Spirit of shankly . comittee elections - Candidates and there maifesto statements

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby Igor Zidane » Mon Feb 09, 2009 10:04 pm

Here are the 19 candidates putting themselves forward for the 15 places on the SPIRIT OF SHANKLY COMITTEE .

I've put it up for the members of this forum who are also members of SOS like myself . You should have had your ballott papers through by now ,so this might help you and give you an idea of who to vote for .

Nicky Allt
I am Nicky Allt one of the founder members of the union, and my manifesto has always been that young people should run and drive this union into the future.
They are the future of Liverpool Football Club, and are often not tied up with family or business. The life and soul of Liverpool Football Club remains on its own doorstep and the young people are the soul and need a strong clear voice.
I would like to remain on the committee in whatever capacity the other members see fit.
Thank you.
Nicky Allt

Samantha Armstrong
I am standing for election to the committee for several reasons. Firstly, as a female supporter I want to ensure that all areas of our support are represented by the Liverpool Supporters' Union.
Secondly I have been going to the match since I was a kid, but from the age of 18 I became and 'out of towner' when I lived in London for 10 years. I feel I have an understanding of the issues affecting not only our local support, but also those further afield.
I have been an acting member of the SOS committee for the past 10 months and feel I have made a valuable contribution. As Head of Marketing at a local university I have been able to draw on more than 20 years experience of planning and executing marketing and publicity campaigns, ensuring that the SOS has developed high quality marketing and publicity materials including a newsletter and event material.
Finally, as a single mum with kids who love going to the match, I fully appreciate the barriers that cost and access to tickets are increasingly having on our younger supporters and I'm committed to doing something about this.
Thanks
Sam

John E Burns
Want to help the supporters (Liverpool fan base) from the UK & around the world to add more joining in to get these yanks out of our club for good. We need to work with Liverpool FC with new owners trying to lower ticket sales & season tickets lower. We want the fans from UK & world to the opportunity.

Peter Carney
FLEE FORTHWITH FOSTER & FRIENDS FOR THINE FETID FINANCES HATH FLOUNDERED.
This flag of mine shows my affection for the crank yanks and is worth your vote in this election.
Besides being brilliant at banners I also have the skills knowledge understanding & experience needed to represent Liverpool Supporters on the Union Management Committee. In particular my awareness of agencies & issues locally make me ideal for the role of Community Relations Officer.
It is a privilege to represent Reds. Please afford me that accolade by voting for me in this election.
Ta Las & Lasses.
Peter

Kieth Culvin
My name is Kieth Culvin.
Most of the union members will not know me but i have been involved with the union from the start. When this union was first started it was in reaction to how the club was being run by Hicks, Gillett, Moores and Parry. We are still seeking to rid the club of them.
But as the union has evolved we have try to represent the fans and raise fans issues with the club. Being a member of the guiding committee myself and Stephen Monaghan took on organising events to raise the profile of the Union. We have put on a sportsman's evening with Joey Jones at the Liverpool supporters club which was a great night. We have also organised a fund raising event for Michael Shields, over 300 reds turned up for a fantastic night. We also organised a bucket collection for Michael at Anfield.
I have been put forward to head a group to organise the travel to away games. I have only done this for the last three games but feel I have done a decent job. I feel I bring good organisational skills to the union

Paul Gardner
I joined SOS to have a voice, a place to be heard and to be part of a union that represented me. As a young fan, I want to recreate the traditions of the club that my Dad taught me, but still allow us to succeed in the modern environment. We need to reclaim the values of our club now, whilst enabling that these are protected to allow my children, grand children and continuing generations to be brought up to follow in the values I was raised in to.
I will strive to create equality for all members, whilst enabling focus to common goals to take the union and the club forward. Every opportunity is always taken enthusiastically with the ability to remain calm and maintain clear judgement in times of great pressure.
Every action, every possible solution will be explored and considered when maintaining the aims set out by SOS. Passion, Commitment and Drive are evident throughout any roles I undertake with a determination to succeed. Actively participating and making a difference in what I care about is a life choice and one I intend to continue with.

