ok i know hes great at taking the ball forward... and its always great to have a centerback who can actually go forward and make something happen... but surely first and foremost ud be looking at his defending and whether he can consistently be solid in a defensive partnership...
from what iv seen of the lad he has many great attributes but hes also lacking in many others.. his positioning and aerial dominance and concentration arent the best around and having him in a 2 man central defensive pairing is always likely to cause u problems...
i think the comparison with ferdinand is a little way off ... ferdinand is a great defender... he can also play, but his main strengths lie in his defensive attributes... unfortunately its not the same for agger...

on paper playing him as part of a 3man back line sounds like a good idea... but to be perfectly clear on one thing.. i dont think that any top club should ever play a 3 man backline unless they have the right personnel to do so and im not talking about centerebacks only ... the only club that i can remember making it work in recent times was Roma but they had what it took and probably had the best wingbacks and midfielders to make it work at the time... cant see any other top club doing it atm..definately not liverpool with the players we have... national teams maybe but top clubs... dont think so..

Best solution i could think of was playing him as a leftback where his strengths can be frequently used for the benefit of the team while his failing wouldnt leave us as exposed.

He had one bad game in the 06/07 season during the semi final against drogba when drogba tore him to shreds for there goal - other than that the guy was class throughout that season and his defending is spot on - remember when denmark played england 3 years ago and agger had rooney in his pocket the whole game.

What also encouraged me was that after Drogba gave him such a torrid time, it was really evident in the return leg that he had learned from it - if you remember, Drogba spent the second leg pretty much in Agger's pocket, and you could tell that he'd changed the way he played him significantly from the first leg.

Also, it's just dawned on me, Agger got blamed in part for Cole's goal in the first leg when he got too close and wrong side as Drogba turned him in the box - then he came back and scored the goal against them in the second leg.

Seems he's pretty resilient in the face of a set-back too, after seeing him bring it forward following the first goal we conceded against Wigan.

yeah remember drogba resorted to diving around all over the place when he was getting nothing from agger - remember john aldridge words "get up theres nothing wrong with him ". the guy is our future cb with skittle . no doubt about that.

I doubt he has the engine to play midfield or left back for 90 minutes this season. Need to do a hell of a lot more running and I don't think his endurance is one of his strengths at this stage.

Milan confirm Agger interest

AC Milan have confirmed that they will make a move to sign Liverpool defender Daniel Agger in the January transfer window.

Rossoneri vice-president Adriano Galliani revealed on Wednesday that the 23-year-old Denmark international was on a list of "three or four" that the club want as replacements for ageing veterans Paolo Maldini and Alessandro Nesta.

"In January we will sign a defender, there's no doubt about it," Galliani told Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport. "We have a list of three or four players who could be useful in defence and Agger is one of them. In January we'll sign one of them."

Agger has been linked with a move to Milan after reports of a fall-out with manager Rafael Benitez, which has also resulted in contract talks between the club and the player reaching an impasse.

"We've followed Agger and his situation at Liverpool before now, we know about the problems between the player and the club over a new contract," Galliani added.

Milan are willing to pay about €8 million for Agger but Benitez has said that he does not want to let the defender leave Anfield.

The other two names on Milan's wish list are reported to be William Gallas, who has been stripped of the captaincy at Arsenal, and Palermo starlet Simon Kjaer.

I think he is a very promising defender... wouldn't want him to leave us at all... and milan is not like real, they get most of their signings right... this interest just means that agger is one of the brightest prospects when it comes to CB's

Hopefully he gets a new contract soon, and we can lay this rumour to bed. Really wouldn't want him to go anywhere.

Talks about a new deal have stalled and AC Milan have targeted Agger as a January transfer

Per Steffensen, Agger's agent, refused to comment about the player's new contract.

Steffensen would only say: 'He still has 18 months left on his Liverpool contract, that is a fact.

'It’s not only up to Daniel. He has said he is happy at Liverpool but there are always two parties.

'I don't know if he will stay,' Steffenson added.

Not quite sure what the latest is with the Agger thing but we need to keep hold of him. He had a good game yesterday and is starting to look like he's getting back to his best.

The argument about him being good enough for midfield isn't valid. He is good at the back and can pick a pass when he has time on his hands. As a CB or sweeper he gets that time. Put him in MF and it would be too congested for him IMO!!
