Former international rugby coach Dick Best is likely to come under fire after making an on-air racial slur directed against England full-back Delon Armitage.

Best was being interviewed by Sky Sports News at Heathrow ahead of today's squad announcement for the British and Irish Lions.

And after his choices for the Lions' first XV were published on-screen, which included Armitage out of position on the wing, Best was asked why he had selected the England man over impressive Ireland winger Tommy Bowe.

"You've always got to have a coloured boy in the team," Best remarked.

Coverage then cut back to a visibly shocked presenter Mike Wedderburn, who is black.

Soon afterwards Wedderburn's co-presenter Millie Clode issued an apology, stating: "[Dick Best] made remarks that he thought were off-camera.

"We would like to apologise for any offence this may have caused."

Best is a well-respected name in rugby circles, having been on the England coaching team under Geoff Cooke as well as a member of the 1993 Lions tour staff in New Zealand.

He has also worked as a journalist, broadcaster and an agent.

I think it was just a joke about how south africa have to have a certain number of black players and it is south africa the lions are playing.

No big deal. I think it would be wrong if people cannot make good natured jokes involving race.

nobody is saying slavery good was good. South AFrica have to have black players in their team, there is a quota for this.

I think that the coach made a joke about the lions having to pick black players as a result.

Do you think what he said makes him a racist?

Germans,British and French often make jokes about each other (e.g. that pub landlord character of Al Murray) and they killed millions of each other a lot more recently that slavery.

I don't like the bernard manning type jokes as they appear a veil of bullying and hatred, however a good natured joke is okay.

John Barnes even said Kenny Dalglish once had drafts on a board to outline a team plan and he had one black one which he put out on the wing but he gave John a smile and wink, i.e. it was a good natured joke.

Seinfield did an episode where he went out with a native american but was so paranoid about his language, he couldn't ask for a "reservation" at a restaurant when she was with him and felt there were negative connotations. He mentioned "indian gifting" (basically regifting) and other things. It was funny.

What happened the native americans is just as bad as slavery, and more recent, so was he wrong to make jokes about it?

Robery Downey Junior was funny as a white man method acting as a black man in tropic thunder - was that racist?

Personally, I would consider what happened to the Native American Indian FAR FAR worse than what happened to African slaves.

In fact I consider it the greatest genocide in history.

I think jibes involving race or culture need to be well considered when your in the public eye though. There is always somebody just waiting around to employ some faux offence and cause a stink and you end up looking like Hitler.
