Yes Gerrard did stand out - the minute GH saw him he moved him straight up to the first team - the same with Carra - he stood out . And yes Eddie i would rather play established internationals in important games than untried youngsters .

Missed loads of this as ave been on me lunch in work.

Its not just in important games that these established yet massive flop internationals get picked or take up every position on the bench, its all games.
I was hoping that when the subs limit changed to 7 we would see more youngsters on the bench that might get on sometimes in games where we are cruising.
The only time we have seen that was PSV away when we had already qualified.
Now nobody is saying throw the kids in - GYBS you are twisting that to suit your point, what we are saying is would it be so bad to put Darby on the bench instead of a squad player that we know has had chance after chance and consistently let themselves down ?

Massive Flops ? Like who ? Which squad player coonstantly lets us down ? Yes we could put them on the bench but would they come on ? When have we had the chance bar that game against PSV to put these youngsters on the bench then bring them on when the game is over and done with ? Arent all our game massive important games in the prem ?

Lets look at our bench this season, Babel, Agger, Dossena (when Insua was playing), Ngog, Darby, Cavallieri Benayoun, Elzhar and Hyypia. Which of these can we afford to replace with less experience with the knowledge that we need to win the premiership or be competing on the last day.

Naming two Lucas and Dossena, and if you disagree with that then i am definately wasting my time.

Which brings us back to why bother having an Academy and buying expensive reserves when you could just sign an international player when you need one. No point having loads of reserve players who will NEVER get a chance.

Yeah dossena has had a poor time of it so far but in the last game actually showed a lot of improvement and the guy has only been here a short time so its hard to call him a flop just yet . Also Lucas in the last couple of games has actually been playing decent stuff - was very good against newcastle and even thou against wigan he conceded the penalty was having a fairly good game also he is still young as well and has time to develop .

GYBS they will both never cut it, Lucas is in the second half of his second season and has got worse not better.
He offers nothing going forwards and gives away so many freekicks.
Dossena had a better game last game, but is still nowhere near good enough and i am certain that we wouldnt miss either of them if they disappeared out of the squad tonight.

Life as a footballer . We cant afford to be constantly beiing international stars all the time so we have to get these youngsters in and see what happens . And most of the time Rafa seems to make a bit of money on players sold on .

Well as dossena hasnt even reached double figures in games for us im pretty willing to see what happens with him - same with Lucas - the guy still got time to develop . Things like giving away loads of free kicks will just be coached out of him and he has offered a fair bit going forward over the last couple of games .Of course its all opinions but not going to dump players into the flop bin just yet , especially not someone who is 21 and someone who has only been here a couple of months .

The last youngster who left who was supposed to be better than we have got as back up was Guthrie and looked what happened when he came up against our back up ?

But you say the good reserve players stand out like diamonds, so why not just buy the diamonds, if they are so easy to spot. Why bother buying the ones that don't stand out.

Because the players they buy are ones that stand out in their respective country or club or youth league etc . You got to see if they will stand up when they come accross here as well . See how they do when they go out on loan or when playing against the first teamers in training or against other reserve teams . And diamonds do get seen but then you have players like walcott and ramsey and bale and fabregas and anderson etc etc who did stand out but then cost millions and millions . Look at the two kids taggert just bought - 16 mil quids worth . The max rafa has prob spent on a kid is around a couple of mil - so has bought a fair number of them to see if they work out .

Where is the fair bit he offers going forward coming from ?
He to my knowledge has played one key pass all season, the ball for Gerrards second at Newcastle.
When he has got in good areas he has been wasteful and lacks the composure of a good attacking player.
He played a one two against Wigan to make room for a shot just outside the area and dragged it horribly wide, no technique in the shot at all.
He has at times got himself into useful headed positions but has again let himself down with his finishing.
He may be only 21 but he is in his second season here now and gets alot of playing time.

Dossena looks poor defensively, not great going forward and is small also so that puts us in danger of the diagonal ball over the top, added to that his pace isnt great and he dives in at times, all in all he looks nowhere near the required standard.
Yes he hasnt had much time but this is supposedly a top italian international and not a kid plucked from nowhere.

I would seriously rather Spearing for Lucas and the RIGHT footed Darby on the bench for Dossena.

And to say you can coach out of Lucas the giving away stupid freekicks or fouls ?
Well he is in hos second season now and still doin it so we must have terrible coaches.
