Spineless next season?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

benitez has gone on record recently talking about the spine of the team and mentioning the importance of keeping reina, mascherano and alonso as part of that spine. for one thing they are all amongst the best in the world in the positions they play, and for another they have all been with us for long enough to be part of the well-oiled machine that we have become in recent times.

however, reading all the transfer rumours, and with some of them worryingly gaining momentum, there is the slim chance that we would be without these three players next season. there is strengthening talk of pepe and masch heading off for silverware and fat paychecks with barca and we still don't really know what is going to happen with xabi.

so if it all comes true how do we feel? we'd likely see the best part of 70 or 80 million for them, enough to buy in some decent quality despite this year's crazy inflations. but we're looking at next season in a semi-rebuilding state... again.

for me, the loss of these three would be nigh on disastrous. forget the money. following mick's theory we have set up a pretty good 'base camp' just now and are well set for a push for the top next season. the momentum is with us and we have the majority of an excellent, settled and premiership experienced first team with which to do it. man utd have just lost by far and away their best player and talisman, arsenal are still nowehere really and chelsea have to start with a new manager again. we could be in another excellent position to make the most of these circumstances.

in my opinion, starting with a new keeper and two new centre mids who would certainly be not as good as what we have now is going to be a massive step backwards.

i pray to the god i don't believe in that it doesn't happen. maybe others feel different and think that 70 or 80 million is too much money to turn down.

i cant disagree with that at all - loosing three big players like that would be a disaster and we would have to rebuild again and i cant see us winning anything if that happens . we spent 4 years building up to where we are now - why dismantle it and have to start again when we are so close ?

We are a bit under siege at the moment. I was expecting the summer exit talk to be all about Babel and Agger, I didnt see our midfield being picked off. Ive got a feeling we'll lose either xabi or mascherano. I hope not, just think theres too much being said by the agents and a hell of a lot not being said by the main men.

If it is to happen and one of them goes, in a strange way I hope its soon and not right at the end of the window so we can getthings sorted.

I think a lot of it comes from the news about the debt - as soon as that was published and Madrid went mad the specualtion was going to through the roof . So far onily gerrrard has been imune to it but im expecting a report saying madrid are bidding 50 mil for him to appear soon

i thnk it was always going to be this way after our eyecatching performances inthe CL and league (bound to attract the big clubs) ... but the not winning anything (gives players itchy feet)

Don´t believe the media, Barça has only 35 millions of euros to spend.

I agree the thread starter, and I'd be extremely worried if one of the players of the spine left. Let alone more than one.

Don't worry, a lot of it is just the media playing it up and making a mountain out of a molehill. Prob all mash said was "yes, I think Barcelona is a good team" (obviously) and then the media spins and spins requoting "yes I think Barca is a good team to play for" and then spin spin by other newspapers... you know the drill.

For the record, Liverpool FC has already stated there have been NO approaches by any team to any of the players mentioned.  :)

What bothers me is the fact Mascha isn't ruling out a move from Anfield. I understand with those kind of offers, you can't really just turn your head, but come on Mascha. On Football Manager 09 Juventus were looking to sign him and I rejected the offer, leaving him disappointed and the bastard stopped giving me good performances.

I'm more worried about Alonso now. Masch has came out and said he is flattered but he's happy here, put my mind at ease a little. I can't see either actually leaving tho

And Real Madrid are begginning to REALLY p!ss me off!  :veryangry

Well Alonso is happy here too but he hasn't ruled out an exit. And with that little rat Messi constantly pestering Mascha about going to Barca I wouldn't be surprised to see this get out of hand

Yer, Messi you sh!tehouse, how dare you!  When Gerrard made all those public requests for Rafa to sign Barry or when Torres said we should sign Villa it was one thing, but these comments from the little Argie are well out of order. :D
