New striker? - Please can we discuss it in here

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Our problem is we rely on Torres and we are hoping he will be injury free for the rest of the season, which might require prioritisation if we are still competing for the 3 trophies in April. I do not agree that we have a major problem after selling Keane, he was not an adequate replacement for Torres and with the chances he was given, he was not able to play with Torres either. Selling Keane does give us an opportunity to play Babel in his favoured position, or to try an untested youngster in a cautious formation for the last 15 min against outside top 6 clubs.

Don't be fooled by the fact he was free, he may yet prove to be priceless :;): .

Robbie Keane - 28 games, 7 goals. 1 in 4.

Andrei Voronin - 19 games, 5 goals. 1 in 3.8.

Erm, Voronin 6 in 28 according to my records. (double checked against a usually reliable source) In fact :

Keane - 7 goals in 1801 mins (257 mins/goal)
Voronin - 6 goals in 1586 mins (264 mins/goal)

One cost £20.3m and was sold, the other was free and was shipped out on loan. Little difference in scoring records, £20.3m difference in cost.

Voronin has never been much more than a 1 in 3 striker (1 goal every 3 games) during his career, but it's not as if we've lots of better options throughout the team or reserves

2008/09 Goalscoring

Gerrard - 15 goals in 32 appearances (about 1 in 2)
Torres - 8 goals in 23 appearances (about 1 in 3)
Keane - 7 goals in 28 appearances (1 in 4) - GONE
Kuyt - 7 goals in 33 appearances (about 1 in 5)
Alonso - 3 goals in 32 appearances (about 1 in 11)
Benayoun - 2 goals in 27 appearances (1 in 13.5)

I haven't a ready to hand record for Babel as he's often just used on the wing, never added Riera either

Babel - 2 goals in 28 appearances (1 in 14)
Riera - 4 goals in 29 appearances (about 1 in 7)

So Voronin would be in our top five goalscorers if he maintained anything like his current Liverpool record or managed 1 in 3. And much maligned as Kuyt is, only our two £20m+ strikers (one who was so good we've sold him) and Gerrard are scoring more often than him, he's joint third top scorer and that from mostly on the right hand side of midfield. He's in a rough patch, all players go through one - except maybe Gerrard

Surely its a sign we're in deep trouble when we're hoping Voronin will return from his loan spell.  Being realistic, I reckon this will be the easiest title Manu Utd will have ever won.

We did have but we spunked it in the Summer. Now let me guess, if someone says "yes we have" (got 40 million quid), then the counter will be "but he wouldn't come to us", followed by "so who do you want to sign" :D .

Well Aguero was already reported last year to say he didnt enjoy player with torres as he felt he was in his shadow all the time  :;):

Yeah we did have 40 mil but we needed more than just a striker thou surely ?

All we actually needed or so it seems was a left midfielder.

well if we kept crouch (well if he wanted to stay then yeah agree ) but i felt and still feel now that we need a creative player - soneone who can find little gaps to exploit , wether that be left right or centre it doesnt matter but someone to fill that gap between xabi, gerrard and torres .

its why i wanted silv mate - thought he could fill lots of gaps - left right centre second striker pace creativitoty. i wantd to spend the 20 odd mil on him and then the rest of a decent left back or back up striker .

My only real question about Silva is does he score enough (not really seen him play much TBH.) My own choice at the moment would be Diego ....... he does score regularly, but there are quite a few who could play that role for us, all depends on the price and how much money we have I suppose. Silva is much more versatile though which would be a big point in his favour.

What we really need is a right sided attcaking player (not necessarily an out & out winger)

Ibrahim Afalley
Karim Benzema

could both do a job there & theyd be my top 2 targets next season
