LIVERPOOL (1) v (0) REAL MADRID- 2nd leg - Back to the champions league

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

I need some translation help

I know you use words like "debacle" (in Spanish debacle)

Or "Catastrophe" (in Spanish Catástrofe)

Or "painful" (in Spanish Doloroso).

But the stick being given to Madrid is going way further than this words and I don't find the english match :D

What's even worse than a debacle and catastrophe in English?
:D

i'd be among the first to say that babel, this season, has been hugely disappointing. but last night for large parts of the game he was electric (or in other words, displayed his fair share of oomph) and ramos just couldn't handle him. how many times did you see him get behind the real defence and look to play balls into the box?

top stuff. i hope he can produce that kind of performance more often.

Sorry but I have to disagree with you on this, he was shying away from challenges as per usual, he made a few nice runs but then he does that quite often anyway. I want to see more effort from the lad and then he'll turn into a proper Liverpool player in my eyes.

You really out doing ya self how any one can have any complaints with babels performance last night is beyound me.

Its was 300% improvement in all areas he looked like a really classy winger last night and had there FBs and CBs sh.iting them selfs.

Some people are never happy , I pitty the fools !

I missed the first 30 mins of the game as I was at training myself but what I did see from the 60 mins I managed to watch great viewing.

We were first to EVERY tackle in midfield and the movement on the wings and upfront was superb (how many times did we get behind their defence in wide positions??). Taking nothing away from what was a fantastic result and performance but Real Madrid are p*sh! They can't defend to save themselves and are very light in MF.

I hope this great win hasn't come at a cost...Stevie G was quoted afterwards as saying there were a "few" knocks to contend with

Roll on the draw. Villareal please :) ???

Thought Babel played really well last night, even though he still looks as if he's playing with somebody elses legs half the time.

ANALYSIS-Soccer-Thrashing of Real exposes Liverpool conundrum
Wed Mar 11, 2009 12:31pm GMT

By Martyn Herman

LIVERPOOL, England, March 11 (Reuters) - Liverpool's victory over Real Madrid on Tuesday will go down as one of the club's greatest European performances but while the fans celebrated many of them will also be a little puzzled.

Rafael Benitez's side were electrifying at Anfield as they crushed the Spanish giants 4-0 by suffocating the life out of them with high-tempo attacking football from the first whistle to the last. They could have scored 10.

Now think back to the 0-0 home draws with Stoke City and Fulham, the 2-2 with Hull City and the abysmal 2-0 defeat at Middlesbrough last month that all but raised the white flag of surrender as far as the Premier League title race is concerned.

Those listless performances will not be forgotten by Liverpool supporters desperate for the club to end the long wait for a domestic league title which stretches back to 1990.

Defeat at leaders Manchester United in the early kickoff on Saturday would snuff out any lingering hopes the Merseysiders have of snatching the crown back this season.

TWO LIVERPOOLS

Quite clearly there are two Liverpools

There is the one that beat United 2-1 at Anfield and won 1-0 at Chelsea in the league, snatched victory at the Bernabeu and humiliated Real Madrid on Tuesday.

Then there is the one so easily bogged down in the trenches with the Premier League's mediocre sides, of which there are many this season.

Manchester United, seven points clear in the Premier League after an 11-match winning run, adapt easily to the differing demands of chiselling out league wins and turning on the style in Europe while rotating their squad.

Benitez has clearly still not mastered the first part of that conundrum.

Captain Steven Gerrard was phenomenal on Tuesday. Free of the shackles that sometimes leave him subdued, he drove at the heart of Real's defence with an energy and enthusiasm that proved infectious to his team mates.

Striker Fernando Torres, who bagged his first Champions League goal this season to send Liverpool towards victory, was a constant menace while behind them Javier Mascherano and Xabi Alonso provided a rock-solid midfield base.

The key, however, was the pace at which Liverpool began the game. "We stayed on top of them from the start," Benitez told reporters. "We had a lot of confidence and approached it in the right way. The atmosphere was very, very positive."

TACTICAL BENITEZ

Benitez is not an arm waver on the touchlines. He rarely displays his emotions, even when the goals are flying in as they were on Tuesday.

Instead, he relishes the tactics of football, setting up a side for a specific purpose as is often the case in big one-off European clashes.

The problem is that when the intoxicating atmosphere of Anfield on a Champions League night or playing one of England's big four in the Premier League is taken away Liverpool can quickly become becalmed, unsure of whether to play from instinct or stick rigidly to their pre-match instructions.

What has also become apparent is that when Benitez puts his strongest side on the pitch they are a match for anybody.

However, his love of tweaking and rotating merely exposes the fact that the squad he has assembled still lacks the quality of Manchester United or Chelsea.

If Torres and Gerrard stay fit the dynamic, silky, fast-paced Liverpool witnessed on Tuesday may well go on and win the Champions League again this season.

Unless something quite extraordinary happens, though, the hesitant, cagey and often passion-less version of Liverpool seen so often in the last few months will once again leave the Premier League dreams of the club's fans in tatters.

Maybe it's a Norwegian commentator and Liverpool crowd thing then because I distinctly heard a few groans from the crowd when babel wasn't quite pulling his weight and the commentators picked up on it.

Look I don't want to derail the celebrations and good feelings on this thread so lets just agree to disagree, FWIW I think Babel played a lot better than usual but still not the same amount of effort as the other players, that's all I'm saying, there is room for improvement and there is a hell of a good player in babel if he just applies himself a bit more.

Overall though i am very very very very very very very HAPPY with the result, and I want it noted that I praised Rafa for getting it absolutely spot on with tactics, team selection and substitutions so stop having a go at me just for the sake of it dammit!  :D
