How do you figure that Bob?

Alonso in the hole behind Torres as a serious option?  It would never work, mate.  It's far too tight in there and he'd be harried off the ball at every turn.  Alonso is at his best when he collects the ball from the defenders in the centre circle and has time to look up and spot a pass.  He won't be effective playing with his back to goal, as the "in the hole" position demands.  Nor will he have the required mobility to pull out to the flanks to create space and new angles of attack, the way Gerrard does in that role.

Kuyt, for all of his faults, is decent with his back to goal and he has the ability to peel out to wide areas to create space.  As he showed last night with the backheel to Arbeloa and as he showed against the Mancs with his flick to Gerrard, he's also not terrible at picking a pass in tight quarters.  And, for someone who is much maligned for his first touch, I've seen some pretty deft touches from him in the last few weeks (the way he brought the ball down before playing in Arbeloa last night, for instance).

So, in a nutshell, Alonso in the hole would be a serious mistake, IMO, while Kuyt could make it work if needs be.  With all that said, I think Benayoun is the natural and deserved replacement for Gerrard in that position should Stevie be injured so it's a bit of a moot point.

Yepp agree that Benni would be the best option and I can see your point about Xabi, not totally conviced and think it might still be worth a look but I guess you are right.

I dunno mate - I dont buy into the rotation/rest thing.

At this stage of the season they should be up for the big games. I know you're not saying they wont be up for it,
but Im sure they can find the energy.

I mean, it's only 90 minutes every 3/4 days isn't it?

Bollox - I thought this was the Chelsea thread..... I shall resume my boycott.

Hmm yeah we're going to have to give it our all in every single match now though if we want to win them all, constantly pushing for the goal throughout the whole match like we did at fulham, we cant afford to do any sitting back like we have earlier in the season and ended up drawing.

We'll also have to play to our usual champions league best to beat chelsea, followed by more tough CL games, all these games with our full strength team too. Surely its going to put a hell of a strain on them eventually. I hope the squad is fit enough these days to keep up with these demands

I just hope we don't end up with any injuries, imagine Torres or Gerrard going down now, disaster

Saying this though the mancs have even more matches than us and much less confidence and belief than us so lets see how they get on, 8 league losses will do me  :D

I hope I wasn't right when I said this

Was it the tiredness finally getting to the players last night?

No I don't think so. They looked as lively as they have done all season against Fulham despite winning by such a narrow margin. If they are tired we will know when they play Blackburn. Any news on Stevies groin scan yet? Is he ok?

From fantasyfootballscout.co.uk

Torres is a doubt as well as Gerrard.
Liverpool
Next Match: Blackburn (H)
Out: Degen
Doubts: Gerrard, Torres
Banned: None

9/4/09 Benitez will surely be tempted to rotate his side with Tuesday’s Champions League second leg looming. While it’s difficult to predict Rafa’s lineup, the likes of Hyypia, Insua, Mascherano, Babel and Benayoun will surely all be in contention for starting roles.

9/4/09 Gerrard has emerged as a doubt for this one as concerns grew surrounding the possibility that he may have suffered a recurrance of a groin injury sustained earlier in the season. Gerrard was due a scan earlier today. Torres could also be classed as a major doubt following Rafa’s comments that he still lacked fitness following the 3-1 defeat to Chelsea on Wednesday. There’s every chance that both Gerrard and Torres could be rested for this one then.

Predicted Lineup: Reina; Arbeloa, Carragher, Hyypia, Insua; Lucas, Alonso, Benayoun, Babel, Kuyt; Torres.

But Blackburn Have a few out too.

Blackburn Rovers

Next Match: Liverpool (A)
Out: Reid, Emerton, Roberts
Doubts: Santa Cruz, Gamst-Pedersen
Banned: none
8/4/09 Rovers will be without Jason Roberts for 2-3 weeks after he sustained a foot injury against Spurs. With Santa Cruz still a doubt and Derbyshire on loan, Allardyce has real concerns up front. He seems set to turn up at Anfield with a 4-5-1 with McCarthy leading the line and either Dunn or Grella drafted into midfield. Gamst-Pedersen is also a doubt for this one having sustained a calf injury last weekend. Rovers are due to check on him later this week.

Predicted Lineup: Robinson, Ooijer, Samba, Nelsen, Givet; Warnock, Andrews, Dunn, Diouf, Gamst-Pedersen; McCarthy.

We should have enough there in that lineup still to beat Blackburn. Alonso and Yossi will control the game.

2 ? Stevie and who else? You don't mean Aurelio right? :D

Is Agger still injured or is he just not being played whilst he is fussing over his contact?
