Day 1:
After bad weather caused the opening ceremony to be postponed, the on field play set the tournament off with a bang!
A big upset occurred with a gripping last ball win for the Netherlands over the hosts, England.
After racing to 89-0 after 10 overs. With every predicting a near 200 score, just 73 runs yielded from the next 10 overs. So, England finished on a respectable 162-5. With this seeming to be a good score to defend, Wright commented "this is more than enough and if our bowlers perform, we will win the match".
So as Netherlands embarked on their run chase, it quickly became evident that they were there for the long haul. They actually exceeded England's half-way total by posting 91-3 after 10 overs. England now new they were in a game. And as the weather worsened once more, their task began to become even more difficult.
It all boiled down to the last over. A missed run-out a few overs before stemming from a poor Collingwood throw didn't help matters!
So Broad with his unusual tactic of round the wicket was to bowl the last over. With Holland needing just 7 runs from 6 balls. Here's SkySport's commentary of the last over.
A single from the first ball as Broad misses the stumps from a few yards away with ten Doeschate not even in the picture. They'll run for everything here. Six from five. Another scampered single from the next ball. Broad dives into the stumps with the ball in hand this time, but it slips out at the vital moment. It's Broad's hand that dislodges the bails. Five from four, ten Doeschate back on strike. Drop! England have made an almighty horlicks of this. Ten Doeschate miscues a drive straight back at Broad, but the ball bursts through his hands and not only does he not take the wicket he allows a single. Four from three. Schiferli misses the next one, but there's an easy bye through to the keeper. Three from two. Another single from the fifth ball of the over. Two to win from the final ball. Shciferli on strike. What a start to this tournament we've had here. Foster thinks about coming up to the stumps, but he's sent back. After some very long committee meetings, we're ready to go. Key is in close to the stumps in case of a bye. Schiferli hits the last ball straight back at Broad, who throws at the stumps going for the glory. He misses, it allows a second run from overthrows and the Netherlands have done it from the final ball of the match!
This was actually shocking from England in the field.
England have to beat Pakistan to stand a chance of qualifying now! And they have to bank on Holland Beating them as well.
