotiation. The right side, just contract in 2010, could be included in the transaction if the price was affordable. A Pellegrini is a player who likes to also come from the quarry of Madrid and knows the house and the philosophy of the club. Florentino and Valdano be willing to pay for it about five million euros. So the amount of the operation of the two players in this case would be 35 million euros.

Torres going nowhere, trust me. This is waste of time.

If there is a major transfer out of Anfield it will provbably be Masch. TBH, I am pretty resigned to losing him now, have not seen anything from him dispelling rumours of his wife being unsettled. If he is going to go we must dig our heels in and get the maximum possible price and use the money wisely with one or two big money signings and not a multitude of £6-£7 million squad players.
Villa up front alongside Torres.
