Worst defending ive seen from us for a long long time, and zonal marking although works a lot of the time, does have its weaknesses.

Lucas was looking a little more confident in the 1st half but was still rubbish and got much worse as the game whent on. Alonso had an off game too.

Torres didnt have a perticularly bad game because he had a lot to deal with but could have done a little better.

All in all a bad performance, but credit to Hiddink who got the tactics 100% spot on, I bearly even noticed Gerrard.

Although its very likely that we wont beat Chelsea 3 - 0, we have got monster masch back and they will be without Terry.

So lets give our red men all the support they deserve at Stamford Bridge. Win or loose, walk on with hope in your heart

And you'll never walk alone

Spot on. Although you give Lucas too much credit. He was awful and is not good enough to be playing in such an important match. The fact that he was so :censored:, Gerrard had to play deeper just to cover him so Torres was isolated.

Make your mind up. One minute you haven't seen the goals and the other your commenting on individuals performances.

If you didn't see the game - don't comment, simple.

We were poor, the better side won.
But hey, games like this happen to every team sooner or later.
i know every one says the tie is over which it probabley is.
But away Liverpool will go out and throw the kitchen sink at Chelsea. As what difference does it make it we lose 6-0 down at the Bridge, all out attack. We attack from the start - and who knows what will happen

What an awful display, and Rafa did little to change it when he could have made a difference ie half-time and anytime before his usual 65 mins onwards substitutions time. It might be a blessing in disguise, except Rafa thinks (as do some on here) that we can score three at Stamford Bridge and go through. We win rarely enough as it is at Stamford Bridge, usually a narrow victory, so dream on.

Two things to factor in :

1) no side has lost the 1st leg at home leg 1-3 in the Champions League, in fact only ONCE in 25 previous instances has the away side won the 1st leg and not gone through - that was a 0-1 defeat, Ajax then beat Panathanaikos 3-0 in Greece. I think Chelsea are a bit better than not even the best Greek side.

2) the last time we scored 3+ at Stamford Bridge was the last time we won the league (W5-2, 16/12/89)

Write it off Rafa, you were tactically humiliated and that display was embarrassing. Send out a second string at Stamford Bridge, at least that way we can justify any further humiliations by the nature of selections. It won't happen, more's the shame. Maybe we should hope he does see sense and the mancs do go through, Barcelona look the side that's going to win the CL anyway so why worry about it when progress to the semis won't be easy no matter if we can score three at SB (and not concede more than one)

Ciggy - I was going to suggest a Spartacus approach, we all start Blackburn threads and the mods will doubtless close most of them..................except Bermenstein's........................... I wish Judge would get over himself and whack that chip off his shoulder about match threads. Nobody cares who starts match threads as long as it is Bermenstein

Like when I started the Carling Cup match thread, it was a secondary competition.

That was a tough one to swallow, I don't think i've ever felt so confident going into a Champions League game with Chelsea (i'm normally racked with nerves). When we got the early goal I really fancied we could do some serious damage but you have to take your hat off to Chelsea, they were excellent, they did to us what we do to so many other teams away from home in Europe. I'd agree with the notion we didn't know whether to 'stick or twist', we sat back a bit and Chelsea simply took all the initiative, I was desperate to get to half-time 1-0 for a good ten minutes leading up to their goal and unfortunately the entire Anfield crowd seemed to feel the same way. That's the first time i've ever been to Anfield for a big European game and NOT come back completely bursting with pride for our fans, there wasn't the usual passion, furvour and sheer noise of previous fixtures so we didn't really help the lads as we ususally do :( As for individual players last night, the phone-ins on the way home were full of the usual 'blame Lucas' calls but from where I was sitting he had a solid game, was he that bad?

A couple of things stood out for me. 1- It's the first time (since we sold Keane) that we've really been caught out with only having one quality striker on the books. We really could have done with a Crouch (or another target-man) at 60 minutes today, we could have dropped Gerrard into midfield (away from Essien's shadow) and gone two-up-top. 2- As well as Arbeloa and Aurelio have played this season, they both showed their limitations (going forward) yesterday, we will need to upgrade at one of the full-back slots (right-back makes the most sense) over the summer.

It wasn't to be last night but I guess the Champions League final won't be able to ruin my wedding now! 3 points at Blackburn with the mancs dropping points at Sunderland could be just the tonic to wash this result down with though.

Gutted.

I thought we were outplayed last night.

I am not sure why but we did appear tired, not trying to make an excuse its just how it seemed to me.

I cant see any way that we will come back from that to be honest, obviously we dont give up but its extremley unlikely when two sides are so strong that we will go there and win as convincingly as we lost last night.

Just want to say i cant have any complaints from Rafa's team selection as Mash was suspended he selected the team that most would have.

I think we saw the limitations of Skyrtel last night though he was terrible.

If there's anything positive at all to look forward to next week at Stamford Bridge, it's that Terry will be missing. Granted Carvalho is more than capable of slotting in for him, but he's a bit rusty, and a centre-half pairing of him and Alex wouldn't inspire a lot of confidence right now....
As many have alreay said here, some did not perform at all last night, esp. Aurelio, Skrtel and Rieira....but we have to go hell for leather next week on their patch.
Perhaps I'm clutching at straws but I do believe they're not going to be as strong next week, and with Masch back in the centre of the park, we should be able to snuff a bit more out than we did last night...

3-1 did not flatter them. We just weren't at the races and the quick double fire of goals silenced the crowd.

Gerrard on the right for the return leg, Yossi in the middle and Babel on the left. Last night the system didn't work. The only players who got time on the ball was Aurelio, Lucas and Arbeloa.

What annoyed me most is that for the past 4 years they have always been the better team, this year we are the better team imo and that happens ?!?!

Oh well, onwards and upwards.

Long time no see mate, good to see ye back  :)

Think your right as well about us being a better team now and still getting beaten.

Still so much to play for with the league, but that was horrible to watch last night.

BTW that ref has been in charge of us 5 times and we have never won a game when he has reffed us.
There is no-one anywhere in the world at any stage who is any bigger or any better than this football club.
