Same with Rafa, if you believe he is still definately the right man for the job, you accept he has made mistakes but brush them aside, if you are having doubts, it just confirms you were right to doubt him.

Do you know what Saint i couldnt agree more on what you have just said. As you know i have faith in the manager because i believe in my heart he is doing what is best for Liverpool football club. I  said ages ago in another thread we have a fan on the inside in Rafa, i seriously believe that. It was the samei suppose when Xabi wasnt playing well my faith in his abilities  never waverd, i knew he would come good again it was just a matter of believing in him. Because them god given talents that he has, could of been our loss. An before anyone says Rafa wanted to sell him for Barry. We dont know the full story there either. But i still believe the owners were behind trying to raise as much money as they could. But it didnt work out

Its correct though when you say you either believe in our manager or you dont. an thats all it boils down to.

Oh so now Rafa didnt want to sell Alonso, and possibly the Yanks wanted Keane out. To make a quick buck.

Nanny Rafa cant do any wrong in your eyes can  he, I meanyou seem to have an excuse for everything Rafa does wrong.

Blind faith makes me cringe sometimes it really does.

Bam i said we dont know the full story same with the Keane situation, An at the mo the Agger situation why hasnt he been given a new contract yet, We just dont know. I remember the Gerrard situation i thought id never forgive him for wanting to leave us an go to them others but when i read his book Bam i got a different insight into it, Parry being the main factor, Thats all im trying to say. We just dont know, we all believe what we want to believe on a personal level,

Im not excusing him at all, Its just that im not round the dinner table with Rafa listening to whats going on, But maybe your right i do have blind faith in him, But thats just how i feel

Nanny, the way I see it, and this is one of the things that annoys me the most with Rafa, is that whenever he wants some glory or fans to feel sorry for him he has no problem leaking news out to the media via one of his cronies who now seems to include Xabi Alonso for some bizare reason. For that reason I am inclined to think that he did screw up the Keane sale, if he had wanted to buy a replacement but got screwed over by the numpties then he would have made it known, also if he was being pressured into selling Xabi against his will he would have made that known.
I find it touching but a bit naive that some of you think Rafa has anybody but himself as top priority when most evidence points to him using every trick in the book to gain an advantage for himself by dragging the good name of the club through the mud which is the english tabloid press at every given opportunity. In many ways I actually think Houllier was more of a Liverpool manager in the traditional role than Rafa will ever be.
Why for instance do you guys think that he focusses more on the Champions League rather than the premiership, (this season perhaps excepted) when he knows that the prem is more important to us fans. The reason is that personally he doesn't really give two sh1ts about the prem, it is far more important for him to make himself look good for potential Italian and Spanish clubs.

Maybe I'm being harsh but I just don't get this view that Rafa is Mr.Liverpool.

I personally think that's way too harsh.  I've no doubts Rafa cares about the club and the supporters and isn't trying to cynically get one over on them at every turn.  I do agree that he's not above using the press to manipulate situations when things get awkward with Parry or the owners but I'm not having this idea that he "doesn't give a sh!t" about the league and that all of his focus is on the Champions League in order to pimp himself out to continental clubs.  People like you always bang on about "happy clappers" completely ignoring Rafa's faults but it cuts both ways, mate.  Even Rafa's harshest critics should be able to acknowledge that he has done some incredible work for the club and that he genuinely cares, I should think.

managers qualities...mmmmm

rafa - quality and mentality (ie rotate etc)

redknapp - run around a bit

adams - erm dunno.... pass the ball perhaps

ferguson - approach the ref, fall down, get penalities, appeal timing. play until we win way past 90 mins

any chelsea manager - attack ref at all decisions

I care about the club, would that make me the right manager?

I'm sure there's a bit more to the Champions League vs Premiership than simply wanting to win one more than the other or not giving a sheet about one or t'other. There's big money in the Champions League, Rafa finds it a lot easier and success is something that will keep him his job. The league takes a lot to win and it's not looking for us this season, even if Rafa deliberately threw the qualifiers we'd end up in the UEFA Cup, we could end up in the UEFA Cup if finishing third in the groups and we'd hardly set out not to qualify for it at all.

Personally I just think the Champions League suits his tactics and managerial style better, maybe he prefers it for that reason. If you're better at pool than snooker, which are you going to play more? The key difference between the Champions League and Premiership is you can win the Champions League by being difficult to beat, that doesn't quite work in the Premiership where you need to win more than draw. Wasn't there an article some time back where someone made that very point, showing how we'd be Premiership champions if the league were decided on a two-legged, Champions League style system? Just for fun I will compare Liverpool 07/08 with Man Utd 07/08 on a two-legged system.

Overall loss* = 0 points
Overall draw = 2 points
Overall win* = 6 points

*includes away goals

LIVERPOOL 07/08 (home & away, Liverpool score first)

Draw vs Arsenal : 1-1 & 1-1
Win vs Aston Villa : 2-2 & 2-1
Win vs Birmingham : 0-0 & 2-2
Win vs Blackburn : 3-1 & 0-0
Win vs Bolton : 4-0 & 3-1
Loss vs Chelsea : 1-1 & 0-0
Win vs Derby : 6-0 & 2-1
Win vs Everton : 1-0 & 2-1
Win vs Fulham : 2-0 & 2-0
Win vs Man City : 1-0 & 0-0
Loss vs Man Utd : 0-1 & 0-3
Win vs Middlesborough : 3-2 & 1-1
Win vs Newcastle : 3-0 & 3-0
Win vs Portsmouth : 4-1 & 0-0
Loss vs Reading : 2-1 & 1-3
Win vs Sunderland : 3-0 & 2-0
Win vs Tottenham : 2-2 & 2-0
Win vs West Ham : 4-0 & 0-1
Win vs Wigan : 1-1 & 1-0

P19 W15 D1 L3 PTS 92

MAN UTD 07/08 (home & away, Man Utd score first)

Win vs Arsenal : 2-1 & 2-2
Win vs Aston Villa : 4-0 & 4-1
Win vs Birmingham : 1-0 & 1-0
Win vs Blackburn : 2-0 & 1-1
Win vs Bolton : 2-0 & 0-1
Win vs Chelsea : 2-0 & 1-2
Win vs Derby : 4-1 & 1-0
Win vs Everton : 2-1 & 1-0
Win vs Fulham : 2-0 & 3-0
Win vs Liverpool : 3-0 & 1-0
Loss vs Man City : 1-2 & 0-1
Win vs Middlesboro : 4-1 & 2-2
Win vs Newcastle : 6-0 & 5-1
Win vs Portsmouth : 2-0 & 1-1
Win vs Reading : 0-0 & 2-0
Win vs Sunderland : 1-0 & 4-0
Win vs Tottenham : 1-0 & 1-1
Win vs West Ham : 4-1 & 1-2
Win vs Wigan : 4-0 & 2-0

P19 W18 D0 L1 PTS 110

So Rafa is a lot better on aggregate wins, not so hot on actual game by game winning, but either way would still finish behind fergie and the mancs. This season we've played six teams twice, beaten Bolton, Portsmouth, Chelsea, Wigan and Everton on aggregate while drawing with Stoke. Trouble is those pesky draws may cost us again.

I'd agree that Rafa's style helps him excel in the knockout format of the CL but I don't think that's a stick we should use to beat him with (since when is excelling in the Champions League a bad thing?) and I certainly don't think it means he doesn't "give two sh!ts" about the league.  Just trying to provide a little balance here, lest all we hear are the extreme positions on either side of the Rafa debate.
