Well what an event and moment - monumental it is indeed. When a guy wouldn't have get a cuppa in a 'caf' in parts of america 40 years ago .. is now it's Commander in Chief wow...

I hope that the weight of history does not burden him too much and that he delivers an improved foreign policy, that brings peace to places close to metalhead, that the economic and environmental issues are tackled and set on a firm footing... I hope he's not assasinated.

Go President Obama :)

Well it was definitely worth watching and I'm glad I took time out of my day to do so.  I can understand the cynics who are sick of all the hype but I just don't share the sentiment.  IMHO, Obama is exactly what America and, by extension (like it or not), the world needs right now.  That said, he's got a monumental task ahead of him and wish he all the luck in the world...he'll need it.

I don't care that he is black (the people talking about how historic it is, tend to ignore that he has NO african american anscestors i.e. he is NOT descended from slavery in any way)

I just want him to fix the economy.

I doubt he will make much difference in the middle east as the Jewish lobby in America is so strong that America will always side with Israel.

I think he will be more environmentally aware than Bush was though.

My point was that they keep going on about slavery and showing some 90 year old whose parent was a slave, and saying this is some type of closure.

I'm glad that fool Bush is gone though, The whole world needs Obama to do a good job on the financial chaos.

i'm probably treading on very thin ice here but i imagine you would have to be at least black, or preferable black and american to really understand, or to really empathise with, the significance of this. its astonishing that the biggest, most powerful nation on the planet can go from segregation to a black president in about 40 or 50 years. i just hope that they can use the example to try and find resolutions to other conflicts around the world, rather than starting them as bush was all too keen on.

any one who hated or mistrusted bush and his policies, and that'll be most people, should be taking an interest in this. we've yet to see if he can live up to his promises but at the very least obama offers a chance for some positive changes.

I just doubt any american president, purple, white or black, have much margin to operate between all the interests surrounding them. The Israelies and their money, you can't píss them off because they buy you F16 and those buys are important for the local economy. The other lobbies, the guys who gave him money for the campaign.

Even if Barack Obama is what he seems, a good man with great oratory skills, I doubt he'll be able to operate freely. And if he does, he'll be killed in Dallas or something.

Exactly.

The president has to follow the political machine. The Jewish lobby is so strong financially and in the media that it would be political suicide to take them on.

Some Christian nutters over there (there are a lot) believe that Israel must be Jewish so that Jesus can come back and save us all - how those people are allowed to influence politics is scary.

If they'd be *Christian* nutters they'd be giving away their money, helping the helpless, healing the ill, forgiving the enemy. That's what I'd call a Christian nutter.

No, they're nuts about money, contracts, and power. And they use religion as a pretext.

I think it would be a much different story if Obama had been the son of two people whose great grandparents were slaves and had grown up in a poor urban environment and got out of the ghetto went to community college; that in my opinion would be a lot more inspiring to people. That would make the phrase "anyone can become president" ring more true

Instead he was mostly raised by his white grandfather who: Through a common ancestor, Mareen Duvall (a wealthy Huguenot merchant who emigrated to Maryland in the 1650s), Stanley Dunham was related to President Harry S. Truman (an eighth cousin twice removed), Vice-President Dick Cheney (an eighth cousin once removed), the British banker Anthony Gustav de Rothschild and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill.

And since His father was a Kenyan, and at the time of his birth, Kenya was a British Protectorate, Barack was born a dual citizen, making him a British Citizen related to Churchill  :D   and also technically not eligible to be president.

He went to private high school and Columbia and Harvard Law, and in grade school, went by the name "Barry"