Jon-Paul Hill
A fan since childhood and current Kop season ticket holder, I have been Acting Treasurer of the Union since its inauguration. I am a BSc Actuarial Science graduate and currently employed by an investment management company in Liverpool.
It has been a challenging but rewarding task overseeing the Union's finances and I am delighted that during this time the Union has grown into a healthy financial position. Providing members with low cost transport to away matches and hosting well received events is testament to this position. Furthermore, being able to aid and support the Michael Shields Campaign, including generating support on the pitch, demonstrates the strengths of this growing Union and I am proud to be in this situation where we can make a real difference.
Moving onwards, it is vital the Union remains in a strong financial position, not only ensuring the best possible service and support for all its members, but also offering support to the local community. The continued generation of income coupled with sound decision making and use of funds is paramount and I believe my experience and knowledge within finance can help the Union achieve this.

Peter Hooton
I'm a lifelong Liverpool supporter and have been going to the match home and away since the 1970's. I helped set up the mass meeting at the Sandon in January 2008 which resulted in the formation of Spirit of Shankly. My experience over the years with 'The End' magazine and The Farm would benefit the Union especially when dealing with the media. For many years I have felt that we needed a strong 'independent' supporters group to act as a pressure group for the benefit all Liverpool fans. I believe the SOS has the potential to become this!

Thomas Keiner .    I am standing for election as the OVERSEAS LIASON OFFICER and will bring the following qualities and experience to the Union. Although I am a resident of the city of Liverpool, I am actually a German national by birth and before moving to Liverpool in 2004 have regularly travelled over to my beloved city for over 20 years.
During my time in Germany, I have been involved with the local Fan Projet on a voluntary basis for many years and also got elected as one of 2 Official Fan Representatives for my local club Hannover 96 for 5 seasons, which position I gave up prior to my move to the UK. I have been involved in similar work the union is involved in for more than 10 years.
In addition to this, I have taken an interest in European and worldwide fan-culture as long as I can think and have connections to similar organisations like the union in Germany. I follow Liverpool in Europe on a regular basis and know Liverpool from all over the globe, which I feel is important for this role.

John Mackin
I've been a Liverpool season ticket holder since 1974 and follow Liverpool home and away on a regular basis. I formed the 'No Kop Seats' campaign in 1992 and campaigned for several years against the compulsory introduction of all-seater stadia.
I have, since August 2008, acted as Club Liaison officer. S.O.S. had experienced great difficultly engaging with the club prior to my taking this role. Using some of the contacts I had made over the years I was able to open up a dialogue with Liverpool FC, and we have a working relationship that has enabled the Union to deliver results. It's my job to make sure the Union stays in contact with club as best we can: being a central point of contact for the club on Union matters, and contacting and liaising with the club to further our aims as set out in our constitution.
Since my taking on the role the Union has held regular meetings with the Ticket Office, the Stadium manager, The Club Secretary and the Chief Executive in order to further our aims. The relationship has also enabled us to meet with the owners when we set out our opposition to their tenure.

James McKenna
Seeing two strangers come into your club, promising the earth and delivering nothing, can leave you feeling angry and upset. And it has done. But for the past year, us fans have been able to harness that anger and upset. To turn it into passion for our club, and to vent our frustrations at those who have gotten us into the present situation. We have stood together as fans, and rather than sit in the pub or moan in the ground, we have marched, and protested against what has happened to our club. We have formed the very first football supporters union. All because we refused to sit back and continue to allow things to get worse. This is why I am standing for election. Fans have been given a voice by the Union, an opportunity to say enough is enough.
For the past year I have been part of the committee, and we have come far. We have to continue this, it won't be easy and things won't be handed to us on a plate. But I don't expect that. I want us to fight for what us fans want, and I want to make sure they hear us.

