Macharano is another example of a hard man.. Strong tough like a beast and good at football not a brain dead thug like some mentioned on the list.

Where in god's name is this man . This fella was seriously hard . That list is bollox . I'd also have shearer futher up .

The 1965 FA Cup Final

Gerry Byrne will always be remembered for playing for Liverpool in the 1965 FA Cup Final, which took place on the 1 May at Wembley with a broken collarbone. He suffered the injury as early as the third minute, but played on throughout the rest of the game and the whole of extra-time as Liverpool won the Cup for the very first time. The break happened after Byrne was challenged heftily by Leeds United's captain Bobby Collins, but, with substitutes still not permitted by the authorities in 1965, he had little choice but to carry on playing. He and his team-mates, not to mention Shankly and his coaching team on the Liverpool bench, somehow managed to keep the extent of Byrne's injury a secret from the Leeds United players and staff.

Unfortunately for Byrne the game went to extra-time and Gerry, despite the agonising pain, kept making his familiar marauding runs down the left flank in joining the attack. Early on into the first period of extra time, he reached the by-line with the ball and pulled back a perfect cross for Roger Hunt to open the scoring. Leeds got back into the game and equalised through Billy Bremner but Liverpool were not to be denied as Ian St. John headed home the winner late on during the second period and Liverpool had finally won their first ever FA Cup. Shankly spoke highly of Gerry in an interview after the final saying "It was a performance of raw courage from the boy", high praise from a man who appreciated such endeavour.

Joey Jones reckoned Tommy smith was ludicrously hard

When was that taff ?

All i remember is the time when Keane got sent off and went to run after Shearer, who looked like he was sh!tting himself.

Tommy Smith should be in the top 5 without doubt.

Most of the people in that list where just yard dogs who couldnt play.

Sorry to say it but Duncan Ferguson should be no1 by a mile in my books even if he was a blue.

type Keane vs Shearer on youtube...'Big Al's' face says it all  :D

Souness though wouldn't have sorted out Roy keane and Vinnie Jones, because he wouldn't have been able to run fast enough to catch them. That said, I've met Vinnie a few times and although he's a nice lad, he wouldn't be top of my list for fella's I'd like to have a row with. He's bigger than he looks on the telly, and has that steely look that kind of makes you feel he's focusing on the inside back of your head rather than the face. He could be a wee bit of a handful in the wrong circumatances I've no doubt, you'd go there if you had to but it wouldn't be by choice.

:D  :D  You`d have a go would ya mick?

Some of these people who vote obviuosly havnt been watching football very long. Igor gives a perfect example with Gerry Burne, great player an hard as nails, i used to love the tussle with Smithy an Joe Jordan now they were what you call hard men, but they both could play football as well. These modern day supposed to be hard men are  fairies compared to some of the greats, Now i would class Best in that catorgory an all , the amount of kicks an horrible tackles he sufferd week in week out was just plain abuse, but he just carried on playing, if what he went through happened in todays game the player would get done for gbh,

Id have little Archie Gemmell in there an all, cracking little player but nasty, i could go on. Some on that list should be on atop twenty thug list not associated with being footballers

Ha if your talking about hard men

Joe Louis (Liverpool)

The heavyweight champion of the world signed for The Reds while he was stationed near Liverpool during the war. True, he never played a League game – but how much harder can you get than one of the greatest boxers of all time?
