Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Hangeland mick... not a bad shout but im not sure he'd be much of an improvement on what we got now tbh...
On a side note though, after Pennant, Bellamy, Keane..etc shouldnt we be telling Rafa to look for players outside the prem.. cheaper options with similar quality if not better ?! Dont get me wrong theres some good players who are or could be available for cheap in the prem (Owen and Tuncay being prime examples) but im thinking players from other leagues (Spanish or Italian maybe) might be better options if we cant afford to sign big names....

Rosina from Italy is an excellent player and his club just got relegated... Valencia have a number of good players who would all be good additions to our squad and shouldnt cost much given their financial situation (Joaquin, Mata, Miguel, even some of their midfielders)
Saviola and Crespo should be available for free and Gudjohnsen seems to be on his way out of Barce for peanuts... Theres many other names out there of similar quality all around the world who would cost less... Lets just hope Rafa gets it right and no more Dossena and Lucas like signings who take us nowhere.... Either spend on a bunch who would improve our squad or save it up until we can afford a big name for big bucks...

Oh and by the way... With us selling Keane and releasing Pennant from his contract and not making any buys in the jan window... add to that the CL money and whatever we get from our league position and the few mill we'd get from selling some of our fringe players (Voronin, Leto, Anderson, Itnadje... even if we somehow keep Alonso, Dosser, Babel and the likes)...

Im pretty sure we'd have quite a bit to spend in the summer... i'd say around the 30mill mark would be about right going by what we've been spending in past years...

I tend to agree mate, would Rafa have signed a new contract without a few assurances here and there?

Arshavin reckons we should sign Anyukov.

Arshavin tips Liverpool to sign Anyukov

Arsenal midfielder Andrey Arshavin has tipped Liverpool’s Rafael Benitez to sign his former Zenit St Petersburg teammate Aleksandr Anyukov and hinted that Sir Alex Ferguson should look towards Igor Akinfeev if he wants to replace Edwin van der Sar in the Manchester United goal. Speaking ahead of Russia’s World Cup qualification match with Finland, the 28-year-old playmaker fielded questions from local press about life in England and also which players he felt could follow him to the Premier League.

“Given that Van der Sar will not be around forever, Ferguson is most in need of a goalkeeper,” Arshavin stated.

“I therefore advise him to sign Akinfeev…and Liverpool? Perhaps Anyukov.”

Anyukov, a right sided wing-back, has been a favourite of Guus Hiddink in the Russian national team for several years as well as accumulating both domestic and UEFA Cup titles with Zenit St Petersburg. A steely competitor, the 26-year-old is known for his runs and effervescent wing-play.

Miguel and Jaouqin from Valencia, both are really talented players but there careers have stalled on gone backwards in the last few years, that combinbed with the fact that Valencia are broke could tempt them into a cheap sell, and i think Rafa has in him to breathe fresh life into there careers.

In The Times:

We can outspend United, claim Liverpool
Despite their recently published levels of debts, the Merseyside club say that only Chelsea have more cash to splash

LIVERPOOL have reacted bullishly to claims that they are on the point of financial meltdown by insisting they expect to be able to outspend both Manchester United and Arsenal in the transfer market this summer.

A senior Liverpool source told The Sunday Times last night: “We have more spare cash to spend than any club except Chelsea.”

The source, who has detailed knowledge of the 2007 takeover at Anfield by the American businessmen Tom Hicks and George Gillett and insight into how they have run the club since, also says:

¤ the transfer budget will be a minimum of £20m plus sales this summer and that manager Rafael Benitez “is free to exceed it” if he can “make a convincing case”

Liverpool are not subject to some of the financial constraints on transfer dealings that limit Manchester United and Arsenal, who are more indebted to outsiders including banks and institutions

¤ Benitez is “an amazing guy who knows he has a healthy transfer budget to augment one of the world’s strongest squads”.

The source also suggested Hicks and Gillett had two regrets over their takeover. First, they reneged on an initial promise not to put some of their buyout debt directly onto Liverpool; and second, they are unable to start work on the new Stanley Park stadium “because the world’s fallen apart financially”.

They both want to remain at Liverpool, ideally in partnership with a new investor — yet to be found — with deep pockets to help fund the stadium. However, more than £58m channelled into Kop Football Ltd (Liverpool’s UK holding company) from an arm of the Hicks-Gillett operations based in the Cayman Islands is “evidence in cash” of the owners’ commitment. That money is part of £421.6m owed by KFL to all creditors combined at the end of July 2008.

Premier League debt is back in the spotlight after Deloitte’s annual review of football finance showed top-flight clubs owe in total £3.1bn, two-thirds by the “Big Four”. Chelsea owe Roman Abramovich £701m. Manchester United owe banks and hedge funds £649m and other creditors about £50m more. Arsenal owe £416m, spent largely on the Emirates Stadium and on property development at Highbury.

Kop Football Ltd posted losses of £42.6m for the year to July 2008, mainly down to interest payments of £36.5m on loans taken out by Hicks and Gillett to buy Liverpool.

well... im pretty sure we have cash to spend... 20million is a minimum before selling any players im guessing and if we end up selling a player or two, we could very easily end up outspending everyone else in the league YET AGAIN.... its become something of a foregone conclusion blaming the yanks for every other failing of our when it comes to transfers .... a quick look back at any of the threads that hold the lengthy discussions about our transfer records and how they compare to those of United, Chelsea and Arsenal shows that (ever since Rafa took over) we have outspent pretty much everyone in the league bar Chelsea... even last year we spent around the 40-45 mill mark .. ofcourse we have very little to show for that now but hey... Parry's gone so ill be expecting Kaka, Messi and the likes to be holding up the shirt any day now.. :p

I really can't see the club not stumping up at least £10m-£20m for transfers, the question is how WISELY Rafa will spend it and going on last summer's signings we might be better off with only £10m than £40m+.

I'm not sure Distin is a great idea, past 30 and shouldn't do more than sit on the bench so why pay £2m for a (usually) non-tactical sub? That's like paying £3m for a keeper to sit on his Rs.....................whoops!

There are good strikers out there that don't have to cost £20m+, paying £10m, £15m, £20m and even £30m is no guarantee of better quality. It may be likelier the player you get is better, but the club selling won't say "by the way, if it doesn't work out you can have a full refund". In some ways we'd be better off steering clear of the much talked about players like Barry, Johnson, Richards (to a degree), Tevez, Villa, Santa Cruz, Downing etc as their price may simply get pushed up by media speculation if nothing else.

btw it's one thing to list a few names and say we'll sell those to raise funds, something different to find a buyer and actually get the player to f off. I've seen Owen linked with a number of clubs and mentions in most that he'd have to take a 50% or 70% pay cut. Just because a club is interested and the selling club is willing to accept their offer doesn't mean the player will agree terms. And while we may have low regard for the likes of Leto, Babel, Plessis, Lucas, N'Gog, Dossena etc doesn't mean Rafa doesn't see them having a future. All we see is rumours a club is interested and we are ready to offload, doesn't mean there is any substance to those links
Never buy from PC World, product quality is poor and their 'customer service' is even poorer

After that article it would be silly if Rafa was then not given enough for a transfer. I think we will get a few freebies/cheapos, but we should still spend a bit too.

In the past Rafa has complained "that the deals were not done quickly enough" and he would like his
team "To have a whole pre season together".

I don't think now that Rafa is in charge of his own signings instead of Parry that we
will have to wait the whole summer to find out what next seasons team will be.
