If you could have one player from the past, - Who would it be and why?

For the simple fact that we're :censored: awful at left back at the moment I'd bring back Gerry Byrne, Alec Lyndsay, Joey Jones, Alan Kennedy or Steve Nicol. Take your pick which one - for me it'd be Joey because we lack a bit of bite at times and he certainly wouldn't be backing out of any tackles.

Out of themn Bill I'd go for Stevie Nicol. What a fecking player he was.

Could always stick him up front if we were stuck as well, didn't he get a hat-trick against Sheff Wed once?

Steve Nicol was top class Mick, can play anywhere across the back four as well. Absoloutely boss defender with real ability going forward too. That was one of the very few flaws Joey Jones had - going forward because he wasn't the best footballer in the world but he made up for ten times over with his defensive work.

Excellent player was Steve Nicol. His most memorable hattrick was against newcastle, the lob over the keeper for one of them  was perfection itself.

Fowler in his prime.

No-one, and I mean NO-ONE could stop him back then.

Yup. My favourite player was Ian Rush but for all the goals he never had the magic of Fowler.Remember when he megged Staunton and nonchalantly placed it in the top corner from 35 yards.UNBELIEVABLE

Is the most realistic and obvious choice given the thread title and Owen rumours. Not too much point reminiscing with no hope of putting a Barnes, Nicol or Rush on the pitch. But Owen is in good scoring form and (nearly) available, let's hope the barcodes bugger up negotiations. He'd be daft to agree a contract now instead of seeing what bosman contract offers come in during January. How will he know how his Newcastle offer compares? They might offer £75k a week, we might offer £90k a week and a tidy signing on fee. If Newcastle were trying to trim their wages bill then they're not going to be keen on offering what Owen must surely want to stay at a fairly ordinary club like Newcastle with no prospect of trophies, the Champions League or even Europe at the moment. The club's in a mess, the manager is far from permanent and he might be sold any time to raise funds (not by Kinnear, but how long will Kinnear be manager?)

If we're playing fantasy past player, then we need someone like Dalglish or Barnes. We do need a LB but goalscoring has been a problem since the season before Owen left, and in his last season I think he played 29 Premiership games and scored 16 goals (three other goals in nine non-Premiership games)

Goals/Game

95/96 1.84
96/97 1.63
97/98 1.79
98/99 1.79
99/00 1.34
00/01 1.87
01/02 1.76
02/03 1.61
03/04 1.45
04/05 1.37
05/06 1.50
06/07 1.50
07/08 1.76
08/09 1.53

Only twice below 1.6 goals per game in nine seasons before Rafa, only once above 1.6 goals per game under Rafa in his fifth season. In those same periods we have tightened up slightly defensively from 0.99 goals per game conceded to 0.78. Goals win games

Well, cant narrow it down.. But positionally:

GK - Clem

CB - Hansen

Full Back - Nicol

CM - Whelan

Winger - Barnes

ST - Kenny

All of those back in our side and there would be no point in the opposition turning up!
