Steve mcmanaman..

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

I saw a clip of Macca talking on Setanta last night and my mate and I started talking about just what a great player he was in his time for us. He was one of those players who genuinely got you on the edge of your seat and like Barnsey, was an absolutely superb dribbler of the ball, one of the best I've ever seen.

If only his finishing matched a lot of his approach play I think he'd have been regarded as the best in the world at the time. Infact just think how much a Mcmanaman in his prime would improve our team at the moment, especially as we haven't had a really top class right sided player for years now.

This compilation is class and reminds you of what a great player he was.

That Celtic goal was just sublime, especially the first touch. How much do you reckon he'd be worth in today's market?

Yes frustrating to begin with, as he was weak and scrawney. But with age he improved greatly.

I loved the guy although he annoyed me a lot at times and I was at Goodison when Brucey punched him and to be honest I was on Bruceys side.

But great player, a great character and a great song which was not sung enough to be honest

"And Bruce Grobelar is going absolutely wild with Steve MacManaman..."

Wasn't that for an awful attempt at a clearance or something? I just have vague memories of him and Steve slapping each other like a pair of women.

It was a shocking clearance that led to Mark Ward putting Everton 1-0 up. Later in that game, Kvarme (remember him?) got turned inside out by Cadamarteri (remember him?) for the second and we lost 2-0.

He was still a brilliant player though, and despite his deficiencies, we'd have been f#cked without him in the 90's.

why does no one have the same axe to grind for Macca as they do for Owen? He let his contract wind down and walked off into a monster contract at Madrid giving the club who brought him up absolutely nowt - just because he was a scouser or was there something that went on behind the scenes?

That compilation's rubbish. Theres far better ones that show his skill and ability to beat players. He was one of my favourate players of that time and the way he used to just pick the ball up and run with it nearly everytime he got it was immense.

Not only that but he always seemed to release the ball at the right time and had superb vision for 5 yard weighted through balls and one-two's.

Still, his best performances for Liverpool were in the free role and not when he was restricted to playing as a wide player. He done alot of excellent work in the centre of the pitch.

Am I missing something here ? Great player yes, but wasn't he another one who ran down his contract and fu'cked off on a free ?

Owen gets down the banks when we at least got something for his move, McMannaman stitched LFC up big time and gets nothing but fond memories.

On this Leon

Yeah, recent months have seen him backing us, wasn't always like that.

He let the club know that he wouldnt sign a new contract cause he wanted to pursue a career abroad so it was up to the club if they wanted to sell him or keep him and risk him going on a free

I'd agree with that.

Roy Evans definitely got the best out of him. Souness played him out on the right wing and it didn't really work - countless dribbles down the line followed by a pass back to Rob Jones to cross it in. Once he had the freedom of the pitch he was unstoppable.

Well I remember at the time how he was being touted as being worth 15 million. What mugs we were when we let him go on a bosman.

Evans was dictated to by the players and MacManaman walked out for free because HE wanted to knowing he´d get a bigger salary.
Evans was miserably weak....... :(
