If you could have one player from the past, - Who would it be and why?

The thread about Gerrard got me thinking, and I think it's a thread that's been done before but anyway. As it says, in todays team who would you have and why?

For me it'd be Peter Beardsley. I think if we had him in the team with a fit Torres, we'd win the Premiership at a canter. What a wonderful little player he was at his best. I think he'd fit better with Torres than Dalglish would TBH.

Failing that I'd sell off Masherano and Alonso and have Sounness in midfield with Gerrard. S@ints right, that would be an unbelieveable pairing. Barnes down the left wouldn't go amiss either, or even a swap of God at his best for Keane.

Only one player for me and that would be kenny by a mile - best player ever in a red shirt and would be outstanding with gerrard and torres. Totally see why you pick beardo but kenny for me was the same sort of player just a lot lot lot better .

i was thinking the same. what a team that would make. maybe in our dreams. Peter Beardsley Would have added another dimension to our team. He wasntknown for his goals that much. He played in 175 matches and scored 59 goals, but it was his vision, guile and all action style of play that endeared him to the Anfield faithful. Would have been excellant for torres. I would still prefer alonso over souness though but thats just my view. Excluding keane out would love rushie.

Spot on Mick. Beardsley would be an ideal foil for Torres in the current squad. Of course if we were looking to build a squad from scratch with only Gerrard and Carra, then it would be Dalglish.... hands down, no contest.

Either Dalglish or Beardsley would be perfect in my opinion. Both players who make things happen, great vision and skill and would both work perfectly with Torres. Stick Barnes in there as well and we might not even need a defence!

If I had to pick one it would be Dalglish, I think he handled the physical side of the game better, and scored a few more goals than Beardsley, but Barnes in his first couple of years was virtually impossible to stop.

One player you said   Although I agree with you

For me Kenny.  His passing would give Torres the service Rush had. Kennys service with a world class striker and you know the result just check out the videos from the 80's.  And with Kenny in the hole I reckon Gerrard would be happy to play on the right with a tutu if needed :D

The mean side of me would love to see Tommy Smith face Ronaldo with a sixties referee just for one game to teach the ***** a lesson

Kenny playing in front of SG and linking with Torres would be a dream.

Souness for his vision, passing ability and presence.

Kenny or barnes , for there quality and vision ,which we are really lacking in the final third at the moment . Torres up front with Kenny just behind and barnes on the left . With gerrard and alonso controlling the midfield . Feck me we'd tw@t the mancs and cheslea and play arsenal off the park .

Emlyn Hughes.

I have a great admiration for Kuyt and his work rate so needless to say Emlyn would fit in perfectly today. Played anywhere in defence and was good at it and also filled in at midfield. Top class player.

Taken from LFC.TV

Full back, centre back and midfielder he was one of the great Liverpool captains and the first to hold aloft the European Cup after the majestic 3-1 victory over Borrussia Moenchengladbach in Rome in 1977.

Hughes, who also captained England and won 62 caps, was signed as a 19-year-old by Bill Shankly from Blackpool for £65,000 in 1967 after a mere 31 League and Cup appearances. But his infectious enthusiasm, skill and endless drive combined to make him a player of impressive stature and also prompted Everton fans to give him the enduring nickname 'Crazy Horse'.

Barrow-born Hughes was an inspirational figure for club and country and crowned his energetic displays with some spectacular goals, including two in the Mersey derby win at Everton in March 1973.

Hughes, an OBE, came from a sporting family; his father was former Barrow and Britain Rugby League star Fred, both his brother and uncle were R L professionals and one of his aunts was an England hockey international. His Anfield career ended when he joined Wolves for £90,000 in 1979.

In todays game, wouldnt be a bad addition at all.
