Day 1:

After bad weather caused the opening ceremony to be postponed, the on field play set the tournament off with a bang!

A big upset occurred with a gripping last ball win for the Netherlands over the hosts, England.

After racing to 89-0 after 10 overs. With every predicting a near 200 score, just 73 runs yielded from the next 10 overs. So, England finished on a respectable 162-5. With this seeming to be a good score to defend, Wright commented "this is more than enough and if our bowlers perform, we will win the match".

So as Netherlands embarked on their run chase, it quickly became evident that they were there for the long haul. They actually exceeded England's half-way total by posting 91-3 after 10 overs. England now new they were in a game. And as the weather worsened once more, their task began to become even more difficult.

It all boiled down to the last over. A missed run-out a few overs before stemming from a poor Collingwood throw didn't help matters!

So Broad with his unusual tactic of round the wicket was to bowl the last over. With Holland needing just 7 runs from 6 balls. Here's SkySport's commentary of the last over.

A single from the first ball as Broad misses the stumps from a few yards away with ten Doeschate not even in the picture. They'll run for everything here. Six from five. Another scampered single from the next ball. Broad dives into the stumps with the ball in hand this time, but it slips out at the vital moment. It's Broad's hand that dislodges the bails. Five from four, ten Doeschate back on strike. Drop! England have made an almighty horlicks of this. Ten Doeschate miscues a drive straight back at Broad, but the ball bursts through his hands and not only does he not take the wicket he allows a single. Four from three. Schiferli misses the next one, but there's an easy bye through to the keeper. Three from two. Another single from the fifth ball of the over. Two to win from the final ball. Shciferli on strike. What a start to this tournament we've had here. Foster thinks about coming up to the stumps, but he's sent back. After some very long committee meetings, we're ready to go. Key is in close to the stumps in case of a bye. Schiferli hits the last ball straight back at Broad, who throws at the stumps going for the glory. He misses, it allows a second run from overthrows and the Netherlands have done it from the final ball of the match!

This was actually shocking from England in the field.
England have to beat Pakistan to stand a chance of qualifying now! And they have to bank on Holland Beating them as well.

England are through and were excellent against Pakistan.

Looks like Pakistan could go out unless they win and win well against the dutch.
That would be a major surprise. But to be fair they were terrible against England.

I know there have not been many readers or posts in this thread but did anyone see Chris Gayle against the aussies ?
Amazing shots, 6 sixes and one of them went out of the ground into the street  :D
De Villiers was class yesterday for South Africa as well who looked like the top side in the tournament without a doubt.

Chris Gayle is a monster! He just batters them.

Did you see the catch by that Scottish guy against SA? Caught Boucher in the deep!  :oh:

England played very well, but in all fairness they were awful.

Max,

This is a world cup  ???

Yeah i seen that, fantastic catch that was. He also batted well.
It was only him and the spinner bowler that could get any real credit in that match for the Scots.

Agreed on Pakistan they were so poor, i was really surprised by them.
They are meant to be in poor form but offered nothing really.
And in the field they were disgraceful.

Suits us though  :D

They have the best T20 record in the world!  :oh:

Agreed, my grandma could've fielded better than them, and she's blind.

On another note, can that Scot play for England? He's half decent  :Oo:

Am sure he probably could at some point as the skipper has played test cricket for us in the past i think.
An also Morgan is irish and plays for us.

I have a hard time taking T20 seriously, lacks the potential ODIs and Tests do in terms of swinging one way then the other. You'd think the very shortest format would make the games close, if anything a side can crumble trying to post a good target - see England vs South Africa and the awful shot selection. Had that been a 50 over match England wouldn't have worried about a slow start and probably posted a total they might have defended.

So how many have been close contests?

Nope : IND vs WIN. India posted just 153/9 with a bit of a late recovery, Windies won with eight balls left and seven wickets in hand

Nope : PAK vs SRI. Looks close in scores, but never really was for a low scorer

Nope : ENG vs SAF. England fell apart

Nope : IRE vs NZE. Ireland collapsed badly, out of their depth again in the "super eight" of a competition

Nope : IND vs IRE. India won by eight wickets with 15 balls to spare

Close : SRI vs WIN. Windies falling 17 runs short of parity, a good T20 total for Sri Lanka

Nope : HOL vs PAK. 173/5 vs 93 all out says it all

Close : NZE vs SAF. ONE run in it

Close : AUS vs SRI. Reasonably close, six balls to spare and six wickets in hand

Nope : BAN vs IRE. Ireland passed a modest total with six wickets and 10 balls to spare

Nope : ENG vs PAK. Surpisingly comfortable win for England in light of their opening humbling

Nope : SCO vs SAF. Scotland bowled out for 81 having conceded a sizeable total to the saffers

Nope : AUS vs WIN. West Indies crusing home with 25 balls to spare and seven wickets in hand

Close : BAN vs IND. Close-ish, only 25 runs in a reasonably high scoring game

Nope : SCO vs NZE. Only seven overs a side, the kiwis won with six balls and seven wickets in hand

Close : ENG vs HOL. Went to the last ball, only a stupid overthrow stopped it going to a decider over (whatever they call it)

Not sure I've got ALL the games there, but not many close ones for a contest that is only 20 overs a side. I'd say close in a T20 is going into the last 4-5 overs with the result in the balance, some of these games are nearly over with 4-5 overs to go.
Don't panic Mr Mainwaring! My Owzat account is locked by a seeming flaw in the board system. I changed my e-mail address, but that left me needing to be re-activated and therefore powerless to even post or notify a mod.