Stephen Monaghan
One year ago, Liverpool Football Club was about to go in turmoil. The two American owners were about to put a huge debt, on this great club of ours. They promised us that would never happen, they would respect tradition. So last January 400 like minded Liverpool fans met in the Sandon, once the home of Liverpool FC. This is were the Spirit of Shankly was born, the Liverpool Supporters Union, the first ever union for football fans. Since then I have been an active committee member.
Myself and Kieth Culvin joined to make the events team where we have organised sportsmans evenings for fellow union members and for the newly formed AFC Liverpool. Also benefit nights for fellow reds fans, which have been very successful. I also have vast knowledge of traveling and would be of great help for fellow union members.
I would like to be voted on the committee of the Liverpool Supporters Union.

Daniel Nicolson
I’m a 24 year old from Halewood. I am a Kop season ticket holder and go to most away games
domestically and abroad. I currently sit on the spirit of Shankly working committee as new media
officer. My role was to develop and manage the Liverpool Supporters’ Union website. The site is driven by a complex content management system, created by myself which allows anyone with access to update the site and manage the members database.
My intention if elected is to continue in this role. As a self employed web developer this is a natural
position for me.
For many years now I have been involved in fan led initiatives at Liverpool having always ‘gone the
match.’ I was involved in the setup of block 306 and founded a (current) Liverpool F.C./City Fanzine.
My experience with the SOS at the moment, my previous dealings with similar groups and a personal
feeling that I am ‘in touch’ with many fellow match-going supporters, particularly those of a similar
age and background, makes me believe that I am in a good position to continue my role on the
committee and use my knowledge and experience to help the union grow.

Paul Rice
A Liverpool fan for over 40 years, I’ve been involved in SOS since its inception, chairing that
momentous 1st meeting at the Sandon twelve months ago. I have since become Acting Chair and
have been involved with all our campaigns and have represented the union in various meetings with
the club and other organisations.
I am proud to have played a part in our pioneering efforts to practice what we preach by providing
low cost transport for fans, calling the club to account and not least in ramping up the campaign to
right the outrageous injustice of Michael Shields imprisonment. All of this has shown what the power
of coming together with one strong voice can do.
Going forward I remain dedicated to removing the current owners who clearly have neither the wit
nor the resources to take the club forward and to ensure whoever runs the club listens to and acts
upon the views and aspirations of its lifeblood, the supporters. I have considerable experience over
more years than I care to remember in both the public & private sectors, as well as in senior
management and as a trade union representative that I believe can benefit SOS.

Christopher Richard Smith
* pre-meningitis retirement= I have 20years+ as freelance business manager on 3 continents
networking/jvs & therefore have sufficient know-how of global affairs necessary to represent ALL
members regardless of creed colour or birthplace.
* Shanks / 40 years of being a REAL supporter, through good & bad - a history big games & small
venues, finals or friendlies, Beatles and RED power
* grass roots supporter & promoter of Liverpool way all over europe, inc a J Peel type Radio
programme in Freiburg & coaching kids the “Liverpool way”
* Belief in the goals of a socialist - entreneurial mix managment that respects & ENPOWERS each
supporter and yet can deal with the “commercial mentality” of modern world, having been a founder
member of 2 UNION S myself I understand the “mechanics”. of such a society.
* Own creativity & initiatives - kids “LP way” and supporting HJC, sponsored events /t-shirts despie
meague budget & TIME available to give to this ideal

Graham Smith
I am a match going red of forty years and a current season ticket holder. I am a qualified solicitor and run one of the largest law firms on Merseyside. I have vast experience of working for, and within, businesses and groups and can bring my organisational and managerial abilities to the union to improve upon the great start that has been made.
I am conscious that the union needs to communicate with all members, everywhere, and the special
challenge we have to include all union members from far and wide in knowing what is going on and
with decision making. I believe if we get this right then we will see a huge increase in membership
which can only increase the strength we will have to influence the club to recognise that it is we, the
fans, who are the real “shareholders” within LFC.
My legal background can assist in many areas and I am able to offer a significant amount of my time
and commitment to the union’s affairs and I have an infrastructure behind me that can make a real
difference to the union’s organisation and communication with members.

