Stopping smoking - Mmmnnn!

Good thread, mate...
I have to give 'em up. I've two kids and I really (well, it's bleedin' obvious !) wanna watch them grow up. I've been smoking way too much for way too long, have a horrible smoker's cough, and if I have to run 20 yards to catch a train, I'm in a jock.
So, I was at the GP a while back, and asked her for a prescription for Champix. Apparaently it blocks receptors in the brain blah blah blah so the fags do nothing for you, you don't get the "hit" off them.
BUT, I was telling my aunt the other night, and she tells me her sister and a workmate took the same ones and now have more chins than a Chinese phone book !
Choice is then : do I take them and start to look like Frank Lampard, or not ? The other thing is they can apparently put you on a downer unless you're a freakin' eternal optimist.

Hmmmmm......decisions, decisions...

(The other stupid thing is a mate of mine is on his way back from abroad with ca. 600 duty free fags tomorrow. Daft, I know.....)

i've given up loads of times. 2 years twice, a year a couple of times and god knows how many times for a few months or weeks. i always end up having one again though, and its nearly always sitting having a beer and the person i'm with lights one up. i gave up again this year at new year and lasted til the beginning of february.

i think i'm going to wait til the end of the footy season (i can't bear to watch us without smoking) then start running a bit on the beach in the summer, try and go for the get fit thing, and jack em in again. to be honest though, each of the times i went for 2 years were after i'd been i'll and couldn't face one for a few days - gives you a head start.

good luck to ya, baz. hope your will power is stronger than mine.

stick with it baz mate, you'll do it if you want it bad enough (keep thinking about the paralysed old dear in the hospital)

i smoked 20 a day from age approx 16 to age 29 and gave up in april 2000. the first few weeks was the hardest but the nicorette etc helped big time. at least the pubs are n/s now - was murder having a few pints and everybody smoking around me.

daft c**t that i am i let myself back into the habit of smoking when i was on holiday, on a big night out etc a couple of summers ago, particularly for the last 12 months as my life's been pretty up & down to say the least in that time. anyway i went a few months in that time where i'd only smoke at night, or weirdly enough only during the day at work. right now i'm on my 9th day of no cigs and d'you know what? it's a piece of p**s compared to when i first did it.

i've been doing what i did first time round - putting the price of a packet of cigs a day in a jar and watching the money pile up - up to about £50 already - certainly concentrates the mind

keep going mate, it's well worth it

The reason I stopped smoking is because my 2 yr old would come around each time I lit up. It wasn't fair to her soft lungs. I made the decision and I stop rite there and than, on a six pence :p . I still have a half pack from 5 yrs ago in the cupboard.

A few tips a think could help alot is
1. To stop buying ciggies.
2. To not mix with smokers. (for 2 yrs at least, cause that is about the time it will flush out of your system )

Yeah stopping buying a packet is a good idea Mulder...My God,why did I not think of that? :D
I've been "out" 3 times since and its so much easier now.You used to be able to smoke at a table in a cafe,or pub.Now its a no no.

You have the time to say NO to yourself before you actually get up and walk out to smoke!so much easier than someone offereing you a smoke over a table!

Its all down to how much ya wanna live...think about an iron lung and not being able to breath at 55...phew!!Feck that!

Im actual proper dying for one now..but I'll be fuc'king shagged sideways by Barrymore and Mercury together before I take a chance on a smoke!

I'll probably be found dead in a Pool with implement damage now..C'est la vie!

My step dad went to see a hypnotist about 25 years ago to stop smoking, he was on about 30 to 40 a day, also some of his colleagues went with him.he never smoked again, in fact he kept one ciggy in the cabinet in case he wanted on and it is still there. a couple of his colleagues tried to smoke a day later and vomited when they inhaled.

I have never been a smoker and I think the smell on people who have nipped outside for a smoke and then returned to the office is fecking horrible. that said I like a cigar when drinking, and since i only drink maybe twice or three times a year then that cigar is infrequent also

I stopped for 2 weeks, then went back on them 10 days ago.

I was only about 10-15 a day - but what does it for me is my nightshifts.
When Im doing nights, and Im fecked about 2am, I NEED a ciggy.
Obviously I dont "need" one, but Im convinced I do.

Ive given up in the past, for about 3-4 months each time.
What did it for me those times was acupuncture.

Im tellin yer, it only took one session and i didnt even want another ciggy.
You have to watch out tho, some acupuncturists have been :censored: and their treatment hasn't worked.
But with 2 Ive seen, the moment I walked out the place I didn't want one.

Good on yer for packin in Baz, but dont think you have it beat as people are back on them even after years without one.

:D  yeah true say.. Just find it hard to completely quit.. Always tend to crave for one time to time. I go to the gym and i thought maybe if il get focused on that i would'nt need one. Then few weeks down the line i started smoking again. Its a bad habit i must say.
