IMPORTANT BIT

Gerrard asked for a particular tune but was told that it was not club policy to play requests. At that point the footballer allegedly pushed past Mr McGee, catching him with an elbow.

A police source said: 'Mr McGee retaliated and swore at Gerrard, which was when Gerrard's mates turned violent and assaulted him.'

Friends of the England star insisted he had been reacting to provocation and had thrown no punches himself. Mr McGee was taken to hospital where he received four stitches to his forehead and treatment on a cut nose, swollen eye and a dislodged tooth.

Are you lot all being serious here?

5 weeks inside for section 20?  FFS

Section 20's are dished out loads up here and about 99.9% of them end up with a fine and a slap on the wrist ,

That's f.ucking ridiclous, he didn't even throw a punch and he's getting 5 years according to some?  :D

F*ck what they think. Sure their messiah attacked a fella on live TV in the stands FFS, in front of kids and such. F*ck em!

I know it's easy to say Steve shouldn't have done what he done because of who he is and he's a role model and all, but lets be honest, if someone is acting a c*nt to your face and you've a few jars in you, you're gonna nut the b@stard. Just because he's a footballer, and a well known one, it doesn't mean he's a soft touch and should be treated as one. The fella deserves respect like anyone else. Fair play to ye, Steve. Didn't hit the c*nt hard enough I say.

how diff is this to a player throwing an elbow on the pitch and causing the same injuries?

I know he's only been charged and not convicted, however it is dissapointing as he is a MASSIVE role model for kids and adults alike.

Sure what's new there. The c*nts are always heckling him anyway. Water off a duck's back, especially when he smashes one into the back of the net.

Good piece by Ollie Holt

Steven Gerrard arrest: Brawl claim is like poison to model pro
Oliver Holt 30/12/2008

It is hard to think of anyone less likely than Steven Gerrard to be facing allegations of assault in a late-night bar.

The Liverpool captain has matured into the epitome of the conscientious, committed, responsible kind of professional footballer.

He is the opposite of the spoilt, out-of-control, boorish minority of players who have given modern footballers a bad name.

Everything about him exudes honesty and courtesy and, of course, a fierce will to win.

And most of all, he has always felt a keen sense of duty to uphold the image of Liverpool FC, the great Merseyside institution he represents.

Involvement in this kind of incident, however marginal his role may turn out to be, will be like poison to him. He will be torturing himself for even being near a brawl in a Southport bar.

Gerrard shies from publicity and does not relish the limelight off the pitch.

He will also know this is just about the worst time for his focus on his game to be disrupted. His team are three points clear in the Premier League and fresh from a 5-1 thrashing of Newcastle on Sunday.

They were beginning to look as though they might be building the kind of momentum that could hold off the title favourites, Chelsea and Manchester Utd. And there is real optimism that the club side can win its first top flight title for 19 years.

And yet now Gerrard, who has a vulnerable side and often needs reassurance, has found himself caught up in nightclub mess.

He is Liverpool's most important player and the club's management and supporters will be hoping the furore quickly abates.

The consolation for them and for Gerrard is that recent years have shown it has become fashionable to accuse footballers of wrong-doing, often without any evidence to back it up. Modern players have become trophy victims for those seeking publicity.

Time and again, players have been subjected to lurid allegations only for charges to be dropped

Liverpool fans will be hoping their instincts about Gerrard are right and that he will soon be free to get on with his life.

As some of my mates are policemen I must be careful of what I say ( most of them do a good job) but Radio 5 live has just made a few good points.

20 police officers in the space of 1 hours turned up at the bar.

police forensics officers were at the club within 1 hour

scenes of crime (not the same as forensics officers) only used for deaths were also at the bar within 1 hour.

Someone held for 15 hours on a ABH charge is very strange

The person that has been hurt has let there family talk to the press before any charges have been made (this is forbidden in any assault charge as it my change the view of the CPS as they may make their choice on what is said and not what happened).

If CCTV has been seen and it is true that SG only pushed passed the person and caught him as he done so SG should have been let go as soon as the CCTV had been viewed and asked to report back the next day (not as if they don’t know where to find him)

Spot on Nan, this fecker must've seen pound signs. Check the knuckles on his mates, they probably gave him a few digs while they were waiting for the Police to arrive.
