Mr. Benitez has hit out at critics of his investment in Spanish players and claims that he attempted to sign Woodgate recently.

He claimed that when he arrived at the club he told the board that Woodgate was a player he wanted to sign. Both he and the board were put off by the money involved and the injury problem before having a change of heart at the 11th hour and began preparations to make a bid. However Madrid had at this stage become involved and Liverpool missed out.

He also claims that he asked for Moirentes in the Owen deal but Moreintes had promised Madrid coach Comacho he'd stay at Madrid.

He also blames Owen's agent for the former idol's move to Madrid.

in my opinion woodgate is the best centre half in england. ask leeds fans who they rated more highly out of him and ferdinand and i'm sure the majority would say woodgate. the only problem is would it be worth paying the asking price for a player who is only going to guarantee you 20 games a season?

in all fairness to woodgate he's not the sharpest knife in the drawer. did you see his real madrid press conference?

what was even funnier was that he didn't even mention their greatest ever player, di stefano, who was stood DIRECTLY BEHIND HIM!

you could just see di stefano thinking "i'm sure patrik vieira was black"

It's strange that Rafa failed to sign Woodgate, but didn't seem to make much of a bid for any other centre backs. I hoping he's got someone lined up for january.
