And now for something completely similar - Most disapointing player of the season

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby Owzat » Mon May 11, 2009 2:53 pm

I think most if not all of us have voted and/or named our player of the season, but what about disappointment of the season. This is a tricky one, it can be someone you have high expectations of and has done well but could do better, or someone who you expected to improve on last season but has stayed at the same level or remained equally disappointing or inconsistent.

So a few possible examples, not intended to upset anyone over their favourites, but potential perspectives.

MASCHERANO - still young, but has he improved in areas such as passing, shooting etc as he could have

BABEL - young, not getting many starting opportunities, but seemed to be a lot better as sub last season than this.

SKRTEL - hitting the kind of age where he should be settling in at CB and putting in solid performances, but has he disappointed this season?

ARBELOA - been a bit disappointing this season, to such an extent I think a lot of LFC fans are looking at a new RB and who would have thought that last season?

CARRAGHER - is he 0.0135 m/s slower than three seasons ago? :D Did he mistime three more tackles against West Ham this season then three seasons ago? :D Is he scoring too many OGs and completely missing kicks at the ball he shouldn't? Is his last ditch tackling to save us no longer in his locker? (or is it in his locker, but in the dressing room and not out on the pitch?) Does he need bigger pockets to keep opposing strikers in?

I guess you could do this thus :

MASCHERANO*

08/09 : disappointing, room for improvement
good enough : tackling, mobility.............
not good enough : passing, shooting...........

*not picking on Mascherano, just perhaps easier to work with given his role

Babel - Hands down for me - Has all the talent and ability in the world to be a cracking player - pace power great shot just cant produce it and this was the season for him to step up and he hasnt done. No one else has dissappointed me at all this season .

i bet Babel gets almost every vote down here...
Not trying to defend him or anything.. he'd probably get my vote aswell but comeon.. hes only started 5 or 6 league games this season and around 2 in europe or something... scored what ? around 5 or so ? He hasnt been getting as much a chance and clearly the manager doesnt rate him much.... perhaps he should be left out of this poll because hes just too easy a pick for my liking....

Id go for Skrtel, Dossena, Lucas, Mascherano, in that order...

Clearly that's a follow-on to your comments in the Carragher thread.  Well done, it's a good attempt at humour anyway mate, breaks the monotony of your usual posting style.  You might want to re-check your stats though, because if Carra's only slowed down by 0.0135m/s in three years then I'm as much a dildo salesman as Bigmick is.  That said, he doesn't deserve to be in that list, nowhere near it.

Arbeloa shouldn't be on it either, he's a decent player and has had his best in a red shirt in terms of consistency, so quite how that can be classed as a disappointment I'm not quite sure.  Is there room for improvement in that position?  Certainly, but surely the biggest disappointment of the season will be someone who hasn't performed as they're capable of or hasn't improved as anticipated.  Given that Arbeloa's never been a regular right back until this season (therefore we don't really have a decent season to compare this one to) and can hardly have been expected to improve dramatically at the age of 26 or so, I don't see how people can be disappointed.

Surely the biggest disappointment of the season is our 20 million quid striker who has already been sent packing back to Spurs at a financial loss after a less than convincing half season in a red shirt.  Yet he doesn't make the list?  Strange.

Good point there John about Keane didnt even think of him as he wasnt even a liverpool player that long but to me he wasnt that much of a big disappointment cause i didnt really rate him that much in the first place and could never see what he would bring to us and how he would improve us . and Ace i think babel firmly deserves his place on the list - the others you mentioned have all contributed a hell of a lot more to our success this season even dossena with his cameo appearances when he was scoring . Babel hasnt deserved to start more due to his lack of thinking and game intelligence when he has either come on or has started.

For Babel at Liverpool read Tevez at United.

Both had relatively decent seasons last time out. This season both have had limited starts and have been on the bench a lot. Consequently, the form of both players has suffered.

Think tevez is a big step up from Babel in terms of ability and mental level - Tevez when he has played for the mancs has produced for them on a number of occasions

Whats the point in the moaning and patronising and then choosing that very player?

Robbie Keane and Ryan Babel are the two that have disappointed me the most. Keane probably wasn't mentioned in the thread because he was simply forgotten which further highlights the impact he had at Liverpool.

Would have to agree.  There's no comparison there as far as I'm concerned.

Tevez takes his chances when he gets them.  4 goals in Carling cup game after he'd been out, goal against Porto after he's been out, goal yesterday after being out.  Babel gets the odd goal here and there, but they're never significant ones (not this season anyway), unlike Tevez.  Tevez has also proven his worth in the Premiership by keeping West Ham up almost single handedly.  Much better player.

Babel definetly the most dissapointing.

The thing that annoys me the most about him is that he is :censored: at passing.. even when its a really simple little 5 yard pass he somehow messes it up.

Keane would be the most obvious choice but otherwise it's Babel by a country mile for me.  A philosophical question for the few remaining Babelians out there: is Babel muck because he doesn't play or doesn't play because he's muck? ???  No prizes for guessing my view.

Can't see anything wrong in aCe's post tbh. Majority on here are going to choose him anyway.
