not pictured; chocolate, bunnies.

I dont believe in Christianity or any other religion for that matter but even I find it pretty low that we live in a world where unscrupulous  people can turn a focal point of a major religion and what to a normal person is a pretty horrific act of murder and turn it into a money spinner.

I will now attempt a dismount from my high, high horse

Yeah I agree a bit, but it's the same with Christmas as well. I bet if you done a survey of a few thoushand children probably only half would be able to tell you about Christ's resurrection ect.. Most will probably say easter eggs or chocolate....

I thought santa gave birth to the easter bunny on christmas day and that the bunny was crucified to save us from  a world without chocolate but on the third he rose from the dead to give us chocolate and that resurrection is celebrated by easter eggs.

I was always told the egg symbolises the stone boulder door of the tomb that the plucky little fella pushed aside to aid escape after his resurection..?

The bunny and the egg is a pagan thing. It's origins are in Celtic mythology. It's to do with the season of Spring, and with it comes the bunnies (or in the original case a hare) and the eggs are symbolic of renewal. So now you know.

i was told when i was a kid that the egg was supposed to represent the boulder that covered the tomb. I am however 80% sure said boulder was not made of chocolate. maybe the catholic church owns large stocks in cadbury?

The concept of the Easter Bunny and the egg has nothing to do with Christianity or the Catholic church whatsoever. It just so happens to coincide with the time of the year and the tie-ins between the two events. It's the same as Santa. He too is a pagan symbol, as well as the tree. Corporates latch on to things like this because like any big time of the year, they need a mascot to represent an event in order to make something marketable to sell. Jesus' death was a gruesome affair. Hardly an image that can be used in shop windows, plus how can you sell that concept to people who don't even believe that the man existed?

Unlike yourself, though, it's good that you at least show some kind of respect even if you don't believe in the event or the religion. The irony is, however, is that this is the exact reason why the bunny and the egg are synonymous with Easter time, so that people like yourself can join in the celebration without the visage of Christ to offend, or at least intrude.

december 25th was also a pagan festival. christianity has always tried to fit in with the existing religions it tries to replace. I saw the excellent "around the world in 80 faiths" and in some parts of south america, the people said they were catholic, but they were sacrificing animals to the virgin mary. the catholic church had to build in the sacrificing religions into the catholic teachings.

they can be pragmatic.

Just cashed in on my chocolate bunnies and they laid a lot of good candy eggs this year.  Gonna go buy some alcohol and prostitutes now.

Happy easter to everyone though.

I learned this year - dont ever get the Easter Eggs in early.
They'll sit there staring at yer, within 2 weeks they'll be eaten.

I would eat any egg whenever I got home from the pub.
