A man down is a man down, Arsenal were there to beaten on their patch and a valuable three points were at stake, that should be enough of an incentive to up the ante and go for Arsenal's throat. It's what Chelsea or Manchester United would have done and as you can see from their recent success that it pays dividends.
I don't know what has gone on behind the curtains at Anfield, but I am having a guess that Benitez gets his own way on an awful lot of transfers. Sure, he has missed some targets, but I'm sure there were better wingers in the world than Simao at the time and if I recall wasn't it Rafa who refused to meet Benfica's asking price of thirteen million for Simao and as for Alves was there any concrete evidence that Benitez wanted to sign him? Again I am sure there are better wingback's around than Alves.
As for the surprising turn of results against top four opposition, dont get me wrong I am delighted with them, but Man Utd, Chelsea and Arsenal have all been disappointing this season. United started out of the blocks slowly, but have picked up, Chelsea are just in complete disarray and Arsenal are just delusional beyond belief. And despite our impressive record against our contemporaries, draws against West Ham, Fulham, Stoke, Wigan to name a few refuse to allow me to revel in sheer jubilation.
