Yaya Toure looks set to leave Barcelona. If Mascherano wants to leave us and Barcelona are willing to give us Toure and money on top we should go for it. Toure is an excellent player, stronger than Masch and a better passer.

It would be an awesome problem to have, but you would have to leave out one of the following 12 for every single game: (bearing in mind kuyt the hardworker and on great form last season will prob not be dropped)

                        Reina

Johnson      Carra      Agger       Aurelio

            Alonso      Masherano

Kuyt                                           Silva

                      Gerrard

            Torres              Villa

And as good as villa is, would it disrupt the gerrard-torres partnership? – Also (with the exception of the recent new Zealand game) – torres plays better and scores more when he plays on his own, rather than with a strike partner

thats bollox. Economics? have u considered even if we did purchase him for £40m that the figure could be spread over 4 years to reap marketing benefits of Villa shirts?

or 5 million over 8 years or 2.5 million over 16 years.  :censored: if we stretch it long enough we could have him for a pound a week.

Maybe its this that has sparked our interest in Villa?
That would mean us going back to 442 though.

Real once paid a little more than 45 mil for Zidane, and now barca is offering the same amount for masch. and masch is no zidane, so this is a good offer for us.
although we may have to switch to a 442 formation, buying another striker to replace masch.

I am a bit disappointed with Mas as it was us who rescued him from his West Ham hell, but I would prefer to keep Alonso out of them both and if it meant we could get Villa then so be it.

Ok, I am probably going to get shot down inflames here but as I see it losing Mas mught not be so critical, yes he is a brilliant midfield stopper but offers little going forward and is not a play maker like Alonso. I think Lucas could probably do Maschers job. Lucas has tended to come on in the Alonso role which he clearly is not in the same class but he could be groomed to be the stopper when we require one. Against some of the lesser teams in the EPL we do not need a Mas type player but someone who can open up defences.

I too side in favour of MAscherano leaving over Alonso. But who will fill his place?

He holds an unmatchable skill in the squad meaning we would have to buy to replace. Mascherano is quality but if Phil Neville can do a job for Everton then maybe we don't have to over spend to replace him. Its times like these you wish we had managed to keep hold of Sissoko.

Possible options:

Cattermole? Looking impressive for under-21s at the moment, good midfield engine and would not have to pay too much.
Flamini? May be tempted in a return to the premiership
Palacios? Proven success in the premiership

If you mention someone other than Lucas, then I wouldn't be against your comment as much. There is no way in the world that Lucas can do what Mas does. The answer is never. Mas is so crucial to our offense especially in counter attack. Lucas just doesn't have the work rate or tackling skill, speed or the discipline to do the same job. If lucas is our answer for Mas leaving, then good luck....

If the rumours is true and if Barca is stupid enough to offer Yaya and 45 million. I would take it as Yaya would be a much better replacement. Even better would be if we can then use the 45 million to get villa, then SG can drop back to CM and yaya would only be used as cover for alonso and SG, then we would have depth and don't have to rely on Lucas ever.
