Yaya Toure (possible swap deal)
Who else is there who does the same job who is available?

I think Lucas could probably do Maschers job. Lucas has tended to come on in the Alonso role which he clearly is not in the same class but he could be groomed to be the stopper when we require one. Against some of the lesser teams in the EPL we do not need a Mas type player but someone who can open up defences.
If you mention someone other than Lucas, then I wouldn't be against your comment as much. There is no way in the world that Lucas can do what Mas does. The answer is never. Mas is so crucial to our offense especially in counter attack. Lucas just doesn't have the work rate or tackling skill, speed or the discipline to do the same job. If lucas is our answer for Mas leaving, then good luck....
If the rumours is true and if Barca is stupid enough to offer Yaya and 45 million. I would take it as Yaya would be a much better replacement. Even better would be if we can then use the 45 million to get villa, then SG can drop back to CM and yaya would only be used as cover for alonso and SG, then we would have depth and don't have to rely on Lucas ever.

I wake up this morning to hear the bbc reporting that
Mascherano is in talks with Barcelona for 20 mil
Pepe Reina in talks with Barcelona for 17mil
Alvaro Arbeloa in talks with Barcelona for 8 mil
and the way they were talking its going to happen
add itr all up it comes to 45MIL??? how much loss did we make, its very strange, what the hell is going on with the club.
G&H were back in talk with RBS on monday and no news has come out.

Thats why I stated when we require a stopper, Mas only really comes into his own when we are playing the top attacking sides. Lucas may not be the answer but if we get £45m for Mas I would want us to spend it on attacking players and not just to replace him.

17M for Reina? not good enough. Manchester United are likely to pay 30M for the Villarreal keeper Lopez. With that I say it all.
The good thing about this news of the Spanish giants (with fresh money) wanting our players is that it's a sign of the power of our squad.
We're much more than just Torres and Gerrard.

As you had said, Mas is so important when we play any top side. This include other teams from Europe also. THese are the kind of games that we must have Mas. These are the kind of game that matters. There is no guarantee you can find a replacement same as Mas even when you have 45million. Otherwise, Barca would have gone for it and leave Mas alone. If we rely on Lucas to be an adequate backup (this weakness will further exploit if without Mas), our hopes of winning anything would never happens. If Lucas can cut it, Rafa wouldn't even gone out and tried to sign Barry in the first place.
I think if we can get someone like Senna, we can make do only if we can get Villa. Of course best case scenerio would be Mas for Yaya and 45million but don't see it happening as this means Mas will worth at least 60 million if you count what Yaya is worth.

I thought he was looking at Barry to replace Alonso not Mas.

I give up....You think that Barry would have just been used to substitue for Xabi alone only?? You are getting picky on words and no point discussing this then.....
Anyway, just wondering why Torres would say openly he wanted both Villa and Silva here. Would this put extra pressure on the owners or does he knows something we don't?? Also, both Hicks and Gillette already knew they are not welcomed here and most fans wanted them gone. But would this be a perfect opportunity for them to gain support from the fans if in fact they have a scret vault this year to be able to get both Villa and Silva? If you asked me, I wouldn't bet on it but stranger things had happened.....
