Hopes and aspirations for 2009/10 - My 1000th post !

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby bunglemark2 » Thu Apr 23, 2009 1:18 pm

Right folks...

As it's a milestone in my history (on this forum anyway  :D  ), I decided to mark the occasion by venting some personal wishes and aspirations for the season ahead. Now, I know this season isn't over yet and we are all as one hoping-against-hope that by some strange stroke of fate, the Scum will "gift" us the Premiership....or better still, that in the six games they have left, that our peers will put in a more vicious/skilful/adept display than Pompey last night, and actually earn points againt the Scum....

So, onto reasons for posting this new topic : what I would like for the next campaign....

1. A stadium. How on earth can we expect to compete financially with clubs that can pull in 50%+ more every week than we can ? Let's hope this can be sorted as soon as....and that work commences and flies ahead on a new home.
2. Quality signings in key areas. Purely my own opinion, mind, but I would be looking at quality signings in some or all of the following areas : up front (x 2), right back / left back (x 1 each), and left / right wing (x 1 each).....Well, I did say it was what I would LIKE ?  :D
3. Focus on the Reserves / Youths. Can't remember the last "next one to make it" from the Academy was mentioned, but they certainly don't trip off the tongue. If it ain't working, get it sorted, and pretty damn quick...
4. "Old boys" network. I watch a bit of footie from around Europe and I can't help thinking that at least SOME of the old boys should be tapped, for example, for players we might be interested in having a look at. Think of Babbel in Germany, and others who ply their trade around Europe...
5. Scouts. Not the lads who earn badges at the weekend singing Kum-Bi-Ya, but the ones who "allegedly" scour the planet picking up future first teamers....What degree of success can we see from the past decade or so ? I stand to be corrected but I can't think of more than a couple.
6. The opinion of Rafa as a manager. I've said it often enough here, that I think Rafa did himself and the club quite a lot of damage over the Keane saga. He needs to be very careful about a re-run of that, and also that his "alleged" showboating vs. Allardyce isn't picked up the wrong way again.....
7. Play like we would die for the shirt. In the run up to the Real Madrid game, I watched a number of games from way back when, when the likes of Dalglish, Lawrenson, Thompson, Souness et al did everything and anything to keep possession, or make their presence felt. Personally, I think we've seen too little of this this season. The recent game vs. Arsenal aside, with a bit of the above, there's no way we would have had six home draws this season.

So, there it is, a provisional list which I will add to over the coming months.

Right now though, I've just had me lunch, I'm full up, and I feel like a little snooze....

Happy posting folks

Well, there are ways and means Gybs....
First off, I think there are a couple of avenues open to Rafa to blood the younger players - the Carling Cup, for example; pre-season friendlies as well....see how they get on and the business end of the club.
For the first team, I think it's no surprise that some vacancies can and should be made....perhaps the sale of Degen, Lucas, Dossena, maybe Babel.....already with that, you've got a couple of slots from the first team squad free. But if it DOES mean adding to the squad, then so be it. Look at the strength in depth of our peers....

Ok thats the first question answered - Next one - How can we afford to get these players that are required to be at the standard you need to compete to win the league

ST 1 - 10 mil ?
ST 2 - 5-10 mil ?
LW - 10 mil ?
RW - 10 mil ?
LB ?!? why ? Insua and Aurelio already here plus dossena
RB - 10 mil ?

Plus these older players wont be cheap as well .

Degen ? wont even get a mil for him
Babel - if he left maybe around 5 mil
Lucas - dont think will be leavin but if he did another 5 mil
Dossena - dont think will go but if did another 3-5 mil maybe

So sales will prob get us around 15 mil so we would need a lot more to get the players you want .

Plus there is also the added factor of the total squad overhaul that we seem to do every summer when in fact its we just need maybe 2 additions to the squad - A Ctreative midfielder/forward player plus a right back .

Mate, it's why I think there's sense in using the 'old boys' network. I've watched a lot of German footie this season and I reckon there are some useful players out there. Would do no harm to tap up Babbel or Hamann 'cos I'm sure they're more clued in than any of us or those at the club.
As for strikers, not sure to be honest, but we seem to be able to find the dosh for big signings when we want to, and there's the Champions League money coming in as well.....so all is not doom and gloom.....

what sort of old players are you thinking of then ? What age group ? and what would they bring to us that we havent already and in what positions ?. And where would the young lads fit in then if we have these older guys coming in ?

Where did the "old" players come from ? I'm thinking more in the mid 20's bracket....As for the younger players, I'm not suggesting they be jettisoned en masse; rather, they get the chance to show what they can do, how good they are, IF they can make it.......Mind you, Ablett has had an absolute mare of a season this year with the Reserves so the future looks grim for some of them....
Gimme a day or so - I've been checking thru some of the Bundesliga players in particular but I'm sure there are many, many others further afield. I mean the likes of Skrtel and Vidic come from a little further afield and there can't be just decent defenders over that part of the world...

ok let us know the players and where they play and approx cost and what benefit they will bring - we cant afford to waste money on signings anymore . And wasnt saying jettison the young lads but if your suggesting bringing all these players in when will the young lads play ?

If liverpool doesn´t win a trophy this season the pressure on rafa the next season will be immense.

The pressure on him will be more anyway given he has sole control on transfers now. But I wouldn't say immense. He has just signed a long term contract. Of course everyone wants progress but we should let him get on with things like Wenger has been able to do at Arsenal.

For next season I want a sustained run in Europe and a strong challange in the league. I want more strength in depth in the squad above all else. But that really depends on how much Rafa gets to spend in the summer.
