Liverpool bid for Sylvain Distin to replace Sami Hyypia

Liverpool have offered £2million to Portsmouth for Sylvain Distin in an attempt to replace Sami Hyypia, who has left for Bayer Leverkusen after ten years at the club. The 31-year-old defender has one year left on his contract at Fratton Park, after joining from Manchester City two years ago.

While we did concede a few sloppy goals and indeed conceded four to Arsenal (and Chelsea), our defence was still pretty solid. Reina was close on winning another "golden glove", and as I indicated the other day in another thread, our title challenge was derailed by a spell of P12 W5 D7 L0 F21 A9 PTS 22 smack in the middle of the season - the draws were three 0-0 and three 1-1 so scoring more of a problem than defending.

We need a back-up striker, someone to play LWF and preferably also able to play CF, and a RB. Then we can worry about another CB, perhaps a younger CB since we have three to choose from. If our spending on Agger and Skrtel is anything to go by then we'd spend £6m on a new one, do we have £6m to spare given other areas need attending?

nah, we need backup

sami played 18 games last season, quite significant really

2m quid on Distin is almost like having him for free , you won't get much better than that

Distin for 2 mil quid as a very proven prem cb would be a great bit of business and provide good back up to agger and carra and skrtel

Zhirkov and Carvalho.  Steal em both.

Carvalho would be a great buy.

Practically free is a great term to use regarding £2m. If I take a few mortgages out now I might be able to get a few houses for 25% of free. What can possibly go wrong? :;):
All round the fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and could he play!)
Stevie Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
'Bout the glory, round the Fields of Anfield Road

That stupid yahoo transfer thingy mentioned Lahm.  Think it was just fans commenting on it though, and still think that we aren't linked to him.

totally agree mate, & why should he! we don't need another CB.

our transfer kitty needs to be used wisely, on where the side needs addition ie- another RB to give AAa kick up the @rse, make him fight for his place, let's face it it worked wonders for alonso!

i would hate to see alonso go i trulely believe we need to build around the midfield with alonso still a major part of us moving foward with what we need & want to achieve in the following years. another striker or play maker yes, but not by imho weakening the side in key areas, like for like replacements don't interest me,the likes of skrtel should remain & players of affordable quality brought in to strengthen the squad not compramise it. what would selling the likes of skytel for say 8 million do, nothing - he was an excellant purchase & i really rate him.

he is a classic example of money well spent, that has added quality, competition for places in the first team. we need to sign more players like him that show desire to play for us,fight for their place etc not sell players like him.

i do agree that some players need to be sold so we can keep on improving the squad, but for me money isn't everything! most of

the players raffa has kept faith with have re-payed him with their attitude & commitment. but i'm affraid imho just aren't good enough, skrtel certainly doesn't come into that catagory for me, as i strongly think that we only need 2 players added to our squad not major wholesale changes, the spine of the side is their, hopefully only a couple of signings will be needed to complete our holy gail.

Sami didn't have to play and when he did there was a reason. He made 15 Premiership appearances, 3 as sub. 7 of those 12 Premiership starts were when Arbeloa didn't play, had we had a fit Degen and proper RB cover then he would have maybe made five starts. That's a big dent out of your 18, take off two more that he played in the League Cup when we fielded weakened teams and you'll find a RB signing would negate the need for any back-up CB to play that often.

As I said, I don't think we need an expensive CB signing, I'd prefer a young player over Distin who is near 32 and must surely want to play more often than 4th choice CB at his age? Be better off moving to Wolves IMHO

i see what you mean but it's alll ifs , buts and maybes, owzat - facts are, sami was required for about a 1/4 to a 1/3 of our games last season , so we probably need a replacement

whetehr that's distin at 2m or a young cb (who will prob be more expensive if we're talking about someone decent and will be ready to play in the first team), we'll wait and see
