look how excited south africa is at getting it, how excitsed would english people be if they got it? I don't think americans wiill be jumping for joy at the idea of SOCCER coming.

Mexican-Americans are the only ones interested in 'soccer'?  It's one of the most multicultural nations on earth, mate.  Loads of immigrants from around the world live in the US.  As footy's the world's most popular sport it stands to reason that loads of Americans follow the game.  The problem is that MLS footy is way below the standard of the European leagues and so draws less attention than it otherwise might, giving the impression that Americans don't care about footy.  How many, though, do what Joe or Supits or the Good Yank do and follow religiously via telly and the internet?  Surely a lot more than you think.

any time European teams come over  they easily sell out our biggest stadiums.  I would say that the biggest problem with American fans is that we demand the best or else we aren't interested.  Since the World Cup is the best, we would be very much interested.  Would there be some people who just simply could care less? yes, and probably at a higher percentage than in most countries, but we have so many people that would be excited that it would be hard to tell.

I also don't see why its so important for the host country to be so into the event. 90% of the countries in the world cup are not the host country.  I think the US would do a great job at providing safety, as well as offering home away from home settings for people from almost every country.

There were only 52 matches played in the 1994 World Cup, and the three since then have had 64, yet the 1994 World Cup STILL ranks as the highest in total attendance.  The average crowd was 69,000 and we didn't even use all of our biggest stadiums. the average percentage of capacity was 96%.  We didn't even use all our biggest stadiums, which I hope we would for the next time.  At the time of the last world cup that we hosted, we hadn't even had a domestic league for nearly 20 years, by the time 2022 comes around our league will be 26 years old

Having been in the States for 20+ years, I have a good amount of experience here with the Yanks

The country seems to be so big that several sports seem to be the favorite of a large portion of the land.

Most here like the NFL, MANY here love their University American Football, and the NBA/MLB crowds have their fanatics

The MLS seems so far from those sports that it isn't even close. I have spent time in several cities with teams and don't see real spirit outside of a select few.

In terms of the EPL, I find that it is in fact growing. United, Chelsea, and us seem to be really making a BIGGER PUSH towards the US in terms of marketing and it is working. Friends see games on ESPN/Fox and want to watch more.

But, I still think the like for American Soccer is considerably less than any other sport and the fact that it is growing is MORE because of how incredibly LOW the support was at first....rather than an actual growth

I think the world cup is bigger than the olympics and the host country should be ecstatic about hosting.

I appreciate america has the best stadiums in the world and attendances would be high but a huge percentage would have no interest in it.

Most countries have football as the number 1 sport, or at the very least up there near the top. Look at brazil when they host it - the locals will be nuts.

This was the opportunity and expertise we prayed we were going to get when G&H bought us so how can they do it for one club and not another.

Build us the same stadium just leave out the aircon. Job done !!

Joe do you know any numbers, revenue, profits - I'd really like to see how our club compares.

Fascinating Joe, thanks for the posts. Undoubtedly the yanks are excellent at promoting and marketing their game.

But since G&H took over we havent seen 'any' evidence of an new initiatives, new sponsership, new approaches to raising money.
Technically what have they brought us? I'd love to see us get the original 70,000 seater stadium design and be more professional in financing it and evolving a new business plan and style to football to ensure LFC has a clean run for the next 20 years.

Thats the expertise I hoped G&H would bring and seemingly... they havent.

they both own hockey teams, and that league as a whole is not doing so great financially. The owners had a lockout that ended up lasting for more than an entire season. It got to the point where the owners loss less money by just not playing at all.  As soon as Hicks bought the Rangers he splashed the cash like never before signing Alex Rodriguez to the biggest contract in sports history, over $200million in wages over the length of the deal. Ended up biting him in the :censored: because he couldn't afford to bring anybody else in and the team was terrible despite Rodriguez playing at the highest level and being named player of the year on a losing team (very hard to do).

So I think it was more a matter of we didn't get the right American owners.

Also, what really helps NFL franchises earn so much money is that it seems as if the rules were designed with television in mind. There is a break after every play to show replays, and after every change of possession there is time for another small break to show some advertisements, and then because it is split into 4 quarters  instead of 2 halves, there is even more time for commercial interruption.  This is how a sports league that is really only popular in one country can have its teams worth more than the premiership that is seen by many many more eyeballs from all over the globe over the course of a year.

You would think that some of the best brains must have tried to resolve that problem - clearly they failed.
Either G&H get their act together and raise funds for the new stadium (naming rights, box rental, season ticket revenue, local authority soft loans, preseason tour forward sales etc..) or they need to float off 50%.

I remember David Bowie selling the forward income off his record rights to raise cash, I wonder if LFC could issue a bond or something to raise cash.

It baffles me they cant come up with better ideas than me.
