Given that keane is currently rubbish.. - Do we need a new striker?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

I asked it in the Keane thread, and nobody answered. Now based on his performance against Everton, he is no use to us whatsoever. I don't think I've ever seen a more inept performance from a player of his ability, and it's got me worried.

Now in terms of this thread, lets leave aside any thoughts about whose fault it is that Keane is currently rubbish. Equally, lets not bother debating that he is currently rubbish, because if you watched him against Everton you know that he is. If you didn't see it, take my word for it.

The reason I ask the question, is what do we do if Torres breaks down again? Hamstring injuries have an annoying habit of recurrence, and if he did pull up again, what do we do?

Our options it seems to me are Keane obviously, Egg Nog, Kuyt moving in from right midfield or Babel (schtop). Now I don't know about you, but looking at that list, based on current the form of his replacements I would go as far as saying if Torres gets injured again, our title challenge ends at that point.

Should we go out and get someone? I'm not necessarily asking for names here, but we've got about 10 more days where we are allowed to get someone. If Torres was to break down on the 1st of February, would we be confident with the other options, or possibilities?

Yes we need new striker but for what if the striker that we buy for almost 20m most of the time on the bench...

He need to play every match , not like one match he score 2 , the next match he's on the bench ...

I blame Rafa for Keanes performance last night, the lad scores goals and is dropped yet Forrest Gump doesnt score and plays every game.

We have two match winners in our team Torres & gerrard its not good enough.

So is it therefore ALL down to Rafa that Torres and Gerrard are so good - after all he plays htem wll the time when htey are fit.

These players need to feel the love dont they.

But Lynds I reckon (infact I know) that whatever has gone before, whoevers fault it is, whether or not he's a good signing or worth the money, all that stuff, we are in with the best chance we have been for years of winning the Premiership.

It looks a bit bleak right now, but even if we took somebody on loan or on a Bosman fromabroad, or even if we shelled out a few quid it would give us some type of cover. Having seen him against Everton, I think Keane is finished as a Liverpool player for this season at least.

At the very best, like Babel he may if you played him every week from here on in find something after a bit, get something going. The trouble is though we haven't got half a dozen matches to wait until he rebuilds his shattered confidence, nor can we be taking a punt on whether Babel can do it or not. Egg Nog is at the very best one for the future I think, while we all know that Dirk (bless him) isn't going to do it up top.

You couldn't even sensibly rotate Torres with any of them based on the Everton performance. I just wonder whether it would make sense to bring in a Hernan Crespo, a Raul or somebody like that. Somebody you could pick up on loan (and both of those might be totally unavailable, feck knows) but who could do a job. Ferguson did it was it last season with Henryk Larsson.

I am pretty sure though that Keane at the moment isn't an option.

Pains me to say it, but as soon as Rafa dished out his rant towards Fergie on the back of a great win over Newcastle (who?) I felt that the season would then go tits up.

I think we'd agree that football is 95% about confidence for the players? I don't know whether Rafa gives the players the confidence they need. Keane is a perfect example of someone who was a good enough player before he came to us. Good enough for Rafa to pay 20 mill for him. Yet look at him now. Total lack of confidence and consistancy. But how can you be consistant when you are scoring one week, brought on as sub the next, or not brought on at all! Keane knows as well as the crowd that his number will be the first to be shown when a sub is ready to come on. Does this fill him full of confidence? Or simply put him under more pressure which then affects his game and makes him less like the player Rafa bought in the first place?
I think the answer is there for everyone to see...

Torres and Gerrard are world class players and would be the same in any team no matter who their manager was.

Agreed he would be better off going back to Spurs, I have the answer to our problem Michael Owen available for 4 million and would gobble up all the chances we fail to put away.

Maybe that's what we should do. Buy a striker for 20 million every august. Not play him consistantly and sell him in january for less than we bought him. Bring somone else in on loan until may and repeat the process year after year?
Rafa has to make the most of what he's got. If he can't then serious questions have to asked about his ability to lead this club back to the top.

So then surely KEane would be a good player no matter who his manager was ?

You cant have it both ways - if its Rafa's fault we do one thing, its got to be him who is responsible for our success in another area.

Fickle.

Pedantic - but its not possible to be picked and dropped in every game.

Also - KEane looks like a broken man ? Get a grip girl. He looks like a football player wwho has had his dream move, is over paid, and doesnt try his hardest to get his job done, hiding behind hte "manager hates me" card.

I manage people, and what Ido affects them, but if they are not willing, no matter ho much I try and encourage them its NEVER going to happen. This is a FACT.

Missing chances is down to a lack of concentration, NOT being subbed a few weeks ago.

KEane has had chances, recently and noteably against PReston and Everton - on from the start. Each time he looked like a Championship striker.
