The rotation thread - All "R" talk in here please!

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby bigmick » Sat Nov 29, 2008 1:42 am

Collymore is wrong, Liverpool have a good chance of winning the league this season with Rafa as manager. We certainly could never have won it before with all the "styling" and the silliness, but now we've thrown all that nonsense in the bin of course we could win it yes.

Cue somebody coming on and either denying till they're blue in the face that there has been any change of policy, or maintaining till they're blue in the face that the lack of styling has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with us being top of the league.

DISCLAIMER-I AM NOT SAYING THE ONLY REASON WE ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE IS BECAUSE WE HAVE ROTATED LESS, I AM MERELY OF THE OPINION THAT IT IS A FAIRLY SIGNIFICANT FACTOR.

Thought I might as well comment on the "in game rotation  " which has been mentioned on another thread. I'm having a bet here and now that somebody in all seriousness makes the claim before too much longer that far from cutting down on rotation, Rafa actually still rotates just as much as he used to but he now does it "in game" through substitutions rather than through selecting different line-ups  :D.

The claim will be followed up with the "so you see our being top of the league with our best start in history is nothing to do with rotation or lack thereof" chestnut. "In game rotation", least i can go to bed with a smile on me face thinking of that one, classic

Ah Kazza, nice to see you still visit the thread form time to time. You've made some interesting points throughout the 67 pages, it'd be a shame to not stick with it now, particularly with the team joint top of the league  :;): .

I'm still waiting BTW for that "football" post, you know the one where you post up an opinion of your own about football. You might just surprise us all if you were to post up something about the game rather than having a pop at somebody else in each and every post. Don't let the fact that you were wrong on rotation put you off, we all get it wrong sometimes

My point was mick (in the Robbie keane thread) that the manager is not subbing keane beacuse he dislikes him or wants to p!ss the fans off or he's just guessing . He's doing it for a reason . What that reason is i wouldn't know , but everyone know's the way Rafa is buy now . He has reason's for everything he does. We don't have to agree with them , bit some of the excuses that people give for his substitutions are basically stupid.

I'm happy you have joined the "I go to bed with a smile" brigade, I've been doing that with some views the last 4 years! :D

Probably the best way we have to laugh about this issues is to pick the minutes played by every key player, compare them to the previous season and see whether the difference is big. And then yes, laugh freely.

But surely Bigmick, you can't think Igor or me wrote that to say that we were right all along or you were right. Myself, I wrote that because I think that not every time that a player has been subbed it's been due to a tactical reason or a bad performance reason.

No more, no less than that. Meaning, don't panic, nobody is denying the "he has seen the light" statement

Spot on, Sabre.  I don't think anyone was arguing that Rafa's use of substitutions is equivalent to his former rotation policy in terms of the degree of chopping and changing.  That is, he's not replaced Rafa-styling with an equivalent level of "in game rotation."  And, I'm sure you or Igor didn't bring up the point as a way to suggest that Rafa's been rotating in a new way all along.

No, I think what you've said--which is utterly reasonable--is that we know we have a manager that concerns himself with how many minutes his players play over the course of the season.  With that knowledge, and accepting the fact that he's rotating less from game to game, doesn't it simply stand to reason that he might opt to sub off particular players earlier in matches than their performances would otherwise warrant, in order to ensure that they're not run into the ground before Christmas?  Riera, as I said in the other thread, would be the obvious case.  It was made very clear when he arrived that he was not match fit by Liverpool standards and that he had trouble adjusting to the pace of the league.  Add that knowledge to the fact that he is our nailed on LM with very little competition and it's easy to see that he's going to be run ragged if he plays 90+ minutes virtually twice a week for several months on the bounce.  Under these circumstances, I wouldn't doubt for a minute that Rafa would look to sub him off early in many games to make sure he's not burnt out.  I can't see why that's a laughable suggestion?

Bob you miss my point. The suggestion that rather than rotate the team willy nilly, you instead win games first then take star players off is as old as the hills. Similarly, the idea that you qualify comfortably from the Champions League group and THEN rotate, or establish momentum in the league and THEN rotate is something I have been banging on about for the best part of four seasons. Wait until players are actually tired, and THEN rotate etc etc, it all makes perfect sense to me.

Posters such as yourself, Igor and Sabre have made perfect sense to me all along to be perfectly honest, and I've thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing. The debate has been light hearted, enlightening (even I am ever so slightly more pro-rotation than I was at the outset of the debate four seasons ago) and generally a good one.

There are others however who haven't conducted themselves as sensibly as that, no doubt on both sides. This why I predicted that somebody will claim that "in game rotation" is just the same as normal rotation and therefore there has been no "seeing of the light", and in fact any claim from anti-rotationers that they possibly may have had something of a valid point all along is utter hogwash. Someone will claim it before long, you mark my words.

It's the same reason you have to put disclaimers on posts, "I'm not saying we should play the same team in every single game", "I'm not saying that the only reason we are top of the league is becasue we are rotating less" etc etc etc. If you don't, then you get swarmed over by numpties who want to talk about what you do for a living, where you live, how often you've been to the match, your political persuasion, your choice of wife etc etc and it stops being fun anymore. They even quote your discalimers in an attempt to stir a reaction as you see on this page.

Posters such as yourself, Igor and Sabre are in an entirely different bracket to such contributors, and as such get a totally different reaction. It is completely beyond my human frailty though to avoid the temptation to laugh in the face of these "other" people. They were 100% wrong with a flashing light neon sign, dished out abuse of an unnecessary nature, and with every victory for the team, each passing week when we are in the title race they end up looking further and further into the abyss of total wrongness. When you see posts like the one on this page (four before your one), they deserve nothing more or less than a smile

They accused me of being happy when we lost. Claimed I wouldn't be seen or heard when we won, I "wasn't a true fan" despite the fact I've supported the club for 37 of my 42 years. And now, the funniest and best bit of all is, it is them who are never seen or heard. We are rotating nowhere near as much and are top of the league and they've disappeared  :D Absolutely poetic.

Still it's my own fault. If you post longer, they don't read them as they find it too "boring". Similarly, if you actually talk about football they don't comment, as they never talk about football on a football forum either (probably too boring as well). I must make a note for next time to avoid them stalking me.

DISCLAIMER-THE ABOVE COMMENTS DO NOT APPLY TO BOB, SABRE AND IGOR WHO OCCASIONALLY TALK SENSE  :;):

:D  Ahh, I see it now Mick--it was a pre-emptive strike rather than a reaction to what's already been posted.  Time for a new disclaimer then, mate.  Something along the lines of, "THE ABOVE COMMENTS DO NOT APPLY TO SABRE, IGOR AND BOB, WHO TALK SENSE."

Nah, bigmick just sent a pre-emptive strike (1), pretty much like when we rotated in the Carling Cup with a very weakened team and I PMed him saying "how do you do" and warning him not to put that game as example of how bad is rotation because it was a very weakened team.

He just warned Igor and me not to get carried away saying Rafa's been rotating all the time  :D

(1) after all only me and Igor mentioned the in-game rotation, but for starters, it's a bad name, it's just "minute saving", but since I used "in-game rotation" it triggered the warning :D

(2) No worries.
