a penalty wasn't it? Not sure why he was taking them since he doesn't for his club

Not usually no but he has done for us in the past, not just in shootouts but in big games too. One of the derbies he scored both pens.

True, it's just (some) International managers might not pick a player if he's not playing for his club so you'd think you'd logically want a player taking penalties that does so for his club. I think fat frank takes England penalties, I seem to recall someone letting Crouch take one - might have been to complete his hat-trick against Jam-maker - and he missed it didn't he?

Any striker worth his salt should be able to take penalties, but some tend not to be quite so accomplished when the ball is not moving - I wouldn't choose Owen for example, except in shoot-outs. I remember playing football at school once, one kid admitted he was rubbish at football, but when the ball wasn't moving he could kick it no problems - and accurately too. Maybe not your midfield maestro, but I would have picked him to take a spot kick

Two more for Dirky boy, neither from the spot. I see the Slovaks beat the Czechs and POLAND stuffed San Marino 10-0 on the back of their defeat 2-3 to N.Ireland who beat Slovenia 1-0

I honestly prefer Agger over Skrtel, I think he offers a lot more. Wasn't Heskey's "goal" against Slovakia a Skrtel og?

it did look to have clipped him but to give it as an own goal would be harsh i think

yes i like agger to as he does push up the field with the ball at his feet, all i can say is that it's good to have the problem of having two good cen defence ( or 4 if you add carra and hyp ) fighting for the place

only a good thing in my mind

to answer your question:

KUYT AGREES TWO-YEAR EXTENSION

Dirk Kuyt today followed club captain Steven Gerrard in agreeing a two-year contract extension with Liverpool.
The 28-year-old has one year remaining on his current deal but is now set to stay at Anfield until at least 2012.

Benitez told Liverpoolfc.tv: "This is another great piece of news for the club.

"Dirk had one year left on his contract and we were keen for him to stay. He is a player with great quality who has a big part to play in our future. We are delighted to have reached an agreement.

"To have announced new deals for Steven and Dirk on the same day shows how hard everyone is working and that we are moving forward quickly as a club. These are very positive messages and I am very happy."

Kuyt signed from Feyenoord in the summer of 2006.

He arrived as a striker but has since established himself as a right winger with a knack of scoring crucial goals.

Kuyt has bagged 10 goals in 41 appearances so far in 2008-09. Only Jamie Carragher has played more games for Liverpool this term.

i love his work ethic, and can't fault the commitment and team work he puts into every game.

and He scores the odd goal, creates a couple, and will always give his all.

I just feel we can do better for the right hand side of our midfield, if we are going to improve our first 11 to challenge for the title next season

WTF, I'm very happy for Dirk, he gives everything for this club. Yes Maybe I wouldn't play him as much as our current manager and I'd buy someone for the right, but I definitely think he has earned his contract.

It seems that we're seeing new methods in how things are dealt in renewal of contracts and hopefully signing ups.

The new method seems to be:

Manager: I want you to stay.
Player: I want to stay.
Manager: Here, the contract
Player: Where do I have to sign?
Manager: Here.
Player: Ok.
Manager: Ok, Done.

These emperor ways are much easier. :D

What about the present season ?

Four games that we play next in hte LEague EVERYONE of them is before Uniteds - win each time and we will go ahead of them, and top of the table. The pressure on them will be immense.

But, hey lets forget that and slate Dirk Kuyt.

Oh, and dont get me started on that Rafael Benitez fella . . . .

Simolonge, I don't see where Redman in wales is slating Kuyt, but perhaps you meant the stick that the Dutch has received so many times, which I agree it's a disgrace.

This Kuyt's season, as discussed before in this thread, has been IMHO good as a whole. He only had a few bad games I remember, and in the few games he was benched Benayoun did well. I do think that when a team wins the league or is close to it isn't despite players, but thanks to players.

This team is doing well this season and we have progressed, but there's still margin to improve. And there are areas that are more likely to be improved than others, for instance I don't think no-one is thinking of a new goalie or feels the need to change much about or regular starting CMs!

Think its a classic case of picking a small part out of someone's post and taking it out of context.

What Redman in wales said was fine, he praised what he sees of Kuyts quality but said that he feels we could have a better player in that position moving forwards.

Spot on imo.

Thats not to say Dirk doesnt deserve his new contract and a place in the squad, just that he shouldnt always be first choice.

think that is spot on Ace - the guy continuely proves how important a squad member he is and fully deserves his new contract - been one of our players of the season along with the usual suspects.

Well i will be first to admit i have been critical of Kuyt in the past and rightly so i think (only on message boards)

But this season his goals return from mostly the right without taking penalties has been great.
Also the goals he has scored have been vital, late winners against city away and standard liege in the qualifier.
I think i read a stat that all or most of his goals have either been the first in a game or late equalisers or winners.
Thats a great knack to have.

He does still at times slow things down too much with some poor touches and backward passing.

But his value to the team this term has been clearly showed and he has been one of the star performers without doubt.

Cheers Ace (and Sabre)

I was not slating kuyt. far from it. He's a good player.

If we were to improve our starting 11.. the right side of midfield is definately a position I'd look at... and I think most on here would too.