Francis Stanton
I have performed the role of Local Liaison/Community Development Officer and more recently Vice
Chair. Also been involved with many other things to do with The Union in the past year, including
the very successful ‘End of Season’ Bash and I’m involved with Travel arrangements. Also as an active member, I have helped organise and take part in the Direct Action.
Being part of the steering group for the last year has lead to me having a great sense of pride in the
achievements of the Union and I would like to continue to be part of the committee and help the
Union grow. I am approachable and regularly discuss Union matters and enquiries with people at the
match or over the internet, and I also have strong beliefs that members with no internet access are
also vitally important.
I would like to be voted onto the committee by the members, as I believe I am level headed and
weigh up both sides of an argument; I also remain calm when discussions become heated. The Union has a big year ahead and I would like to do my part.

Peter Sumpton
I am a BA (Hons) Marketing graduate (2003) currently working to achieve my professional marketing
qualification (CIM). I have had many varied marketing roles, covering every aspect from market
research to data consolidation leading me to my current position as a Marketing Communications
Manager. I have recently undertaken some key projects that would contribute to the position on
offer including:
• Rebranding
• Web design/coding (including SEO)
• Major exhibition project management
• Advertising strategy and budgeting
• Documentation control
I have become competent in various software packages throughout my employment including:
• Microsoft suite
• Illustrator
• Photoshop
• InDesign
• Dreamweaver
I follow my club home and abroad, valuing our clubs history and beliefs, but these values are under
threat due to recent boardroom activities. As we all know L.F.C is way behind in terms of marketing,
as the merchandising, ticket sales and treatment of supporters show. Service is a key marketing
feature of any business/football club in today’s society. Unfortunately Liverpool FC is sadly
incompetent in this area and I believe that as supporters it is down to us to bring about the change
that is quite clearly needed.
I look forward to hearing your response in the near future.

James Ward
Currently the youth officer I would like to resume this role.
Well known local fan.

I received the papers yesterday.

I asked for advice for Leon and he said to me that I don't have to vote. It makes sense because after all I don't know the candidates, so the abstention is something reasonable.

However, if you lot think that one of these guys is better than other and it is important he wins, I'll vote that guy.

What are you going to do on this one mates? by default, I planned to make a blank vote to support anyone who wins.

Leon's right sabre ,you don't have to vote . I would rather you did personally as i think a void vote is just one thrown away . Out of the candidates there are a couple who mention our overseas support and are looking to include them in the process as miuch as possible , maybe one of them would appeal . Either way sabes ,have a look at there manifesto's and vote . It's the first time for all of us and i'd say alot of fans don't know these people and are voting on what there manifesto's say anyway . Do use your vote though mate ?

Cheers Igor. I joined SOS because I wanted to support a bunch of supporters that IMHO are good for the club values. It was never a priority, and it is not a priority to have a voice or vote there, I want to support these guys because they do good for Liverpool.

I've read the manifesto, and well, can't help it mate, I don't believe any good things that anybody says about himself before an election, not that I don't believe, I'm just skeptical: I'd rather ask the few supporters I know through newkit who they know that will take care of traditional values of the club rather than any manifesto of a guy saying he's good at some software (so what).

A candidate  taking care of overseas fans wouldn't be for me a priority neither. The overseas fans are the ones who have to approach to the club and get their values, if they do, they'll be considered one fan more.

So I want to support the guys that you know they'll take care of what Liverpool has been always. If that guy has a manifest as short as this

James Ward

And has your trust, then he'll receive my vote :D

Would you agree the names that Ciggy has mentioned? If so, that's two newkit members I respect that support those lads, and that's more than any manifesto or promises to say "Hola amigo" to overseas fan.
So I'll vote the what the newkit SOS-ers, say.

P.S. Of course if members of newkit preffer to keep their privacy about their vote, they can PM or simply keep that privacy.
